Yeas. I've seen it both ways too. I was wondering if maybe I "browsed" the ward the convent was in if I could find it that way. Monica - If you are using the 1900 census from Ancestry, St. Joseph's Academy is on Page 14 of 29. Or SD12, ED7, Sheet 8A. Hope this helps. In my experience some censuses listed the woman by the name she took as a nun; in a couple of other instances I have found her surname listed prior to her religious name. I did not search the censuses by the name of the convent or religious institution, but rather by the individuals name. It can be tricky so you need to pull out all the stops. I have just learned that an ancestor of mine was a nun belonging to the order of Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut hill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She taught at St. Joseph Academy in McSherrystown, PA, and on March 28, 1904 died there. Does anyone know how I can go about finding the convent there in the census files? How do you go about finding nuns in the census? Her name was Julia Farrell, but as a nun she was known as Sister Mary Peter. Any help will be appreciated. -- Monica Mullikin Goose Creek, South Carolina
My ancestor William McElhenny died in Fannett tp. circa 1797. Evidence from a deed included below indicates that he resided in York County, PA, in 1791. The area where he likely resided is now Adams County, PA. I have been attempting to link William to other McElhenny/McIlhenny families. There appears to have been a migration from Southern Lancaster County to the area of Mt. Joy, Reading, and Straban townships, Adams County (then York), circa 1752. I have been compiling data; however, I don't have enough evidence to draw conclusions. From Lancaster County Deed L3-270, we can know that a Robert McElhenny and his brother William McElhenny resided--or at least owned property--in Drumore tp., Lancaster County. Immediately after each sold his part of the property, both names appear in Adams County, obtaining warrants for land. An Ezekiel McElhenny follows the same path with other land, although I can't determine whether there was one Ezekiel or two. The Robert McElhenny, resident of Straban tp., died testate in York County, leaving a son named William. There is only one William McElhenny found in tax records circa 1779 to 1783 and on the 1790 Federal Census in York/Adams County. That man certainly is my ancestor--but is he Robert's son or Robert's brother? Or someone else? Seeking assistance with men of these names. Below, I have included quite a bit of data I've culled to further the process. There is a separate McElhenny family in the Lancaster area (John McElhenny and his brother Alexander) whose descendants migrated to North Carolina. There is another John McElhenny of Chester County whose son William appears to have moved to North Carolina. If I have time, I will later post that information to the Lancaster group. NOTE: The data below excludes a Samuel McElhenny who appears linked with the names below. Samuel resided on property adjoining Ezekiel McElhenny in Mt. Joy tp. Previous researchers have suggested that Ezekiel, Samuel, William, and Robert might all be brothers. I see no reason to discount this belief; however, I have only direct evidence that William and Robert were brothers. I found a Milton C. Schue, b. ca 1871, and wife Elmira living in Lemoyne in 1910. They had been married 2 years. It was Milton's second marriage and they had no children. I found a couple of references in the 1910 Gettysburg Times of Milton and his wife visiting people in Adams County. I also found an obituary for Henry Shue of Hampton, who died 12 April 1914 at age 74. He left sons Warren and Milton Shue of Harrisburg (this may be an error as everything else says Milton lived in Lemoyne for many years), a couple of daughters and a brother, John, of West Manheim in York County. I found an obituary for Joseph F. Shank of Hampton, who died 15 September 1929. One of his survivors was Mrs. Milton Shue of Lemoyne. Hope this helps. Hello Thelma, I just found your post and wonder if any of your ancestors listed ever lived in Perry Co, PA? I have BAIR's in my line from there but have not traced them back to where they might have been prior to Perry Co. I wonder if we might have any connection? (paraphrased. The article is on Ancestry. -----In this article a Mr A.I. Deitrick tells the story of a purse made by his grandfather Joseph Deitrick, a shoemaker, in 1779. Joseph Deitrick died in 1831 and the purse passed to A.I.D.'s father. In 1850 when A.I. Deitrick's father died he inherited the purse. A.I. Deitrick states he was born in Gettsburg Adams county Pennsylvania. and came to Allen county Indiana in 1852.-------. I believe this is the Alfred Deitrick (w: Catharine) who along with John Deitrick ( W:Susan) and Samuel and Rebecca Deitrick came to Allen County Springfield twp Indiana to start a church in 1852. I believe Alfred Deitrick's father was a another John Deitrick . The three families lived in Mahoning county Ohio immediately before coming to Indiana. While I have additional information on the family of Alfred, I am hoping the purse article will help me find the parents of Samuel Deitrick and his wife Rebecca Kaufman. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with information on this family. Would also be willing to share any information I have.
