    1. question on wills
    2. Neil Johnson
    3. Hi, I have my gggg-grandfather's will from 1804. In it he mentions allocating money for the cost of a funeral ("be paid by my executors hereafter named"). Would this imply that he was to be buried in an established cemetery rather that buried in a family cemetery on his property? From the map of the Manor of Maske I found on this site http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/3034/Manormap.html It would seem that his property (plot #79 and 78C) was very close to the Maryland border. In those days would it be an option to take the body that far? His second marriage in 1790 was at Rock Creek Congregation but since it is no more I don't know if they had a burial ground. Neil

This is merely a legal matter authorizing the executor of the Will to pay for his funeral expenses. I've seen a fair amount of these in various Wills (even today!). It doesn't imply he wanted to buried elsewhere (otherwise he would say so). > From the map of the Manor of Maske I found on this site > http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/3034/Manormap.html > It would seem that his property (plot #79 and 78C) was very close to the > Maryland border. > In those days would it be an option to take the body that far? Yes, it was possible, but they would have to pack the body in ice and sawdust which was hard to come by in those days and very expensive. If he authorized a lot of $$ for his funeral, this may be what he had in mind. Otherwise it's just conjecture. > His second marriage in 1790 was at Rock Creek Congregation but since it is no > more I don't know if they had a burial> ground. Hope this helps.
