Author: camplese Surnames: MORTORFF, MUNDORFF and spelling variations Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.adams/1713.15.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: They appear to be two different people. The 1860 Federal Census lists Moses Mortorff, 47, Huntington Twp, Adams Co, PA, as a farm laborer with a wife, Elizabeth, 46, three sons, and two daughters, ages 2 to 17, all Pennsylvania born. The same federal census lists Moses Mortorff, 48, of Steuben Twp, Steuben Co, IN. He was a cooper with a wife, Elizabeth, 47, five sons, ages 5 to 22, and one daughter, age 15. Moses, his wife, and the first four children were born in Pennsylvania. The last two children, ages 7 and 5, were born in Indiana. I suspect that Indiana Moses is related to the Adams Co, PA Moses Mortorff, probably first cousins. The 1860 federal census also list Jacob Mortorff, age 50, farmer, with a wife and children in DeKalb Co, Indiana. This Jacob is also Pennsylvania born, as is one of his children. His wife was born in Ohio and his other six children were born in Indiana. The earliest appearance of the Mortorff surname that I have been able to find is Conrad Mortorff who appeared in Huntington Twp, Adams Co, prior to 1810. I have long suspected that Conrad is actually part of the Mundorff family of Huntington Twp. The Mundorff surname appeared first in Lancaster County prior to 1742 and was carried to Adams County by Johannes Mundorff in the late 18th century. I have seen many spelling variations for the Mundorff surname, including Mortorff. I have been unable to find any Mortorff families prior to Conrad's first appearance in the federal census, and they do not appear outside of this part of Pennsylvania prior to 1800. However, there are claims that Conrad Mortorff is a misspelling for Mardorf and Conrad was a Hessian soldier who remained in PA after the Revolution. I hope this information is of some help to you.
