    3. Is that just for Allegheny County PA? I am surprised the article does not give a reference as to how to find out more about the records. I thought some of those old records were given to the University of Pittsburgh, but perhaps I am remembering something else. 3. I just read in the May/June 2010 issue of "Family Chronicle" magazine, page 52 about Coroner Case Files. In that issue I read "The database holds approximately 206,000 individual names, dates and docket numbers associated with the case file. Within seconds, it can be searched to determine if a file exists. The only information needed to search the database is first and last name." Is this database available online, so that I can search it from my home, to see if a case file does exist for my ancestor? If so, can someone please provide the link and instructions. Thank you Mickey ...the impossible just takes longer MickeyC@consolidated.net

    3. Dear Listers Does anyone know anything about a Thomas Payton Funeral Director? I'm looking for information about the funeral home that was located at 30 McClure Avenue, Allegheny City. I've two obits that list him as the funeral director. I was able to locate him in city directories and the address in the maps on historic Pittsburgh. The time frame I have is 1880 - 1900 but I'm sure he was practicing longer than that. I appreciate your help. Thanks Lauraly

    3. Well, I'm going to jump in here. Carol, if they lived in County Down, are you sure they attended the Church of Ireland there? Were they Irish, or Scots who immigrated during the Plantation of Ulster period? If so, they were probably Presbyterians in Ireland and Presbyterians in Pittsburgh. It is my understanding that most of the Protestants in Northern Ireland were Presbyterians. Correct me if I am wrong. The Church of Ireland is a Protestant church. The Chutrch of Ireland is the Irish equivalent of The Church of England. It became the official legal church of Ireland because the crown made it that way. The Catholic Church in Ireland was illegal or at least unrecognized until mid 1800's as were several other religions to varing degree. That I am 100% certain. I am not certain but believe they would have been Episcopal in Pittsburgh similar to Evangelische in germany being called Lutheran in US. 3. St Augustine is a Catholic Church. 3. Carol- I am guessing Episcopal as equivalent to Church of England. I know of no feud between Church of Ireland and Church of England. The same, just different countries. 3. Does anyone have ties to a the Giltrap (Gilltrap, Goldtrap, Gouldtrap, etc.) surname? I have found a William H. Giltrap and wife, Ellen, in the mid to late 19th century city directories. At one time they were living in the 17th ward (Lawrenceville area). I am on the trail to prove that my 3rd great-grandmother, Margaret Roy, wife of Robert, was a Gouldtrap before an 1846 marriage in Kilkeel,Down, Ireland. They also lived in the 17th ward. A related question: Where did families who attended the Church of Ireland before immigration worship in the 17th ward area? Was there a pulling away from the state church when the Scot-Irish immigrated? Thank in advance for any clues. Carol

Dear listers, I am new to the Allegheny listserv and would be interesting to hear from people about what resources -- online or offline -- they have found to be the most helpful with their research. I am already familiar with the microfilms I can order from LDS. My family appears to have come from Ireland shortly in the early 1800s and left Allegheny prior to 1850.
