    3. Carol: You can go to your local library that does inter-library loan and see if that film is on the list of those available, but the State Library does do inter-library. If it's available the price is nominal. Larry On 3/19/2011 8:09 PM, carol battin wrote: > Larry, > > This is the source listed at the PA Archives in Harrisburg. > Can a copy be ordered from there? 3. Larry, This is the source listed at the PA Archives in Harrisburg. Can a copy be ordered from there? I have never tried to order anything from Harrisburg or NARA. I find both web sites confusing concerning prices and ordering. Since I don't see myself traveling to either location soon, I would appreciate you or anyone else filling me in on the ordering process. That way both questions will be answered: time frame covered by that census as well as locating copies of that census. NARA used to have a procedure by which one could rent census films and read them at home/local college/local LDS Library, etc. Were I to _hazard_ a guess: I would give that census a try. 3. Carol, what was the last name of the children? Virginia -----Original Message----- From: paallegh-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:paallegh-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of carol battin Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2011 12:01 PM To: paallegh@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ALL] 1880 Schedules of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes Mary Frances, Thank you so much for your reply. My grandfather and siblings were placed in the Presbyterian Home for Destitute Children in Allegheny City prior to 1880. Their father died in 1875. Their mother delivered her youngest child after the father's death. The little girl was in the orphanage at a very young age. One of the sons died there. The children are listed in the 1880 census but I have not been able to find their mother. She is listed several years after in the city directory as a widow. I am interested in finding out where she was and why she was not with the children. This schedule could answer my questions concerning this family. As far as I can tell, it is not readily available. The LDS Library does not list the Pennsylvania copy. Do you know if NARA could send a microfiche copy to me? I would appreciate your opinion concerning whether this non-population census would be of help to me. 3. Mary Frances, Thank you so much for your reply. Many years ago, I studied this census at NARA and found much of value to me with my own family research. It is important to note that I was searching all possible avenues for explanation of an unusual medical condition found in my family that previously no one of the elders had heard of. So, this 1880 census is filled with information, as is stated in its title, of defective, dependent and delinquent classes (of human beings). There is much information on persons who were ill, blind, deranged, paralyzed, etc. It is not a mortality schedule. When known, parents and residences are named/identified as is the health (loosely termed) issue. If you have more questions, please ask and I will try to answer although it was many years ago when I studied these types of census rolls. Mary Frances

    3. I just noticed the above item listed at Ancestry.com. Though not available to search there, it is listed as *Roll 10: 1880 Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes: Adams and Allegheny counties *at the National Archives. Has anyone ever seen this census? Is this schedule just a "head count" or does it contain specific information for individuals? This source might answer some questions I have had concerning one of my families. Thanks for any help, Carol in WV
