    3. Thanks Myrna for the nice Snail package. Really stretched me out! It contains several items that I did not have. I have some comments and questions - As you know, my primary goal is to connect my YOUNGs of Adams Co, PA and Frederick Co, MD into the SPONSELLER/YOUNGs of Adams Co, PA. My data indicates- George SPONSELLER, Andrew SHRIBER and Peter, Wm, John, Joseph & David YOUNGs were adjoining landowners/Church members near Littlestown, Germany Twp in the 1740-1800 era as were my DOTTERERs - Conrad, Geo, Michael; and my George & Felty CLEMMER families. John YOUNG ?-d bef 1706 of Frankelbach, Ger m 14 Aug 1698 Anna Margareta HESS bapt 1674 had 2 ch [1 being David]. John's widow Anna Margareta m Andreas SCHREIBER 1706 Germany? How abt the YOUNGs of 1700s York co, PA? One of the articles states that Rev Stoever bapt ch of David YOUNG 1735-41. Would you know where I could find those records? The 1778 will of Geo SPONSELIER was wit by a Peter YOUNG and translated by Wm. SLAGLE. Know either of them?? You enclosed the handwritten 5 Nov 1821 will of a George SPONSELLER [wf Margaret] of Adams Co, PA. Where does he fit in?? One was the Annual Assessor's Duplicates and the other was the Triennial Rate Books. You may also luck out and find Pauper Children listed in these early Tax Lists. Happy Hunting! 3. No one else seems to have a more definitive answer to this question, so I'll put in my two cents. I don't know at what age Adams County men began to be taxed, but I can say that among the half dozen or so Adams County families I've researched in early 1800s tax records, I've never come across a record for anyone younger than about 22 or 23. Most people I've researched first appeared in tax rolls either when they married or when they were in their early to mid-20s. This suggests that men began to be taxed only when they established a household separate from that of their parents, or as soon as they acquired taxable property or began a taxable occupation independent of their parents. There was likely a statutory minimum age for such taxation (probably in the 18-21 year range), but in practice, few men seem to have left their parents' household before their early 20s. While this hypothesis seems plausible to me, I have to stress that it's only my best guess based on limite! d evidence. I'd be interested to know what the tax laws actually said. -Richard Carlson -----Original Message----- From: paadams-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:paadams-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Craig Paxton Sent: Monday, May 25, 2009 12:59 PM To: paadams@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAADAMS] Adams County Occupational Tax Processing I have found a lot of great occupational tax information on my family, but I'm interested to see if anyone can tell me at what age these taxes might have started being billed. 3. Dot, Did you mean Jacob A Warner moved to Cedar Co, IA (Iowa) instead of PA? If so, I did see the story about him, coming to Cedar Co in 1855, and marrying the widow Denson (Mary J Riddel) on Jan 29, 1857. I saw that he declared both parents were born in Pennsylvania, so that may rule out some Warner (or like spelling) in Adams Co. >From The History of Cedar County Iowa & a few census records: Jacob A, b Nov 8, 1828, Adams Co., PA in Franklin Twp., Adams Co. PA in 1850 census (as Jacob A Werner) as a boarder & miller in the home of Frederick & Catherine STOVER, he also a miller. to Lancaster Co., PA cir 1851 to Stark Co., OH cir 1853 to Center Twp, Cedar Co, IA in 1860 census to Fairfield Twp, Cedar Co, IA in 1870 census (as JA Warner) in Fairfield Twp, Cedar Co, IA in 1880 & widowed in 1900 Father of Emma M, Henry J, and Clara J. Jacob died March 8, 1903 and is buried in Clarence Cemetery, Dayton, Cedar Co., IA. I haven't found a Warner family in the 1830 census with a male <5yrs in Adams Co. Will check once again and will look in 1840 for 'suspect' parents of Jacob A. I will report back. Please note Dot, I added this info on Jacob in case the extra info sparks an idea with the others on this list. Through all census records I found, Jacob used the letter A in his name (Jacob A or J A) I wonder if he was distinguishing himself from another Jacob Warner, b Adams Co., PA. 2. Hi: This is what I found on him. Warner, Jacob A., farmer, Section 12; Post Office Clarence; was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania, November 8, 1828; he lived there until about 23 years of age, and then went to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he remained about two years, and then went to Stark County, Ohio, and remained there about two years, then came to this county, in 1855; owns 400 acres. He married Mary J., widow of Joseph D. Denson, January 29, 1857, a native of Pendleton County, Kentucky; her maiden name was Riddel; she came to this county in 1839; she drove a team of horses across the Wapsipinicon River, the water being so high she had to swim them, and landed on the opposite shore all right. They have one son and two daughters--Emma M., Henry J. and Clara J. Mrs. W. has one son and three daughters--Annie C., Maggie E., Sarah F. and Zachariah, by her former marriage. 3. I have found a lot of great occupational tax information on my family, but I'm interested to see if anyone can tell me at what age these taxes might have started being billed. Age 21, 20, or 19? The first one that I was able to find so far is age 23 for my gg-grandfather in Adams County. Any help with this answer will be greatly appreciated.
