looks like you might have dodged the current wave of winter storm, huh? My little map in the Sacramento Bee shows the storm heading along the northern edge of PA - with just some token nastiness for Pgh. B

Hi, Can someone please send me the link for the list of Google Newspapers that can be searched? I know I had it bookmarked at one time, but can't find it. Thank you. Carol
Some listers may want to try this out as a possible research tool: Google Realtime Get live updates from popular social sites, news sources, and blogs http://www.google.com/realtime examples: type "geneaology" into the search engine type _your city_ into the search engine etc. Norm

In the May/June 2010 issue of "Family Chronicle" magazine, page 52, Lisa A. Alzo wrote about the availability of the Allegheny County Coroner Case Files. In that issue she wrote "The database holds approximately 206,000 individual names, dates and docket numbers associated with the case file. Within seconds, it can be searched to determine if a file exists. The only information needed to search the database is first and last name." In addition she provided the following two links: http://www.library.pitt.edu/libraries/archives/archives.html and http://coronercasefile.pbworks.com/w/page/16512016/FrontPage Unfortunately, I could find no online index of these 206,000 individual names, so I posted this question on the list a few days ago and while some folks tried to help, they too, seemed unable to find such an online index. This prompted me to pose my question on the "Ask a Librarian" link found on one of Pitt's pages. In short, there is NO ONLINE INDEX available, [please see the response that I just received, pasted at the bottom of this message.] It seems a shame that there is no online index available. While I certainly have no objections to the $12.00 process and copying fee charged for a Coroner's Case File, it does seem a bit steep to pay out, just to learn that there is no Coroner's Case File, for a particular person, when the "article" said that the search could be done in a matter of seconds. ---------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pflug, Wendy M" <wendyp@pitt.edu> To: "Withers, Clare Anne" <cwithers@pitt.edu>; <MickeyC@consolidated.net> Cc: "ULS - Ask a Librarian" <uls-askalibrarian@mail.pitt.edu>; "ULS - Archives Service Center Reference" <archives-ref@mail.pitt.edu> Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2011 11:48 AM Subject: RE: Ask A Librarian Coroner's Files Index Dear Mickey Cendrowski, This message is in response to your question about the Coroner Case Files. Listers, Special thanks to listmember Lynn Beatty for supplying the Google Newspaper Archives indexing titled "_Military Service_" (of Allegheny County veterans), posted on USGenWeb's http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/death-index.htm webpage. This indexing includes articles and interviews reflecting the views of our hometown WWI military personnel and their war-time activities while fighting for our freedoms. Due to its nature, the links are NOT included on our "Daily (Death Index) Update" webpage at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~njm1/Daily-Update-Submitted-Newspapers.html I've just posted a separate Military Service webpage of "links", referencing surnames/newspapers indexed by Lynn at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~njm1/11AC-WWI-Military-Service.html Anyone wishing to contribute their family WWI Vet's data, and/or photos for inclusion on this webpage, may contact me privately. A reminder . . . some Allegheny County War Memorials posted at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~njm1/memorials2002.htm Happy Researching -- Norm

Well done, everyone! And glad the email glitch has been solved.
For those who never saw this come thru (including me), I am resending this entry- more updates are on the way- > Trying this yet again as I haven't seen it come thru--- > > A very special heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers on our indexing project. Who knew that one year ago one idea would spawn, er motivate, the overwhelming amount of genealogy tidbits for death, marriage, divorce and pictures of old Pittsburgh newspapers? > > And now, let me introduce you to the brainchild for the military index who has SINGLEHANDEDLY indexed almost 27000, well ok-it's really only 26,972 names from WWI in a little over a month!!! List, After much hair pulling and watching the ole blood pressure rise, I have the solution to the recent issue of ATT/Bellsouth blocking the list entries and kicking us off of Rootsweb subscriptions due to spam. Apparently, the recent rash of list members using "Roll Call" as the subject jumpstarted the problem. Add that to the recent merger of Yahoo and ATT email and their subsequent ramping up their spam guard. We were caught in the "perfect storm". All that needs to be done is to either go to the ATT site and manually turn off the spam and resubscribe to rootsweb. The ATT rep I talked with sent me the posts that I have missed. BTW, this also affected the subscription to the Washington Count list as well. Another option is to call ATT and they can send you the emails you missed. Hope this helps. Stay warm. annie
