Can anyone tell me where I might be able to locate the verdict for a criminal case that was heard in Adams County in 1880-- Com v Manock? I recently stumbled onto 'The York Legal Record, Volume I, 1881' on Google Books. which contains the December 1880 Quarterly Sessions. The first case is Q.S for Adams Co.; Com v Manock, a Criminal case with an indictment of adultery. The charge to the jury for this case is written in great detail but there is no verdict. Joseph Manock, the accused, was my great-grandfather so I am interested in finding the verdict of the case. However, I am really out of my depth as I don't know anything about any criminal system during this period and especially in the US, so I don't know where to begin the search. Can anyone suggest where I might be able to locate the verdict of this trial? Many thanks for any suggestions or assistance, Helen Beach Toronto, Canada
Dear Dr. Hively, I am a direct descendant of the Bleakney/Blakely/Blakeney/various spellings families in the areas mentioned, but have not found land records for them. Could you please check to see if the index has anything similar to the above spellings? They intermarried with the Moorhead families and the Fergus families. However, I think the Moorhead family were in Hamilton twp. Timeframe is quite early: possibly from 1730s to 1798 and then into early 1800s. Many of them moved on into Huntingdon, Indiana and Armstrong counties. Thanks for your time. Hello Dr. Hively, I'm sorry that I neglected to add the important information that my grandfather, who owned the land in Adams County was Grover Cleveland Thompson. My mother said that he owned it before she was born in 1925. So, I'm thinking that it had to be the 1910's or 1920's as my grandfather was born in 1884 in Pinchtown, Adams County. Thank you so much for the link. I will eagerly check it out. Happy New Year! Susan Alexander Llauget My family coat of arms ties at the back. Is that normal? I started checking in 1810 and followed through til 1825. In 1822 Jacob showed up as he should since he was then 21 yrs old. He was also single in 1824 and 25 taxes. Phillip had 170 Acres from 1810 until 2824 when he sold 17 A to Michael Geiselman. In Berwick Twp in 1800 Philip Senior had 170A til 1804 when he had 177 Acres from 04 -06. During this time (1800-1806) Philip Jr has 2 horses and 2 cows then in 1810 Philip has 177 Acres. Philip Sr died 5 Dec 1810. Philip Hartman's Adam's Co will W348 written in 1809 mentions only 2 Children: Philip and Catherine. Catherine's will of 1820 or 22 W921 for a single woman mentions her brother Philip who was also the executor. Philip who died 1810 was born Dec 15, 1725. I think now we have a good line, Josiah, Jacob, Jacob, Philip, Philip. Nancy Livingston born Dec 30 1805 is the daughter of George Livingston Born July 9, 1775 died Aug 5 1847 in Paradise Twp York County and his wife Maria(sometimes Polly) b May 16, 1786 died Nov 17, 1834. George first shows up in Paradise twp in the 1823 taxes with 173 Acres. I don't know where he was before that. Perhaps Adam Co. Twp taxes would show him in one of the Twps near East Berlin. George's York Co. Will T-109 mentions Children: Elizabeth ma. Andrew Hartman Nancy m. Jacob Hartman George Susan m. George W. Spangler Mary m. Michael Christ Christiana m. George Baker Leah m. Samuel Baughter Isaac All the children except Isaac are Maria's. George and Maria are buried in the Eaast Berlin Cemetery as Liebenstein. George married 2ndly Hannah perhaps Wagoner who had Isaac. Hannah died Oct 1, 1892 age 95. There are several George Livingstons which makes it confusing. The current best option for the parents of George b. 1775 are George b. circa 1730 died 1809 and wife Mary. Catherine Miller's marriage to Jacob Hartman in 1857 is listed in the Adams Co. Sentinel newspaper. It may say who her parents are. In 1850 the only Catherine Miller of the right age is living wit Elizabeth Miller 66. I don't know who Elizabeth is.
