    3. Anyone on the list researching Wilson and/or Wemyss/Weems? Also would like to know if there was a Bedell/Bedall/Beadle family living in or around Gettysburg late 1700s to early 1800s whose daughter, Jane, might have married a John Wilson? John was the eldest son of Robert Wilson and Mary Smith. Lost many of my Adams Co. contacts when my 98 computer got tired and died in July. Would like to have the email address for Kay Staub and the Adams Co., Historical Society Web Page. Thank you, Marilyn: Lake Co., IL

    1. RE: [PAADAMS] Wilson and Wemyss/Weems

    3. Marilyn - My maternal WILSON line is rooted in the York / Adams County area. Here is what I have re my "brick wall" in that line: Jesper WILSON (b. 1690) and his sons, Lowes, John (Sr.)(b. 1722) and James (b. 1725). I descend from James and his wife, Abigail (BLACKBURN) WILSON. Jesper operated a mill and a tavern . Jesper, along with sons John Sr. and James were vestrymen and wardens in the Huntingdon Church of SPG (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Lands (London based). The Huntingdon Church (not to be confused with Huntingdon County) is located in what is now York Springs, Adams County, PA. Jesper's wife is Ann (LNU) WILSON. Jesper died in 1770. Jesper's father is said to have been named John (no proof to-date). I have been told this branch of WILSONs is linked to the WILSONs in Chester County, PA and the state of Delaware during the build-up to and during the Revolutionary War. For another "grip" on this family, Abigail (b. 1727 in Ireland) is a daughter of John BLACKBURN, Sr., a well known Quaker personality in the area. John was a leader in the Warrington Meeting (York County) as well as the Menallen Meeting (Adams County)...he owned 175 acres off of Possum Creek in and around Menallen Township. Obviously, there was a conflict of religions between James (SPG) and Abigail (Quaker). They were married in 1748 in a Quaker ceremony....but perhaps, "just to make sure", they were married "out" a couple of years later. When Abigail's father and the Society of Friends found out about this "side marriage", Abigail was the focus of a "throwing out" proceeding. Like her brother, John BLACKBURN, Jr. who was thrown out for fighting Indians and again for trying to recruit Quakers to fight the British, Abigail was thrown out of the Society of Friends in the 4th month of 1750 (July). The WILSON and BLACKBURN families of these counties have all the makings of a great book and / or movie!! James and Abigail remained in the area for a number of years, living in Tyrone Township. Seven of their ten children were born there. Their 5 sons are named: James (b. 1752), John (b. 1763), Michael (b. 1765), Jasper (b. 1767...my direct...a twin of Rebecca) and Samuel (b. 1769). Jasper, Rebecca and Samuel were born in Guilford County, NC...a good place to hang out during the build up to the Revolutionary War if you were a Quaker or, most certainly, a follower of the SPG!!! When James died in 1782, Abigail did return to the Quaker faith in Guilford County. Hopefully, those given names might provide some clues. I only know of the descendants of 3 of James and Abigail's children (Jasper, John and Elizabeth (KERSEY) WILSON (b. 1761). All 3 of these lines can be studied on the internet. In addition, the BLACKBURN family website is one of the largest around. All can be found on a simple "google" search. I am sure at least a few layers of bricks in this brick wall are related to the WILSON religious affiliation with the SPG at that time in our nation's history (opinion). No records of this line heading up to Canada have been found (i.e., Tory leanings). This family just kept it's collective mouth shut and blended in...a great place to blend in was living anywhere the Quakers lived. Unfortunately, this blending in did not make it easy to study their families and their ancestors. Hope this helps! - Tom Wilson Boca Raton, Florida -----Original Message----- From: Marilyn Prinzing [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2005 12:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [PAADAMS] Wilson and Wemyss/Weems Anyone on the list researching Wilson and/or Wemyss/Weems?
