I sent the following email (see date below) but the book/source title did not come through on the post. The title is: "REPORT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MINES OF PENNSYLVANIA, (VOLUME 1), PAGE 503." I did not realize that if I copied and pasted it from another site, such as Mocavo.com, it would not appear. Sorry for the error, and hope this is of some help to Joseph, or to anyone searching for ancestors who were miners. Marybeth acmbjc@aol.com ================================================================================== Sent: Sat, Dec 28, 2013 12:57 pm Subject: Re: the MINES question and a link/site Joseph and Listers: I found this link/site on "Mocavo.com", while searching for my Great-grandfather, Joseph E. STANIEK. [In the 1870-1880-1900 censuses he and several of his brothers worked on the railroad in Pittsburgh.] To add to the confusion I have an old photo, circa 1910, taken of Joseph wearing a mining hat, with the light atop it. He died in 1917 resulting from TB, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, without a headstone in a single grave. His wife Nancy Jane/Jennie nee Wilmot Staniek died in 1897, burial unmarked in Allegheny Cemetery. Anyhow, I have tried to bring up this link, but the Mocavo.com site wants paid access, which I do not have. If anyone has access to this source and could do a lookup, I would greatly appreciate it. There is a link to it on Google books, but it is a browse search with many pages. Maybe your ancestor can be found in this source, Joseph. My guess is that these miners were recruited by the mine companies, as there are a lot of Eastern European names listed. Hope this is of some help. Why don't you email Ray W. the guy who runs the website? I've emailed him before, and he will respond. Carol, yes, it is worth your time and money and hope to hire a pro genealogist who specializes in your area of research. Following the deaths of our nephew and my sister-in-law who did the background plus, on the POWELL lineage, I took some courses at several prominent genealogical/historical venues. While on the sites, that is at the venues, I learned, and had the privilege of seeing, professional genealogists/historians at work. This I can attest: if it is out there a specialist in your area of interest will find it. If it is not there, you will be told in great detail of all sites searched as well as the subsequent results. If the professional sees hope of finding something elsewhere, at greater investment of time and your money, you will be so informed. I cannot recommend adequately the services of a professional researcher who specializes in your area of interest. This service can be costly, so most work is covered by contract. Best of luck and success in your quest, Mary Fran On Thu, Dec 26, 2013 at 4:55 PM, <mikesmom958@aol.com> wrote: > Hello all! Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!
