I haven't received anything all afternoon. I sent several messages but they have not come through. Clare in Fla.
Zurich is a nice place to visit and a trip there to hand them the euros may cost less than the bank fees. :) good luck. On Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 11:10 AM, C. To the ALL List: A journalism history colleague has sent me this link to newspaper resources at the LOC and elsewhere. Corban Goble http://www.loc.gov/rr/news/oltitles.html Newspaper Archives/Indexes/Morgues. This Library of Congress site includes links to newspaper archive sources on the Internet, including full texts and indexes. “These are the ones your local library used to keep in a card catalog, but have since automated. This list also includes projects with searchable, digitized images of the papers.”
I'm talking about archival institutions, not private researchers for hire, which always (so far in my experience) instruct you to wire money to their local bank. That's their terms and there's no changing it. U.S. banks offer online payment facilities to other U.S. banks which require the use of routing numbers such as those in the bottom left corner of your personal checks. Transferring money to a foreign bank requires the use of SWIFT codes and IBAN numbers - and extra fees for the service and for the currency conversion. I do have a private researcher in Germany who has been making payments to other EU banks on my behalf. Her bank charges only 5 Euros for the service. I PayPal her the money to cover it and they charge a modest currency conversion fee. This works okay but I'd rather not have to rely on her. I'm wondering if it's finally time to get that Swiss bank account I've always wanted IF they'll let me wire money from online. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Steitz" <john.steitz@gmail.com> To: <paallegh@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2011 10:14 AM Subject: Re: [ALL] OT: Making overseas payments > Credit cards are the easiest way but occasionally no dice there. > I have used paypal successfully with a willing researcher I know others > who > have sent a US check with ample conversion extra > I have also sent a small amount of euros cash, not recommended but it > worked > on the small. > > John > Ireland, Germany > On Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 10:03 AM, J T Walton <jtwalton13@comcast.net> > wrote: > >> Jim, >> I hope when you find a solution, you will let us all know. I have a Rosina Russell who is on the 1850 Norfolk, VA Census. It states that she was the dau. of Delia and the sister of Hester A. b. 1833, VA. Those names are wrong. Now for the truth. Delia is really Adelia (Ball) Russell, the widow of Thomas Russell of England who was lost at sea May 1835. Hester is Esther (Russell) Russell who married a non-relative William Parker Russell. They lived in Norfolk. Adelia lived in Northampton Co., VA and she married there Nov. 8, 1832. The 1840 Census lists Dela (Adelia) as living in Northampton, VA. By 1844 Adelia was living in Norfolk, VA. Adelia d. 28 Jan. 1882, Norfolk, VA. With the various name's for Adelia I am guessing that the "Adeline" Russell who lived with W.P. Russell and his wife Esther on the 1860 Census was really Adelia. The 1860 does not list Rosina as living in the household nor could I find her anywhere. I cannot find Adelia or any name similar on the 1870 Census. I never thought of checking PA. Adelia had 2 brothers, John and Luther. Her father was John Ball who d. 1811 in Worcester Co. MD. Once again I am guessing but it is possible that Rosana is the illegitimate dau. of Adelia. What dates involve your Rosana Russell? Credit cards are the easiest way but occasionally no dice there. I have used paypal successfully with a willing researcher I know others who have sent a US check with ample conversion extra I have also sent a small amount of euros cash, not recommended but it worked on the small. Jim, I hope when you find a solution, you will let us all know. Many of us have the same problem, where places won't accept our credit cards. Listers, Please forgive the off-topic question. I know some people here research overseas and am hoping some of the Allegheny county locals, or anyone, may point me in a good direction. Researching ancestry in Europe often involves finding the right archive institution and requesting a record search. If you're lucky enough to get a response, they will send you the record/s of interest along with an invoice. The invoice contains information necessary to wire money, in Euros, to their bank. Our local banks typically charge a $40-$50 fee to do an overseas wire transfer, which is nearly equal to the research fees in many cases. Western Union charges around half that depending on destination. PayPal or POP sevices do not wire money to banks, only to email accounts. Does anyone know of a reasonable way to wire money to overseas banks? Private replies please. Thanks... Jim Strutz
I recently accidentally came across this site which, so far, has enabled me to find the possible names of the wives, and some of their children for 4 of my once removed cousins. Combining the information from this site with the SSDI I was also enable to obtain birth and death dates for both along with the ZIP code of where they were living when they died. This site provides the death date, back into the 1800's ( my oldest was 120 years) along with a list of Known Relatives. In the list all married women are listed by their married names, in some instances you may get their parents. Finding one name you think may be the one, checking the Known Relative list may give you a female name that is possibly the wife. Going through the list again looking for the female name should give you your males name, in the Known Relative list, which possibly means that they are husband and wife. I then compared the names I found with their names on the SSDI and found the vital statistics. The web site is: www.peoplesearch.com Use the Advanced Search option. Just input surname, city and state. This will return you a list of people having that surname in the city you had searched. Just hope that the name is not a real common one, like Russell; they wanted me to provide a more specific location. There are too many people with the Russell name in Pittsburgh's history for them to provide at once. I'm looking for a Rosana Russell who at one time lived in the 100 block of W. Steuben St. She was previously married to a unknown Sharpe. Neither of the husbands names turns up where I can match with her. I found her though without any references. You can obtain additional information on your finds for a price. Hope this helps someon. Jerry Dittman Boonsboro, MD

The LDS has fewer Catholic than Protestant records but some are there. No particular area, yes vs no. My German Catholic (Katholiche) origin was recorded by Church in Pittsburgh. Knowing that origin, I could find someone in Germany to help me. Quite a few German family records for villages are out there in print if you can make some inquiries. I used the Gen-de mail list. You can inquire in English or German ( I say that so you aren't alarmed when you see postings in German) and someone will offer a hand if they know something or someone who does. I read somewhere (forget where) that LDS does not have records from Germany, if the family was Catholic. Is this correct? I was able to locate records at LDS for one line of my mothers family, in Germany, and they were Lutheran; but have not been able to locate ANYTHING for my mothers fathers family, Wagner - and thinking possbly they were Catholic and that is why I can't locate records. (my understanding was that the Catholic church has not given LDS permission to scan the records). thanks, Ruth
I keep these 2 sites handy for more general German origin questions. Marybeth's sites are good but predominently eastern Germany. I have others but these are my short list. Obviously, familysearch by LDS is the best. This should give you some ideas: http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/en/Default.aspx You may want to try the telephone book. I switched it over to English version. I hope it sticks: http://www2.dastelefonbuch.de/english.html I doubt you will find your ancestors telephone listing but you might be able to get some idea where groups of the family is now. Beverly I have done a fair amount with German research. In general look for a British flag in the toolbar is the first choice . Otherwise, I know that Google has a translation function or try Babelfish translater available on internet. If you are inquiring don't worry about using English, they all know our language. Hi Janice, If this is the Proudfoots that owned a plumbing company I might be able to help you out. My uncle worked for them for years before he retired. Let me contact my cousins and see what they know and I'll get back to you. Sharon
