    1. Re: [PAADAMS] McElhenny/McIlhenny Family
    2. Dr. Neal O. Hively
    3. Hi Ed, Dr. Neal Hively writing. I research and publish original colonial land records for south-central PA. In the past twenty years I've researched and published all of York County (some 581,000 acres). I've now moved on to do Adams County. My volume 1 for Adams County shows a William McIlhenny in Mt. Joy township on the M-369 York warrant (most outside the Manor of Maske), Ezekiel McIlhenny close by on the M-5 York warrant - most of that tract patented to James McIlhenny, Samuel McIlhenny patented land also close by in Mt. Joy Township, (all of the above in the south-west section of Mt. Joy Township, just outside the Manor of Maske), Robert McIlhenny surveyed land warranted to John Steele (the S-351 Lancaster warrant) - and patented the same. I have produced a six township connected survey map which shows how ALL of the colonial surveys fit together in Germany, Union, Conewago, Mt. Joy, Mt. Pleasant and Straban Townships (outside the Manor of Maske). There is also an accompanying full source and summary index cross-keyed to the sequential survey numbering on the map. I'm now finishing the east and northeast seven townships of Adams County - hopefully by the end of the year, including Berwick, Oxford, Hamilton, Reading, Tyrone, Huntington and Latimore Townships - and more McIlhenny's. See my website: www.paland.us for more info and background. 1. [PAADAMS] Smith, William
    2. Marilyn. I too have been trying to sort out the various Smith families. it seems there were several in the early York County area, as early as 1735, and some perhaps earlier. I have the names of at least six men named William Smith, and do not know if they connect with either of our families. I do not think the William Smith on which I have the most information, re: his probate, is the same as your William Smith. "My" William Smith is married an Elizabeth, maiden name unknown. She is named in her husbands probate, as are their children, James, George, William and Eleanor. William the younger married either in PA, or somewhere on his journey to Kentucky, or Virginia. It is very possible he had a daughter named Mary {Polly}, but this is all the information I have on this William the second. William the first died in the late 1700's, in York County. Sorry, Judy Smith/Colorado -- People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character. Ralph Waldo Emerson

    3. I know that Smith is a common surname; however, I have a William Smith who purchased his land from William Penn in what is now Adams Co. His Will only names daughters. Daughter, Mary Smith, married Robert Wilson and daughter, Esther Smith, married Robert's brother Charles Wilson. Charles was captured by the British during the Revolution and spent the rest of the war on one of the British prison ships at a harbor in New York. Both Robert and Charles were with the Flying Camp regiment. Would like to know the name of William Smith's wife. I am hoping to locate a marriage record for the Lemoyne Milton or some other records of the Harrisburg Milton to try to differentiate between the possibility that there are two Miltons or 1 who was misidentified in his father's obituary. Author: RoyRuppert Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.adams/3171.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: >From the Adams county historical society: The Manor of Maske was one of the largest manors in Pennsylvania. In 1734, the Penns authorized a Lancaster County surveyor and public official to issue what were call licenses to persons wishing to take up land west of the Susquehanna River. Two licenses were issued on April 8, 1735, for a total of 600 acres of land among the branches of Marsh Creek. The land that now comprises the center of Adams County was purchased from the Iroquois Indians by the family of William Penn in 1736. The Indian claims were settled, the temporary boundary line between Pennsylvania and Maryland, was settled, and the settlers were being attracted to the area by means of regular warrants and surveys. The residents of the Marsh Creek Settlement (synonymous with the Manor of Maske) were all, or virtual all Scotch-Irish. These Scots had lived in Ireland for a century or more. They were convinced that the British government had mistreated them. Many were embittered and had begun coming to Pennsylvania and Delaware in the second decade of the eighteenth century. They provided the largest number of pioneer settlers in what are now Cumberland and Franklin Counties, Pennsylvania. In the 1740's, there were many more Scotch-Irish in what is now Adams County, than any other ethnic group. The pioneers in the Marsh Creek Settlement came in to the area in response to what they said was a governor's proclamation, calling for the settlements of unimproved lands west of the Susquehanna River. The Marsh Creek settlers became an integral and valued part of the society of York County, which was created in 1749. The Manor of Maske and the Marsh Creek Settlement was surveyed January 17, to January 30, 1766. One early settler, Samuel Gettys, established a tavern in 1761. By 1786 his son James had laid out a town of 210 lots with a central town square on the land surrounding the tavern. This town would become known as Gettysburg.
