Hi Lee Anne: There are many spelling variations for Cobean. However, I am primarily interested in descendents of the Alexander & Samuel (& Samuel Alexander) Cobean families, that are extensively referenced in Gettysburg, and Pennsylvania history. The Civil War Museum, was moved to the original farm of Samuel Alexander Cobean, in 1999. The father of the original Cobean family, was I believe, John Cobean. He may have had brothers, named Alexander, James, William, Thomas & Samuel. The major spelling variations are: Cobean, Cobane, Cobain, de Cobain, Cobaen, Cobine/Cobin/Cobene, Cabban/Cabbane, etc. It appears that those using the Cobean spelling variation, emigrated to Pennsylvania ca 1760, Ohio & Virginia ca 1790, and Ontario ca 1823. The Cobain variation emigrated to Australia ca 1850, and several remained in the Antrim area of Ireland, Galway of Scotland & Yorkshire, England. The Cobane variation remained in northern Tyrone, before emigrating to USA, and Canada, later in the 1800's. The Cobine strain, moved to Monaghan, Ireland before emigrating to the USA in the mid-late 1800's. All records in Ireland, indicate the family was almost totally located in the counties of Antrim, first, ca 1640, and then Tyrone ca 1710, having moved to Antrim ca 1640 in the Plantation of Ulster.
