    3. I agree with Bill and Wilberta. Prussia changed shape constantly. Although this isn't too close to the rhine River the Rhen is a clue and I would bet this was the Rhenish subdivision of Prussia at that time. I also looked at the German telephone book. There are quite a few "Bellmann" very near Wallerfangen, Saarland today. I have seen quite a few Pittsburghers from that area which also helps. I hope that helps John On Mon, Feb 7, 2011 at 10:17 AM, William Muller <muller1938@gmail.com>wrote: > Be careful about what constitutes a map of Prussia. 3. Be careful about what constitutes a map of Prussia. From at least the 1600s, Prussia was more or less continually enlarging with changing borders. You will need to know about what date and then look for a map of that time. First, remember that most records we find on our ancestors were NOT written by our ancestors, but by clerks, pastors, officials, teachers, lawyers, census takers, and others. Not only were the records written by others, but for the most part, we have no idea who gave the information! So your baptism record, perhaps written by the pastor or priest or church secretary or a nun, MAY have had information given by the father....but the town name COULD have been given by the child¹s mother or by one of the grandparents or who knows whom??? That said, I¹ve taken a look in my contemporary ADAC (German AAA) MaxiAtlas [scale: 1:150,000] to see if your Wasllerfangen might be listed in the gazetteer section. There is no town by that spelling, in the more than 90,000 localities listed. This does NOT mean there is no town of that name, just that this particular detailed atlas does not list it. HOWEVER, glancing down the page of alpha¹d locations I do come across: WASSERALFINGEN, now in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The town - about 3.5km north of Aalen has a current ³zip code² [Postleitzahlen] of 73430. W-fingen lies east of the large city of Stuttgart and north of the large city of Ulm. You might be very lucky, depending on time-frame, since the LDS has two microfilms of Catholic Church parish register records from Wasseralfingen 1834-1902: Geburten [Births] 1834-1900 FHL INTL Film #936126 Heiraten [Marriages] 1834-1887 Tote [Deaths] 1834-1902 FHL INTL Film #936127 I do NOT KNOW if this village is the location you¹re searching for, but, were I you, I¹d certainly give it my first try! Good luck! Cari Thomas

    3. You might find help by going to the www.jewishgen.org and go to the town site. They frequently will give the old name & a new name. This site is good for Poland & other places, such as Germany, etc. It is an interesting site and very helpful if you are looking for Jewish or non-Jewish ancestors. I took a class at one of the national conferences & found it very helpful. 3. Helen, I had the same problem with the local Methodist "office". They had no record of a Methodist church in Banksville. The land and/or the church building itself reportedly was a donation from Eli Neeld and the mere existence is documented in some old maps which I duplicated and sent to the office to show them that their records weren't as good as they presumed. Unfortunately that was also the extent of the info as they now know of its existence but that's it. The church later merged with the Dormont Methodist church but that is the extent of Dormont's records. I hope you have better luck in your search. 3. Helen: Here's your proof. Center of the map on the left hand side. http://images.library.pitt.edu/cgi-bin/i/image/image-idx?sid=6d65ccd5c019cb4c2b50cbf35c46e568;med=1;q1=bingham;rgn1=hopkins_all;q2=cemetery;op2=And;rgn2=hopkins_all;size=20;c=hopkins;lasttype=boolean;view=entry;lastview=thumbnail;subview=detail;cc=hopkins;entryid=x-20090218-hopkins-0008;viewid=20090218-HOPKINS-0008.TIF;start=1;resnum=2 If the link scrolls and doesn't work go to Historic Pgh maps, search the gm hopkins company maps and search for bingham and cemetery.
