    1. Re: [PAADAMS] Old Reformed and Lutheran Graveyard in Arendtsville
    2. The only connection I have is that my great great grandfather, James Henry Thompson, b. 1827 Littlestown, was married to one Mary (Ann? Jane?) Arendt.? She died when James was serving in the Civil War.? He went AWOL and came home to find someone to take care of his children.? He hired one Elizabeth Routson/Routsohn/Routzahn to do the job.? Her husband, Daniel Sell, had recently died leaving her and her children destitute. James eventually went back to the war, but served in a different unit.? The relationship between Elizabeth and James eventually became more than just employer/housekeeper after the war.? At that time they moved from Gettysburg to Gallitin Davies County, Indiana, where Elizxabeth became pregnant.? When he refused to believe that it was his baby, she left him and came to stay in Pittsburgh with her sister Margaret.? According to the cenuses, the baby girl, Gertrude, was b. 1870 either in MD or PA.? James eventually came back to Pittsburgh and took Elizabeth and the baby girl back to IN, and they eventually moved to Springhills, Chamnpaign County, OH.? On his deathbed James admitted that Gertrude actually was gus daughter. Charles' first administrator was John Arendt, who died in 1826. After John Arendt died, a 2nd administration team was formed. I have both sets of administrations. I also have William John Arendt's estate administration. * Peter Waggoner's (d. 1852) administration by James Russell has an accounting record that lists two interest payments of $15.60 and $7.80, respectively, to Mrs. Smith and a payment of $137.86 to Magdalena Smith. It also lists a Dr. J. N. Smith acct. for $7.50, but that is probably a doctor's fee. (I cannot find the online listing right now, but found in the past that a Dr. Joseph N. Smith was a coroner at one time, early on.) There are other names of interest in Charles Good's administration and in christening records. I am trying to figure out what, if any, is the relationship among them. I'd appreciate any input. Do you know how the Goods, Smiths, Arendts, and Hartmans are connected? 3. Jim, Here is a link you can reach from the Pennsylvania State Archives that I gave you and that shows Samuel Cobean's land in Franklin in 1819. You probably could use this information to order a copy of the land drecord if one still exists. http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/rg/di/r17-88WarrantRegisters/AdamsPages/ Adams4.pdf Lee Anne

I hope it helps. You can also find it with a google search on the words Pennsylvania State Archives land. Lee Anne

    3. Dear Dr. Hively: Is it possible to view the applicable data on Alexander, Samuel & William Cobean, on line ? I have been unsuccessful in doing so. My main interest would be for dates, etc, particularly the initial purchase date, and when they first arrived in the Adams County area. 3. Hi Lee Anne: There are many spelling variations for Cobean. However, I am primarily interested in descendents of the Alexander & Samuel (& Samuel Alexander) Cobean families, that are extensively referenced in Gettysburg, and Pennsylvania history. The Civil War Museum, was moved to the original farm of Samuel Alexander Cobean, in 1999. The father of the original Cobean family, was I believe, John Cobean. He may have had brothers, named Alexander, James, William, Thomas & Samuel. The major spelling variations are: Cobean, Cobane, Cobain, de Cobain, Cobaen, Cobine/Cobin/Cobene, Cabban/Cabbane, etc. It appears that those using the Cobean spelling variation, emigrated to Pennsylvania ca 1760, Ohio & Virginia ca 1790, and Ontario ca 1823. The Cobain variation emigrated to Australia ca 1850, and several remained in the Antrim area of Ireland, Galway of Scotland & Yorkshire, England. The Cobane variation remained in northern Tyrone, before emigrating to USA, and Canada, later in the 1800's. The Cobine strain, moved to Monaghan, Ireland before emigrating to the USA in the mid-late 1800's. All records in Ireland, indicate the family was almost totally located in the counties of Antrim, first, ca 1640, and then Tyrone ca 1710, having moved to Antrim ca 1640 in the Plantation of Ulster. 3. Hi List: I am researching the Cobean/Cobane/Cobain family of Antrim & Tyrone Ireland. I believe the family originated in Galway, Scotland, moved to Antrim, Ireland ca 1640, and to Tyrone, Ireland ca 1710. I believe the Alexander & Samuel Cobean family of early Gettysburg and Adams County , were sons of one of the Cobean brothers of Tyrone, or Antrim (possibly John). I would like to communicate with anyone who is researching this family in the mid-late 1700's to early 1800's. I believe the family emigrated to the Gettysburg area, ca 1760. I have extensive reasearch on this family in Ireland, Canada and Australia. I believe all Cobeans can be traced back to the John Cobean family that moved from Galway, Scotland, to Antrim, Ireland, in the Plantation of Ulster, ca 1640. Regards Jim White Naples, Florida

    1. Re: [PAADAMS] Old Reformed and Lutheran Graveyard in Arendtsville
    2. I too would like a copy/scan of that information. I have searched for info on this for my husband's lineage. He is descendant of Hartman, Arendt, Oyler, Bushey, Mickley, Stoops, Eicholtz, etc., and a good number of them would have been in that cemetery. I have documented/photographed most of the headstones in the Greenmount Cemetery in Arendtsville with but one small section to be completed this month when I am in that area but would love to have definative information on those in that graveyard mentioned. I was under the impression that they were moved but do not have that documented. I am interested in getting a copy (preferably a scan) of G. A. Gobrecht's transcribed list of tombstone inscriptions for the Old Reformed and Lutheran Graveyard that used to be in Arendtsville, but is now a bank parking lot. Where did the pile of broken headstones go when the cemetery was converted to a parking lot? Were any of the graves moved to a different location, or were they paved over? I found reference to a list of tombstone inscriptions taken down by a N. A. Gobrecht of Altoona, PA. - presumably done in about 1910. My question is .... Does anyone know where the complete transcript of Mr. Gobrecht's is now????
