I recently sent a post to the list with the Ammons surname. After some help from Jerry Dittman with links I did not have, I was able to locate a cousin who corrected the spelling. It is AMEND not Ammons. Other surnames connected with this name are CARSON BALL McCLELLAN AMEND CRAIG COFFINBARGER and KRAVETZ. Anyone see a possible connection? Family lived in Wilkins Twp., late 1800's to early 1900's, and the Turtle Creek area. Marybeth acmbjc@aol.com
Thank you so much. I've been looking for Riceville forever and this is it. I read through the booklet and found the name of the Priest to confirm that it is positively the place and church. Thank you again. -----Original Message----- From: Sandra Brandon <sbrandon@sandale.us> To: paallegh <paallegh@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thu, May 5, 2011 11:56 am Subject: Re: [ALL] Riceville Boro, PA Bernie try this, http://digital.library.pitt.edu/cgi-bin/t/text/text-idx?ALLSELECTED=1;xc=1;g pitttextall;type=simple;q1=riceville;c=pitttext;c=pitttextdir;rgn=full%20te t;view=reslist;subview=detail;sort=occur;start=1;size=25;didno=317350516523 2;cc=pitttext Title: Brochure commemorating the diamond jubilee of Holy Trinity Church, ittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 20th-21st-22nd, 1932 uthor: Holy Trinity Church (Pittsburgh, Pa.) ollection: Historic Pittsburgh Text Collection If the URL doesn't work just go to Historic Pittsburgh ttp://digital.library.pitt.edu/p/pitttextall/ nd, type in Riceville and look for the Title. I would imagine that there were many "hollows" throughout Allegheny County that might have been labeled 'Pleasant Valley." That said, the reference to it being within "the city" in 1868 would lead me to think it was either in Pittsburgh or Allegheny City. The section of Allegheny City that was called Pleasant Valley was the "hollow that is presently called the Charles Street Valley. It was an area served by one of the early trolley lines called Federal Street and Pleasant Valley RR. It connected Brighton Road (formerly the toll road called the New Brighton Road ie. the road to New Brighton on the Ohio) with the Perrysville Road, now called Perrysville Ave. The lowr section of the present Charles Street was Taggart Street. Taggart was a tanner and there was probably some nasty oders associated with that business. The tolley connected , whet we North Siders called PV with that part of Perrysville Ave that was the campus of the Western University od PA (Pitt) before it moved to Oakland. "Peasant" must have been a moniker of the areas romantic rural past where cows grazed rather than where they were slaughtered. > From: NKARNS@travelers.com > To: paallegh@rootsweb.com > Date: Wed, 4 May 2011 15:14:57 -0400 > Subject: Re: [ALL] Pleasant Valley in Allegheny Co > > When I googled "pleasant valley" +"euphonious" in google books, I got > a hit for a book called Recollections of 70 years & historical gleanings > of Allegheny, Pa., by a John E. There definitely is a place called Pleasant Valley in or around Sharpsburg, It may just be called that by the "old timers". My late father-in-law's family of 12 (family of Frank and Mary Lupinacci) lived in the hollow at Pleasant Valley back around the time of the Depression. Over the years I have often heard it spoken of by the family. I know I have been in the area (and past where they lived many years ago) when going up to St. Mary's Cemetery on what I believe is called Sharp's Hill. I'm struggling to remember what I have heard over the years. On google books, you can see the Table of Contents and I think the whole book is readable on google books. You're right, it's not in any local libraries but if your library still does interlibrary loan, you can get it that way. In case no one uses google books, web address is www.books.google.com. -----Original Message----- From: paallegh-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:paallegh-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JR Jamieson Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2011 3:57 PM To: paallegh@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ALL] Pleasant Valley in Allegheny Co I wonder if the book referred to the old Allegheny City and not Allegheny County?
