    3. Oh my gosh! You folks are incredible!  I think that you found my missing ancestors.  I do think that the Margaret listed ijn the sick hospital/poor house.  I don't know anything about a Matilda, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.  Margaret's age is close, so I think that you may have found her, Debra. And the Forest Gill (or Hill) listed could well be my g-grandfather.  Again, the age is off by two years, but the census often gets such things a little off. Yes, I would definitely like to have an image of that page, Deb. Wow, I sure didn't know that Forest was listed as a step-son of William.  I know that he was, but I had always heard that Forest said that William was his father.  William came to New York from England in 1861 and joined the Union army.  He was wounded at Pickett's/Pettigrew's charge.  After recovering, he joined the 17th PA Calvary and fought until the end of the war. Then, he came back to Adams County and married Margaret. Forest was born in 1856, so he couldn't be William's son. I copied your post, too, Joan, as it will remind me to look further outside the box.  I had been searching in Franklin County and didn't think of searching through York, too, not to mention looking for other family names with whom an ancestor might be listed.. Thanks so much for everyone's help. You people are super! Sue Message: 2 Date: Sat, 12 Sep 2009 13:17:15 -0400 From: "D. Above her is a Samuel Hill, age 76. There is also a Matilda Slonaker, age 25, and a Forrest E Gill (or possibly Hill), age 3. On the edge of the census it says "Sick Hospital Adams County Poor House". Do you think these are yours? In 1880, Forrest Thompson is listed as the step-son to William Thompson, so while he might have assumed his step-father's last name, in 1860 he probably was still using his birth father's last name. Let me know if you'd like me to send you the image. Deb Stanish ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Sat, 12 Sep 2009 13:36:41 -0400 From: "D. In the Adams County 1860 census I couldn't find my great-grandfather as a  teenager--he wasn't with his parents. I searched and searched for every Henry  MYERS in the listings to try to find the right Henry. I finally studied  collateral family and found him living with his mother's sister and her husband  as an apprentice wagonmaster. However, finding them was still difficult because  the HANK family was misindexed as HAWK--an easy error for the transcriber to  have made when he didn't know these families. These types of misindexing often make it difficult to find the people  you are looking for as it did for me. Joan
