    3. Hi everyone! By now I’m sure everyone has heard the sad news Rootsweb Mailing Lists will be disabled March 2, 2020. All lists will be archived for future researchers. Today I wanted to extend an Invitation to join our nearly 800 members strong Facebook group Pennsylvania Dutch Life. Debra Orner and I decided to welcome all of the list users to come over and join us! We discuss a little bit of everything. PA Dutch culture and heritage, area history, announcements of local events, and genealogical topics. Below is the link. https://www.facebook.com/groups/107084541429/?epa=SEARCH_BOX All we ask is your Facebook profile have a face picture. Hope to see you soon! Rick B PADL Group Owner and Admin

    3. Hi All, Looking for Kettenbach Family in Allegheny county area & surrounding areas. Always heard we also lived in Ingomar & Bellevue. Great grandfather Jacob Kettenbach owned a farm in the north area of the county. I have an old county map that shows where it’s located but that’s all I really have except for newspaper articles that ran a story on the tragic death of his daughter. Wish I was closer to the county. Live in Florida for the last 60+ years. :) Thank you. 3. Yes, groups io sends you notification of postings. You can get individual message or in a digest (10-12 messages) or a daily summary or special notices only - your choice per group. I do see a thing about signing in at the top, which I didn't do. Is that how you would access a particular group? Next, do these groups transmit posted messages to all who are on the group list like the Rootsweb query lists? If it doesn't, then there is no need for me to sign in and join a group because I don't have time to be checking in to all the groups I would join or have signed on to like I have with Rootsweb.  In other words, if, say someone on the NJMORRIS list posts a message, on this new group, would I get an email with the attached message? Or would I have to constantly check-in and find my several groups to see if anything has recently been posted? I guess, if I wouldn't get a message, that I would become one of those people that have their cell phones attached to their hands and it has become glued because they are constantly searching for a bunch of junk and have no time for conversations, reading a book book (hardcover or soft), and fail to pay attention to where they are walking and/or driving! If there is no email notice, then I wouldn't be interested. 3. About where this list can go, I am not sure it makes any sense to set up a new list at a paid site when there are free mailing list servers already available that many lists are changing to. The two I know of are groups.io and google groups. There is a rumor going around that groups.io is not free, but that is definitely not true. They have services one can pay for, but those are not essential for simple basic mailing lists. the problem with moving to google groups, which can function as a simple mailing list, is that it is very difficult to join groups there if one does not set up a free google account (independent of gmail). And many people absolutely do not want to register with google. I understand that, although I personally use gmail all the time so it is not an issue for me.

    3. Hi Steven, First, my condolences on the loss of your mom. I’ve been a member of this list for about 15 years, and saw her name often. Members like your mom helped me so much during my early years navigating the intricacies of gen research! Back when ancestry was only about $50 for a year subscription... Anyway, I love your idea. I hope the administrator of the list serve does also. I would be interested in remaining a member through your option. I know many members have moved on to other platforms like FB, but I for one am tired of FB’s attitude and no longer use it. Thank you for bringing this to the table. I’ll be interested to see other members weigh in. 3. Hi folks, My name is Steven Owens. My mother, Helen Owens, was a member of this mailing list, before she passed away on March 30, 2019. I'm handling the estate which is why I received this email. I'm a software developer and I've run several mailing lists in the past, using the Mailman mailing list software. If any of the administrators of this list are interested, I'd be happy to set up a new list using dreamhost. Dreamhost offers Mailman as a "beta" (i.e. not officially supported) feature, but it's pretty straightforward to use. I have a dreamhost reseller account that I use for a variety of minor web sites. I'd be happy to set one up free of charge, until and unless the list gets enough traffic that dreamhost starts charging me more. However, unless something changes in a big way, I highly doubt there will be enough traffic for that happen. Alternatively, if the http://www.pagenweb.org/~allegheny/index.htm site is using a linux server and has sufficient server access to do so (shell access and root permissions, i.e. a virtual server), I'd be happy to help you set up a Mailmain install on that server. 3. To All list members and administrators: My sincere thanks to so many who have made the many Roostweb lists I have subscribed to for over 25 years an integral part of my keen interest in genealogy and a BIG thank  you for sharing so much of your life's history!!! I am very sad to learn of the closing of these lists, that have helped me learn so much about my family's history, my ancestors, their culture, the geography of where they came from; I could go on and on. Here is just a very brief list of my family surnames, and those of my husband's. ANDRUS  BOSWORTH  BRUECK/BRUCK  CARSON  CORRIGALL  DOLAN  FRANTZ/FRANCE  GEER  HALL  KELLY  LINGAUER McARTHUR  McNEILL  MUELLER  STANIEK  THOMSON  WILMOT  WRIGHT [and many more].  States include Michigan. Minnesota, New Jersey, my beloved Pennsylvania, to name a few. Here's hoping your brick walls come tumbling down! Regards, with peace and health in the New Year, 2020!
