Good Afternoon Fellow Listers: Here's a good site to find out what happened on a specific date in time. http://dmarie.com/timecap/ Best Wishes... Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA.
Hello Jill, You will probably find everything you need at the Adams County Historical Society. Their web site will give you info. about hours, location, etc. http://www.achs-pa.org You might like to also check out the Adams Co. Pa. GenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~paadams/adams.htm For St. Ignatius Church and Buchanan Valley-- I'm going there tomorrow with flowers for the cemetery. I love that church and it's location. I tried writing a letter to the church a year ago requesting info. on a greatgrandfather. I never got an answer. There is a book at the ACHS with records of births, marriages and deaths. You will need to ask for it. If you are interested in a little bit of background on Buchanan Valley try http://www.genealogy.com/users/m/c/c/Erin-Mccleafbolling/FILE/0004page.html Erin has posted some notes from her grandfather. Good luck and have a wonderful trip. If you have any trouble getting into these websites, e-mail me direct and I'll send you the info. Helen
Hello all researchers. At Mother Cumberland, Reunion 2003, we will be having a MESSAGE BOARD. Anyone is welcome to submit a message to be posted on the message board. We have set aside one entire wall to post these messages from researchers whose ancestors were in Cumberland County, PA or any of the counties who trace their parentage to Cumberland County (over 20 counties were formed from the land that was once either part of Cumberland County or near Cumberland County, PA.) We will post these in the registration area so they will hopefully be seen by most who attend the reunion. This is something different than the Surname Registry, which will be a printed book. If you want to submit a message for the board, please ...... 1. Limit your message about your early Pennsylvania ancestor to one page for each surname or family. 2. Please put either your name and address or e-mail address on the top of the page along with the surname(s)-of-interest. (People will want to know how to reach you.) 3. Please put the surname(s) in bold print or highlight them so that others can easily see which messages pertain to their families. 4. It is fine to submit a family group sheet, pedigree chart, copies of photos, or whatever you think will enable others to "find" you as a "new" cousin. (Please DO NOT submit any originals.) 5. No Message Board entries will be returned to their submitters. They will be donated to the Cumberland County Historical Society following the reunion. 6. There is no cost to submit entries for the Message Board. This is a free service the reunion committee is offering to help as many as possible to find clues to their loved ones who walked this way so long ago. 7. Submissions for the Message Board must be received at the address below by July 1, 2003. 8. Please mail your Message Board entry to: Donna Cuillard Reunion 2003-Message Board 6497 Dowel Dr. #1 Simi Valley, CA 93063
I am planning a genealogical research trip to Adams County in June and am wondering if there is an Adams County Historical Library that I might visit. I was in Adams County several years ago, and seem to recall that there was a facility in Gettysburg that was only open on Monday and Wednesday, and so I was not able to inquire further. I found a web page with an e-mail address for the ACHS, but it bounced back to me. If such a facility exists, where is it located, and what hours is it open? Or, if someone could give me a phone number or email address I would love to contact them myself. I am specifically interested in any records relating to St. Ignatius Church and the surrounding area of Buchanon Valley, Orrtanna, Adams County, PA (land, wills, vital rec?). Any other suggestions for where I might go to research would be greatly appreciated (I visited the church 2 years ago, and was turned away). Thank you for your help. I have found ones in my family that the daughters were cut out because they shamed the family (so to speak). My great grandmother was cut from her fathers will because she married outside her religion (United Brethren to Lutheran) and just happened to be very pregnant at the time of her marriage. I have also seen ones that everything was left to the eldest son and no other child was given a portion. Amy

Will was written before children were born and not updated. 2. Children were not so nice to the parents. (I've actually read one in my own family were the mother gave reasons why she cut them out!) 3. The parents weren't so nice or played favorites. 4. Children died before Probate. (happens a lot in that era) 5. Children not mentioned were given their share of goodies before the Will was written, hence excluded. (also happened a lot - but not sound legally - should at least mention the children so no one is "mistakenly" left out of an inheritance) Not knowing any more particulars of the above Will, my guess would be #4. Many times, as the children married and moved out of the area, they would be given their "share" at that time. Because of the distance in traveling, visits would be rare if at all. Also, look at when the will was written and how long before it was probated. If there is a long span, there may have been other children after he wrote the will. This is why I prefer Chancery and Equity court records (in some places they may be called Orphan's Court or other named records) which are usually brought about because of the lack of a will or a dispute in settlement or need of a clear title. In these, testimony must be given on all heirs including those deceased; and will list the deceased heirs' children many times and also gives locations of where the heirs are currently living and lists the property. So, if these are found, they are quite a treasure and better than a will. Note - If a child is listed in a will and it's notated he already received his share, this could be a clue he had moved out of the area. Also, if items such as a bed, featherdown, spinning wheel, etc are left to a daughter (wills sometimes only list the first name of the child), the chances are she is not yet married and this is her "dowry". Reading old documents can be very enlightening. - Dorinda Shepley [email protected] <A HREF="http://members.aol.com/midmdroots/frederick/">Early Frederick Co, Maryland</A> http://members.aol.com/midmdroots/frederick/
I have a copy of an old will dated August 1804. In it 4 of the children are named. According to other records there were several other children. Does this mean that they are dead or can there be other reasons for 'cutting them out'? Neil

Glynice, The Lower Bermudian Cemetery is on the grounds of the Lower Bermudian Church, which is the oldest Lutheran Church in Adams County, PA (according to the sign they have out front). This is a tiny church, but it is still in operation, holding regular services. I don't know who puts the flags on the graves. I think it is likely some veteran organization, but I'm not sure. I'm sure you could contact the church. There has not been anyone there when I visited, and I have not gotten around to contacting them yet, but it shouldn't be too difficult. The church is located on Lake Mead Road in Adams County. I'm not sure what the city would be, but you could probably get a number by calling information. I have a few pictures of the church, if you're interested. Hello Fellow Listers: This just came through the [email protected] list. This may help to explain why some of our ancestors birth, death or marriages were not recorded "properly" in the county court houses! Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumb. Co., PA. ******************************************** Altoona Mirror, 1891 [Blair Co., PA. newspaper] Come to Time, Gentleman There is a just complaint on part of the Secretary of the Board of Health that the physicians of the city, or rather some of them, are derelict in the duty of making returns of births, deaths, etc., thus hindering the work of the Board and detaining the work of making up the yearly report. Some of the ministers are also slow about making returns of marriages performed by them, and others give just what information they have to, and that with bad grace. This state of affairs should not exist. These records are required by law to be kept, they are of value, and no one of the standing of a physician or minister in the community should throw any impediment in the way of their proper keeping. ------------------------------ Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair
