    3. I am seeking any information at all on Eli Sponseller and Sarah J. Davenport. I believe they were in Adams County. They had a son, Curtis J. Sponseller, who was born 17 August 1924 in York, but I cannot find this family in York County. Curtis died this past September in Aspers, Menallen Township, Adams County. Curtis is buried at Mount Rose Cemetery. I would appreciate any information on Eli and Sarah, including birth/death, marriage date, other children and where buried. 3. Hello Fellow Listers: I just tried to search the archives/obituaries at the Gettysburg Times and the Carlisle Sentinel websites and they would only search the within the last week. Have these newspapers changed their search services or is there somewhere else to look for past obituaries. I do know that I have done a search before for a person's obituary and it was several years back and it was searchable and I found it. Thanks for any help! 3. Hello Betty, Here is another idea for you about getting information on folks buried in Evergreen Cemetery. As Peggy said, it is a large cemetery, and there is no published list of the folks buried there. You can e-mail them and ask if a particular person is buried there, but even if you know the burial section you still have to know where it is located. You can either stop at the cemetery office for help, or maybe do as I did for one of my relatives.--Write a letter to the cemetery office at 799 Baltimore St., Gettysburg, Pa., 17325, enclosing a large SASE. Give them the name of the person/persons you're hunting and ask them to send you a cemetery map with the burial location marked on it. It worked for me. Almost everyone from both sides of my Mother's family is buried there. It's a lovely cemetery. Their website is http://www.evergreencemetery.org Good luck---- Helen "Peggy K. 1. [PAADAMS] Recollections of Lincoln at Gettysburg
    2. Sarah A. Cook (1844-1937, mother of Albert Cook Myers) and her older sister Elmira Jane Cook (1839-1914) traveled from their mill on Opossum Creek, north of Bendersville "in an open spring wagon" about eleven miles to Gettysburg on Nov. 19, 1863, where they heard Pres. Lincoln. http://showcase.netins.net/web/creative/lincoln/news/recollect.htm Arthur Weaner, a local historian from Gettysburg, sent me a list of the people who rode in the wagon that day. The wagon originated from Conrad Weaner's farm. 1. George Weaner, driver and his friend, 2. Louisa Rice, who he afterward married 3. Cornelius Weaner 4. Elizabeth Weaner 5. Miss Susan Weaner 6. Hannah Weigle, and her friend, 7. Jacob C. Smith, whom she afterward married 8. Lewis C. Smith, brother of Jacob. 9. Miss Sallie A. Cook, later Mrs. John T. Myers, & Mother of the late Albert Cook Myers 10. Miss Cook's sister, Elmira Jane Cook, later Mrs. Charles D. Cook. Arthur Weaner went on to say: A newspaper clipping in the possession of the author published February 1928, perhaps in the Philadelphia Public Ledger, gives the above in detail by Mrs. John T. Myers. Mrs. Myers states her father, Jesse Cook, was a prominent Quaker in the community and was a station master on the Underground Railroad, and among the hills surrounding their home scores of escaped slaves were living, befriended by her family. Her brother George was a prisoner in Libby Prison. "At the last minute something came up, couldn' get to town, but some neighbors drove us in, in an open spring wagon with two good horses, and there were 9 young people in the party." She states the Cook family were cousins of Judge Wills, and on the occasion visited the Wills House and shook hands with President Lincoln there. Anyone have the article mentioned from 1928? Bob Cooke

    3. Betty, the Evergreen Cemetery is immediately adjacent to the National Cemetery the President Lincoln dedicated at Gettysburg. An iron fence separates the two because the Evergreen cemetery predates the National Cemetery. The Evergreen Cemetery is rather large. I believe it started in the 1850's, but there are many graves in there that were moved to the Evergreen Cemetery from other locations, so just because someone died before the 1850s doesn't mean they aren't there. My great-uncle is buried there. 1. [PAADAMS] MYERS
    2. After many hours of research at the ACHS and online, I've reached a dead end on trying to link my g-g-grandmother, nee Lydia Ann Myers, to a specific Myers family in Adams County. Lydia Ann was born ABT October 6, 1829, and died ABT January 12, 1864. She was married to Andrew Cluck on February 25, 1847, by E.V. Gerhart, I believe at the Arendtsville Lutheran/Reformed church. Lydia Ann was apparently living in Franklin or Menallen Twp. at the time of her marriage to Andrew. I did find another Lydia Ann in Adams County, but the dates and marriage do not work for my Lydia Ann. Any assistance in linking Lydia to a specific Myers family line would be greatly appreciated. Hi Curt: I am not sure if you can help me but I wondered if there were any cemeteries in Tyrone Twp.? I am researching the family of Jesse Wright who lived there in the 1800's and is related to the Wright's in Menallen Twp. specifically, I am looking for a death date and burial site. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. George Wright Vero Beach, FL George Wright [email protected] Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

    1. [PAADAMS] List manager?
    2. jbnimble
    3. Will the manager of the Adams County list please contact me? I get two copies of each post. Since I changed ISP providers the old provider is forwarding messages sent to that old email address. Some time ago I resubscribed in order to be able to post from my present email address. Some weeks ago I contacted the person I thought was the list manager about this problem, but two copies of each message continue to arrive. Thanks, Richard Weber > ==== PAADAMS Mailing List ==== > Adams Co. PA GenWeb URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~paadams/adams.htm >>

    3. Hi Gordon, This is from the 1886 History of Adams Co Pa p 404, Cumberland Twp. Lots of info here. Jane Washington W. Witherow, miller and farmer, P.O. Green Mount, born near Fairfield, Adams Co., Penn., Feb 22, 1833, is a son of David & Nancy (Walker) Witherow, natives of Pennsylvania, and of Scotch-Irish descent. His father was a mill-wright by ttrade, and in early life pursued that occupation, but later followed farming. He died when our subject was 14 years old. He had 6 children, all of whom grew to maturity, Washington W. being the fifth. Our subject was reared on the farm, attended the common schools of Fairfield, and worked at both farming and milling until 1865 when he bought the mill and property and has since carried on the business himself. In purchasing this mill, he bought out the heirs, and settled a matter that had been in litigation for upward of forty years. In the mill are 2 sets of buhrs, one for grinding chop feed, and another for making flour; and attached to it is a small mill. In connection with the milling business, Mr. Witherow is engaged in farming. In 1863 he enlisted in Company B, a regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served as a non-commissioned officer until he was honorably discharged in 1864. In 1861 Mr. Witherow was married to Mary Crooks, of Scotch-Irish origin, daughter of Rev. Robert Crooks of the Methodist-Eposcopal Church, and to them were born seven children: Margaret Danner; Joseph Stewart, who is a miller and superintends the mill; Emmett Williams (deceased); Robert Crooks, a farmer; David Walker, Emma Elizabeth, Mary Louisa (deceased). The family is identified with the Presbyterian Church. ----- Original Message ----- From: "gordon crooks" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2003 6:39 AM Subject: [PAADAMS] Witherow - Crooks familes > Looking for decentants of Washington Witherow who married Mary Crooks in 1861 and propably lived in Fairfield area of Adams County > > Gordon Crooks > > > ==== PAADAMS Mailing List ==== > Adams Co.
