At a meeting with a speaker from Fort Pitt Museum I asked pretty much the same question (looking for an ancestor who was supposed to have been there at that time and is a brick wall). He told me they did have records for soldiers that were there. Have not had a chance to follow up on that. My great-grandmother is Lizzie M. Collier who lived in Wilkinsburg and Pitcairn. She died in 1964, age 92. On her death certificate, it has listed as cause of death: bronchopneumonia which she had had for two days. I understand what that is. But it then lists two ailments under the pneumonia entry as "due to" Encephalomalacia 10 years and cerebral sclerosis 10 years. I looked up those diseases on the internet, but didn't get very satisfactory explanations. And my Nurse Practitioner sister-in-law was not really helpful either. Can anyone explain those diseases? Were they terms used back in the 60s for dementia? Encephalomalacia means softness in the brain, whatever that means. And I couldn't find anything on the cerebral sclerosis. the search engine always brought MS. Bill Johnson
Cerebral sclerosis would be accumulation of plaque in the blood vessels of the brain, hardening of the arteries it was called before. It sounds like a form of demential But I can not see any connection to the pneumonia. What I would think is that she the pneumonia was the cause of death and the others were other things that she had but not contributing to the pneumonia. The Heinz History Center is quite expensive I think in their hourly research about $29.50 plus. It would pay me to drive there and do it my self. I have not made contact with the church yet as there was no answer. I was hoping there would be information at the cemetery but only have where she is located and information from funeral home. Amazing that they had it since 1890. If you go to the Historic Pittsburgh website and look under maps at the Hopkins map of Allegheny City 1890 Vol. 2 plate 8 you will find Perry Street. It is 2 blocks north of East Ohio. Its present name is Peralta Street. In 1890 it was Perry and you might find the exact property of your ancestor. Given the proximity to the Voeghtly German Evag. Prot. Church, just 2 blocks away at the intersection of East Ohio and Troy Hill Road it is very possible that they went there. However, the St. Paul's church was a break away congregation and located about as close so they might have gone there. The article April 16, 1905 states it is from the quarter sessions court. The hearing was slated for April 29th 1905. I was wondering if the records of the quarter sessions court are available. It is my understanding if bodies were moved there was an accounting of those bodies. This was for another cemetery in Tennessee. Are those records available? There have been other cemeteries that have been moved. I've hit a brick wall with my Cavanagh/Cavanaugh families in the 1850's. I wonder if one of those moved cemeteries has my Mary Cavanaugh in it. Its in the process of looking. I would like very much if you could scan and send me the April 16, 1905 article if possible to support my request for them to search. In the mean time. On or about April 27, 1927 the remain bodies (about150 I have been told) were lifted and re-interred in Southside Cemetery in a common grave. Norm Meinert has two pictures on his website of the Memorial Stones for those re-buried. A list did exist in a book in the Southside Cemetery of those re-interred. It should still be there. I am hoping that the present staff will look for it and put it on disc. Now it is possible that your Mary Cavanaugh was moved privately. Perry Street was in the east section of Allegheny City where there were a number of German speaking churches, but the two congregations that referred to themselves as German Evangelical Protestant were the Voegtly Church (records at the Heinz History Center library) and the St. Paul'a (Weitershausen) Church (records are now with the leaders of the Allegheny United Church of Christ congregation). JR and Helen, Thank you both for your help. I have written to Rev. Thayer regarding records for Spencer United Methodist Church. I have been searching for my baptism record for years with no result. AIS lists a microfilm for the church 1901-1962 but the film was apparently sent out on inter-library loan and not returned. I hope Rev. Thayer can help me.
