It is also spelled Neel on various documents. My research shows that Adam Burchfield, III was b. Feb. 15, 1762, Green Briar, Baltimore, MD, the child of Adam Burchfield II and Ann (Nelson). He died in the Neal Log Cabin, April 24, 1826 and is buried in Turner's Graveyard adjacent to the cabin. He m. Mary Cochran (or Cochrane), ca 1788. Mary was the dau. of Samuel Cochran, Sr. (b. 1738, Ireland) and Mary (Shearer) and the granddau. of Joseph Sheirer (Shearer) and Mary (McClure). Mary (Shearer) was b. ca 1773; d. 19 Oct. 1853; Bur. John Turner Cemetery, Pittsburgh. Adam rented the Neal cabin in Schenley Park from Gen. James O'Hara and he established a store on Wood Street in partnership with a man named Woods. Adam later moved to McKeesport. Mary (Cochran) Burchfield was mentioned in her father's will as Mary "Polly" Burchfield. Adam Burchfield and Mary "Polly" (Cochran) had the following children: 1. Aaron 2. Joseph m. Jane McFarland (Note: lots of Kennedy's in this family) 3. Samuel C. b. 1794;d. 1873; Bur: Prospect Cemetery, Tarentum, Pa.; m. Margaret Barnett b. 1802; d. 1878; Bur: Prospect Cemetery; dau. of Joseph Barnett, Sr. of Peebles Twp. Allegheny Co., Pa. The Burchfield farm was on Bull Creek Road opposite Tour Ed Mine, Tarentum, PA. 4. Priscilla b. 1802, Neal Cabin, Schenley Park; d. 5 Mar. 1873, Allegheny City; m. James M. b. 1816/17 The Children of Samuel Cochran, Sr. and Mary (Shearer) married into the family of James Neel and Rachel (McClure): Samuel, Jr. m. Grizella Neel; Robert m. Dorcas Neel; Sarah m. Thomas Neel and Mary m. Samuel Neel. Samuel Cochran, Sr.'s will mentions 2 Neel Grandchildren, James and Polly who were to be looked after by his dau. Polly Burchfield. He also mentions as his daus: Mary "Polly Burchfield (m. Adam); James Glass; Elizabeth Means (m. Nathan); and Sarah who m. John George. INTERESTING: Turner's Graveyard is beside the Mary S. Brown Methodist Church on Beechwood Blvd. Simon Girty, Sr. was an Irish emigrant who settled at Chambers Mills a few miles above the present city of Harrisburg. He was an Indian trader. He d. 1751, killed by an Indian. He m. Mary Newton who m. 2nd John Turner. Simon, Sr. and Mary (Newton) had: Thomas; Simon, Jr.; James & George. 1755 the Turners moved to the Juniata River where they were attacked by Indians and the whole family captured. John Turner, Sr. was tortured to death and the others were sent to various tribes. Mary Turner also knows as Mary Girty, when she was released settled on a tract of land in Squirrel Hill. John Turner, Jr. was released from the Indians and returned to his family in Squirrel Hill. John Turner was also known as John Girty. John Turner, Sr. and Mary (Newton/Girty) had a son John Turner, Jr. b. Feb. 1752; m. SUSANNAH CLARK, dau. of Charles Clark and Mary (???). Because Susanna had no children, each of her 3 sisters gave her a child to raise. When John McCaslin and Fanny (CLARK) moved from Pitt Twp. to Hampton Twp. in the 1790's, they left their son John McCaslin with the Turners. He was also known as John Turner McCaslin. Neal Log Cabin: The tract of land, which Robert Neal and his wife Elizabeth (???) called "Highland" was in Pitt Twp, Westmoreland Co.,Pa. It later became known as "Squirrel Hill" (Today it is in Allegheny Co.). The Supreme Executive Council of Pa patented the land on Decd. 10, 1787 to Robert Neill (Patent Book 11, p. 448). Robert Neill paid 34 pounds, 8 shillings for the tract of 262 acres. The recital in the patent states that the tract had been surveyed in pursuance of an application No. 3018 entered Apr. 11, 1769, by one Ambrose Newton whose right by virtue of "divers conveyances" became vested in Robert Neill. The land bordered the land of the "Widow Girty", the mother of the notorious renegade Simon Girty. Simon Girty, Sr., father of Simon Girty, married Mary Newton, an English girl in 1737. Simon, Jr. was born in 1741. In 1751, in a drunken frolic in Dauphin Co., an Indian named "the Fish" killed Simon, Sr. John Turner, who lived with Girty, killed "The Fish" in revenge. In 1753, John Turner married the Widow Girty. In 1756 Turner was killed by the Indians at Kittanning. Simon Girty, Jr. was captured by the Indians but his mother, the Widow Girty, now Turner, escaped and went to live in Pittsburgh. In 1759 the Indians released Girty to his mother at Pittsburgh. Simon returned to the Indians and became an infamous renegade as did his brothers James and George. The cabin is described in Stoltz's Early Architecture of Western PA. The Pittsburgh Bulletin on May 8 1915 printed a story written by J.M. Miller about the Neill Cabin. 1795 Robert Neill sold the land and cabin to John Reed who later sold the land to Brintall Robbins. In 1795, Robert signed his name as Neil but the deed says Neal. The acknowledgement says Neill. (Deed Book Vol. 4, pl 472). In 1813 Robbins sold the Neal cabin and both tracts of land known as Highland and Mt. Airy to Gen. James O'Hara. James O'Hara's 1st tenant was ADAM BURCHFIELD of Maryland. When James O'Hara died he left his land and the log cabin to his dau. Mary who in 1821 m. William Croghan, Jr. of KY. The Croghan's had a dau. Mary who m. Capt. Edward W.H. Schenley of the English Army. In Oct. 1889, Mrs. Mary E. (Croghan) Schenley donated 300 acres of the Mt. Airy tract to the City of Pittsburgh for a park. Hope this helps you. Especially interested in FRANK GIMPER/GIMBER who married Magdalena BRAHM and died around 1900...I'm having a hard time with any info on FRANK. He may have owned a binding or shoe shop in Pittsburgh...The GIMPER/HUEBNER families lived around Carrick, Brentwood on the South Side. Thanks SO much.
The German side of my family lived mostly in Sharpsburg, Glenshaw, Homestead and Lawrenceville. They include Gloss/Closs/Glass, Lacier, Kerr, Millheisler (spelled a million different ways), Runge and Lutz. I've hit a brick wall with Lacier, Kerr and Runge. The Polish side of my family lived mostly in Lawrenceville, Oakland, Bloomfield and Polish Hill. They include Szramowski, Faust, Goralski, Nalitz, Wisniewski, Gepert, Pysrzymowski, Myszewski and Jankowski. This list has been extremely helpful. Thanks for all the info everyone shares. Most of what I'm working on are ancestors who came to Allegheny county from other places in the 1780s and 1790s; the ANDERSONs and WEIBEL/WIBLEs from Lancaster county, the McFARLANDs from Franklin county. Ancestral immigrants to the Allegheny River corridor (Clarion, Armstrong, and northern Butler counties) are ORR and COULTER. And then there are the much later immigrants TRIEBL and ZAUNER from Hungary/Romania, and STRUTZ from Slovenia through Austria and Germany. Thanks to everybody who is part of this message group.
