Hi Vicki: The name of the book is "Samuel Cobean & Sons". It is not available publicly, or through the Library system. I could not locate 1 anywhere, via the ILL Program. It was written by a Cobean descendent in 1984. It is a fantastic summary of the Cobean family who came to Pennsylvania, ca 1760, and settled in the Marsh Creek area. Samuel's son Alexander, was the 1st President of the Gettysburg Bank, and a grand son had the farm, where the current Civil War Museum is located. My overall research on this family started in Ontario, where my grand mother was a Cobean. Research indicated this family came to Ontario, in 1823, from Tyrone, when they received a series of original land grants. Further research indicated they came from Skey Townland, near Augnacloy, in Tyrone. My research in Tyrone uncovered a Lease in 1748 to 4 (or possibly 5) Cobean brothers. Further research indicated that the Cobeans went to Tyrone from County Antrim, in Tyrone, ca 1710, and prior to that, from County Galway in Scotland, ca 1640, when they came to Antrim during the "Plantation of Ulster". I located 3 of the 4 Cobean families in Tyrone, and their descendents, who emigrated to Ontario & Australia. However, there was 1 family, that of John Cobean, that I could not locate in Tyrone. I now believe the reason was that John Cobean and his family, had emigrated to Pennsylvania, ca 1760, with his entire family, and thus no records are available of this family in Tyrone. Samuel Cobean, mentioned above, was the oldest of 4 known sons, who came to the USA. The others were John, William and Thomas. Mention of John and William has been located in some records in Pennsylvania. Thomas, and I believe the father John, has been located in North Carolina and then South Carolina. It is believed Thomas and his father John, left Pennsylvania, ca 1770, and headed south for new farm land. ----- Original Message ----- From: <vlhartman@mindspring.com> To: <paadams@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:14 AM Subject: Re: [PAADAMS] Original Cobean Family of Adams Cp Pa > Jim, > > What is the name of the book that you reference. Hi Leed Anne: Yes, I believe I have all the relevent Census records for my Cobean family. I also recently received a book that has virtually all the early records of the Cobeans in Pennsylvannia, + all the other states where the succeeding generations moved to. There is preobably 500 + entries for this family that originated in Adams Co. Hello Folks: The Perry Historians, a genealogical library located northeast of New Bloomfield, Perry Co., PA. on Rt.34 are going to be holding our annual Genealogical Workshop (a Beginners Workshop) at the Harry Lenig Library on Saturday, March 7, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Please note that this year we are breaking our workshops into two groups - as we have had many folks in the past who were just starting out and we could not concentrate on what you do when you begin family research and the sources available - we had to split the day devoting the secondhalf to those who had been doing research for a while. But on this day (March 7th) we will be holding our workshop for those who are beginning their family tree. Then on Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., we will be holding another Genealogical Workshop - this time an Advanced resource day for those who have been doing research for a while and may need assistance and suggestions on how to "break those walls down". All are welcome and it is FREE of charge. All we ask is that you let us know at least a week in advance that you may be attending - so that we have enough handouts available - by e-mailing: Donna@ThePerryHistorians.org For more information about our library - you can check out our website: www.ThePerryHistorians.org Look forward to seeing you there! Being single and in the tax record means they are at least 21.I believe that Your John is the son of either John or Jacob Smith in Huntington in 1826, A check of the 1820 census shows that only Jacob Smith has sons 19-26. John died in 1853 at age 51 he would be born 1801, 1802. John doesn't have any over 15, It appears to me that Jacob Smith of Huntington is your most likely candidate to be John's father. How do you know that Thomas D. was born in York Springs? Catherine the wife of John A died 13 June 1915 age 79. The goal now is to find a will, orphan's court record or deed that has John and Jacob on it. Have you investigated John or Jacob as John's father? Jacob Miller died March 20, 1832 age 80. He had no will so the estate went to the Orphan's court. There are 9 Orphan court records concerning Jacob's estate. In several Samuel is listed as the son of Jacob. Also in 1833 taxes for Hamilton Twp Samuel has 108A of land where he had none before and in the taxes it says they are transferred from Jacob Miller. Jacob's other children in 1832-33 are Peter, Jacob, Michael, Margaret and Lydia. In 1834 and 35 Samuel is listed as a potter with 107 acres. Samuel was born July 21, 1796 according to the Abbottstown Reformed church record to Jacob and Eva, and Michael was born before 27 Oct 1799 when he was baptized in the same church. I don't know if Eva is a 2nd wife or not. Jacob was a widower in the 1820 census. Jacob has 200A in Berwick Twp in 1799 and 333A in Hamilton Twp in 1817 and 1818 and Samuel shows up as single first 1818 in Hamilton meaning he's 21 years old which fits with his 1796 birth. Mrs. Elizabeth Hartman, widow of the late Jacob Hartman, died at her home in Hamilton township, at 1 o'clock Saturday morning after an illness of several years from a complication of diseases. Death was probably hastened by a fall which she reieved last Sunday, resulting in the breaking of her lower limb. Her age was 74 years 1 month and 29 days. She was a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs Samuel Miller of Adams county. Her husband died about six years ago. She leaves three children, Wilson Hartman at home; Josiah Hartman of Dillsburg; and J. R.
