Larry, A good many people have already given you answer to this, all of them correct. Let me throw my two cents worth in just from what I observed from headstones and doing genealogy. Two basic ways names get changed the accidental and the deliberate. The accidental happens through differences in languages. Such as the resident saying to the census taker his name and the taker recording it in his phonic sense such as my ggreat Aunt's name being changed from Hite to Heid on censuses 1870 to 1900. Another whose name was spelled Hoi in French came up Hay and stuck in baptismal records. Those were accidental of course. The deliberate I see more in headstones. You can see the progression. The original immigrant is something like Guttenboi, which changes to Guttenboy in the second generation Gutboy, the third and Goodboy in last. Some people anglized their names to be more American such as Schmitt to Smith or Kronnenberger to Crownhill. I know a lot of people over the years with eastern European names shortened them to make it easier for Americans to spell such as Laitkaiteroski becomes Laitkait. Sometimes people would go back and change mistakes or take back their original spelling, but most people either didn't know or let it slide HELEN in Pgh. My I guess step-grandfather completely changed his surname when he came to America from Croatia because, possible rumor, he was wanted in Croatia for some crime.
Lillian Russell Moore died in 1922 -- if the house your son bought in Mt. Lebanon was built by then, it could have been her home. But her initials would have been LRM, not LMR, isn't that right? "Monograms" on silverware or linens often had the last initial in the center, but in that case, that initial was larger than the other two. Nitpicking? Probably, but that's the way it usually was. Hi group: Let me dispel a commonly held myth. Immigrations did not change peoples names. When a ship pulled into a U.S. port the ships captain was required to have a manifest of all passengers. If anyone has searched ancestry or the Ellis Island site you can find these manifests. Immigration took the names off of these lists and then matched the people coming off the ship to that manifest. My father-in-law is typical of people who had their name changed, but not by immigrations. On the Ellis Island record his name was Majdanik, which is the name from Poland. I'm in contact with his family there to verify that. However, my father-in-law was illiterate and did not no how to spell his name. Just about every record I've found his name is spelled differently. My wifes name on her birth certificate is Madenich. I would guess it was the accent as heard by the record takers. They wrote down what they heard. A lot of names had that happen. Hi group: One of my lines is a Forrester family that was in Allegheny City. I found where they were buried in Union Dale Cemetery. On one of the headstones it has that he was born in Kircolm, Scotland. His brother has that he was born in Gallowayshire Scotland. Gallowayshire is the county where Kirkcolm is located. I got the church records from the Kirkcolm church and found the baptismal and marriage records for the family, except they were all listed as Foster. Then I found the immigration record for the parents and one son, which again listed them as Foster. But once they arrived in the US all of the records list them as Forrester, including the headstone for the parents. Any idea why the family would have changed names when they got here? I would suspect immigration misspelled it. Hello Again, While searching for more information on the mirror (below) I found this tidbit from an article called 'Remembering Pittsburgh' by Chris Potter, "Or consider the women's-page column by actress Lillian Russell, who advised women to place mirrors at floor-level around the house, so they could ensure their feet were properly displayed." Could Lillian Russell have owned this mirror? She lived in Pittsburgh around 1920. She was married to a man named Alexander Pollock MOORE - M the initial on the mirror. Thanks for any other ideas on this mirror or how to find out more about it. Tomi From: tomil23@hotmail.com To: paallegh@rootsweb.com Subject: Pittsburgh actress?
