If a product does exactly what you want it to do and a way you like why would you care if it was ever going to be updated? My main genealogy program is FTM 8.0. I've updated it twice and both times I decided I liked 8.0 better. But, for day to day use I much prefer to use PAF. I record all of my data in FTM, then use it for all of my reports I print out. Then I export a gedcom and import to PAF for day to day work. To think you would automatically update a program just because somebody decides to issue an upgrade seems pretty silly to me if your happy with what you're using. I have better things to do with my time than spending it trying to learn someones idea of a new and improved way of doing things when the old way works. Good Morning, No offense to PAF users, but why would anyone want to continue to use software that will never be updated? PAF served it's purpose and it is time to let it retire. The online function of the FS Tree is not -IMHO- acceptable either. Reasons? As of right now, there is no way to create a gedcom for backup and the whole system of servers that FS uses are subject to internal server errors. Who knows what havoc that causes to data? So, in the interest of finding and using modern genealogical software, let me just say that there are a lot of programs out there that are not only inexpensive, but exciting to use. Granted, there is a learning curve to everything we do webwise, but that is what keeps our minds functioning. Try Legacy Family Tree 8, there is a free version and the deluxe version is only $30.00. This is cheap compared to some of the other stuff out there. FTM is more expensive and of course is owned by Ancestry. Both Roots Magic and Legacy integrate with FS which is an interesting search tool when used properly. Here is a list of others: https://familysearch.org/products One last bit of information. The past couple of years has brought a proliferation of businesses that promote Genealogical research by offering online data entry and storage of that data. As with any purchase: Buyer Beware! Larry - I have it, but Gmail won't allow me to send .exe files (even if zipped). I uploaded a copy here, and then tried to download it and run it, works perfectly........ http://www.filedropper.com/paf5englishsetup (no registration required) I'm using Firefox with ad-blocking, so there is only one 'download' button on the page. The file name is paf5englishsetup.exe If you use Internet Explorer, make sure you click the download button directly beneath where the URL and EMBED code are in the middle of the page. Both make you enter a CAPTCHA code before the download starts. .........anyone else who may want to keep a copy, feel free to download. Don't know how long that website will retain the file, though, I'm sure they periodically delete them. ________________________________ Thanks for your help Bella. I did search Grave Creek and found both Moundsville and Elizabethtown as alternative names -that is why I was confused about place of birth. I will search the BMD's for West Virginia. I don't know why Joseph and his wife were living separately- I can only guess he never went home after the war. Somewhere I have a census for 1870 or 1880 that I think is him and he is married in Ohio..I must have misfiled it and I do not have a subscription to ancestry at this time. He is living with his sister-in-law in 1900 in Clearfield, PA but then must have moved to Indiana where he died in a home for disabled volunteer soldiers. I have all of his Civil War records as well as the death certificate from Indiana- but nothing gives parents names. The censuses show Noah was born in Ohio- but in one it says Pennsylvania. A simple google search for "Grave Creek WV" shows a bunch of hits for an area around Moundsville WV, where an archealogical prehistoric mound is found. 2. Birth records for 1824 are going to be hard to find, but luckily West Virginia has about the nicest collection going on the internet. Google West Virginia BMD's or Vital Records and pick the one which is for WV Archives, the most important looking link of the bunch. Not to say that there is one for Joseph, but that source is the best anywhere to look. 3. What is your best explanation why Joseph and his wife were living separately in those censuses you name? 4. Did you research the dates of Vital Record holdings for (Marion) Indiana? Did you send for a death cert for Joseph from there? If not done yet, do it. 5. What do the censuses show for the place of birth for Noah, Joseph's brother? Bella On 01/24/14, Dawn Butler<dawncts@yahoo.com> wrote: One of my brick walls is finding the parents of Joseph L. Leslie. I may have posted before but thought I would try again. According to Civil War records I believe Joseph was born in Grave Creek??, WV approximately 1824 which may have been called something else at the time of his birth. Joseph was married to Sabra Hartwell and married in Jamestown, NY. He lived in Athens, PA in 1850, Titusville, PA in 1860 and served in the 18th PA Cavalry Company D from 1862-1865. I have all of his Civil War Records. In the 1870 census his wife Sabra was living in Titusville and in 1880 she was living in Allegheny and marital status was reported as widowed. In 1900 Joseph (I think this is my Joseph) was living in Union, Clearfield, PA with his sister-in -law (If this is correct then his brother is Noah Leslie). Joseph died March 23, 1905 in Marion, Indiana and is buried in Marion National Cemetery. I believe his father was born in Scotland- this is consistent on most all of the census for Joseph and Noah. I have Sabra's death date and a good amount of information on Noah's family. Noah died in 1892 in Summerville, PA but I don't have a death record. I could use any suggestions to find out more about Joseph's parents but here are my questions: -I had found a census for 1870 or 1880 that had a Joseph Leslie that I thought was mine (could have been listed as JL Leslie or Jos Leslie or spelled Lesley) but I must have misplaced it and I currently don't have a subscription to ancestry-If I remember correctly in this census he was living in Ohio and I believe it had his birthplace as WV or VA and he was married again. can someone find this for me? -are there any birth records for Grave Creek WV? -his brother Noah was born in either Ohio or PA approximately 1822 but I have not been able to find any record of this. Suggestions? -In the book "The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln" I saw this and was wondering if anyone would know where a copy could be found if there actually is a copy: Oct. 19. To Ethan A. Hitchcock, on petition for exchange of Lieut. Thomas J. Crossley, 57th Pa. Vols., and Joseph L. Leslie, 18th Pa. Cav,"Respectfully submitted to Gen. Hitchcock A. Mary Fran, Thanks so much for the info. I will try to email her. Although I have quite a bit of information for my 3rd great grandparents in Pittsburgh, I still can't find where he came from in Germany. Maybe Amy has some ideas of where I can search next or if she's still working as a genealogist, I can hire her. There may be some records there in PA that I haven't thought about searching yet. In any case, thank you for the information. You've been very helpful! Carol in California
>From my New and Complete Gazetteer of the United States, 1854: "Grave Creek, a thriving postal village, capital of Marshall county Virginia....situated on the left bank of the Ohio 12 miles below Wheeling. It is divided into two distinct villages, of nearly equal size, namely Elizabethtown and Moundsville...The name of the post office is Grave Creek....." This could explain why there may be a question of the correct name of the place of birth. Bob Buckler

Hi Carol, Both the Oakland (main) Carnegie Library and the Heinz History Center have an obituary index covering post the Post-Gazette and Herald Tribune for large blocks of years although there are breaks. They will search these for you for Wahn/Whan for a modest fee. It might be worth a try for your search for her sibs if you haven't done so already. Don On Saturday, January 25, 2014 8:51 AM, Carol A. 1. LINCOLN " Thanks in advance for you help. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Visit our Allegheny County, PA Website: [1]http://www.pagenweb.org/~allegheny/index.htm ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [2]PAALLEGH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message References 1. http://www.pagenweb.org/ 2. mailto:PAALLEGH-request@rootsweb.com
