For 50 years I have been searching for the parents of Joshua Frederick Thompson.? Here's what I know about him: 1, His ancestors came from N. Ireland and were Scotch Irish.? They were protestants.? About 1735 a group of five or seven Irish brothers named Thompson left Ireland to come to America as indentured servants to work for people in or near Baltimore MD. When the ship entered Baltimore harbor the men literally jumped ship to avoid that service and seem to have scattered north and south.? This is family legend. We first find record of Joshua in Littlestown, PA, where he married the widow of Daniel Sell, whose name was Anna Mary Long.? Mary brought with her to the marriage several children by Mr.s Sell. She appears to have been a few years old than Joshua, who doesn't seem to have been married previously.? That would have him born sometime between 1795 and 1801. He and his sons dug water wells for a living, but also ran rum up and down? eastern states. In 1841, his wife Mary went to court to have Joshua declared an "Habituual Drunkard" and to have guardians appointed for her minor children.? After that he disappears from the face of the earth. He would only have been in his 50s. Mary at first asked for her friend and fellow abolitionist, Thaddeus Stevens to be appointed guardian of her eldest son, James Henry Thompson, b. 1827,?? He declined as he was spending most of his time then in Washington, although he had lived in Gettysburg for many years.? Mary Thompson's home was? taken by Gen Lee as his HQ for the battle of Gettysburg. Joshua was gone or dead by then. I just want to find Joshua's parents.? Amy Hutton
