Hi Gordon, This is from the 1886 History of Adams Co Pa p 404, Cumberland Twp. Lots of info here. Jane Washington W. Witherow, miller and farmer, P.O. Green Mount, born near Fairfield, Adams Co., Penn., Feb 22, 1833, is a son of David & Nancy (Walker) Witherow, natives of Pennsylvania, and of Scotch-Irish descent. His father was a mill-wright by ttrade, and in early life pursued that occupation, but later followed farming. He died when our subject was 14 years old. He had 6 children, all of whom grew to maturity, Washington W. being the fifth. Our subject was reared on the farm, attended the common schools of Fairfield, and worked at both farming and milling until 1865 when he bought the mill and property and has since carried on the business himself. In purchasing this mill, he bought out the heirs, and settled a matter that had been in litigation for upward of forty years. In the mill are 2 sets of buhrs, one for grinding chop feed, and another for making flour; and attached to it is a small mill. In connection with the milling business, Mr. Witherow is engaged in farming. In 1863 he enlisted in Company B, a regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served as a non-commissioned officer until he was honorably discharged in 1864. In 1861 Mr. Witherow was married to Mary Crooks, of Scotch-Irish origin, daughter of Rev. Robert Crooks of the Methodist-Eposcopal Church, and to them were born seven children: Margaret Danner; Joseph Stewart, who is a miller and superintends the mill; Emmett Williams (deceased); Robert Crooks, a farmer; David Walker, Emma Elizabeth, Mary Louisa (deceased).
