    1. [PAADAMS] Searching for early marriage date and place - brick wall
    2. JUDITH SMITH
    3. Would someone have a record of early marriages in York County, PA? I am searching for the marriage of Mary Hutton and Hugh Smith. Mary Hutton, daughter of James Hatton/Hutton and his wife Sarah {Wilson?} of York County. This Hatton/Hutton family lived in York County until after the death of Edward Hatton {abt 1778/1780}, father of James; then they migrated to Virginia. I have James Hatton/Hutton in the Washington County, VA Tax list of 1782 and 1783. Mary Hatton/Hutton may have been born abt 1762 in PA and Hugh Smith in December of 1757, place unknown. Parents of Hugh Smith, unknown, also any previous location before Washington County, VA. I have been searching for this marriage for quite some time, the marriage does not seem to have taken place in Washington County, Virginia, or perhaps even Virginia, or no record has so far, been found. Thank You for any help and consideration. Judy Smith/Colorado "Koyansquati"

    1. [PAADAMS] D.A.R. Headquarters in Washington DC
    2. Donna Heller Zinn
    3. Hello Fellow Listers: The Juniata Co. Historical Society is once again taking their semi-annual bus trip to Washington DC on Wednesday, April 21st. My question: Is the D.A.R. Headquarters/Library open to the public on that date? I've been to their site and it only stated that they will be closed for 2 weeks in June/July for their annual conferences... but I recall that they are generally closed when the JCHS takes their trip to the Archives in the Spring. Does anyone on the list know of the updated schedule for DAR Library use??? Thanks in advance! Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA.

    1. [PAADAMS] Attn: Donna Heller Zinn - in re: Elizabeth Slentz Zinn
    2. GreenEyes
    3. Hi Donna, Please forgive the broadcast method here, but I'm new at these lists. Are you perchance related to or have any information regarding Elizabeth Slentz Zinn, or more particularly, her father, Nicholas Slentz? Elizabeth Zinn was the wife of John R Zinn, and lived in McSherrystown, PA. She died in May 1914. (This info from the Adams County News - Gettysburg - May 16, 1914 edition as obtained from Ancestry.com). Elizabeth was identified as the daughter of Nicholas Slentz. I am trying to see if I can find a link between my own great-great-great grandfather, Joseph Slentz, also of McSherrytown, and the said Nicholas Slentz. Joseph lived in Adams County all of his life, from what I can gather. He was born sometime in 1816 and died sometime prior to October 1892. Nicholas Slentz was also a long-time resident of Adams County. I believe Joseph may have been his son, although I have never been able to establish it, or anything remotely resembling it either, for that matter. Any information you may have on Nicholas and his family would be greatly appreciated. Bill Margerum Kirkland, WA 02/11/2004

    1. [PAADAMS] Adams in Chelmsford, MA
    2. Ray Leigh
    3. My wife found this info and thought we would pass it on. Hope it helps someone. Adams in Chelmsford, MA SOURCE: Footprints of the Patriots BESIDE OLD HEARTH-STONES ABRAM ENGLISH BROWN Boston, Lee and Shepard Publishers, 1897 Page 289 The Adams family early made a record in Chelmsford; and many of that name to-day revert to the mother town as the place of their origin, while the patriotic deeds of their ancestors for two centuries are an inspiration to them. "The family of Adam or Adams (meaning red; adamah, red earth) can claim the distinction of having the oldest individual name on record." -- Adams Genealogy. Two sons of Henry Adams, the immigrant leader who settled in Braintree, were among the founders of Chelmsford. Thomas, born in 1612, was well established with a large family when he was received as a member of the Chelmsford Church, "27th of 2d '56." Samuel, born 1617, was the father of a family when he appears as town clerk of Chelmsford. They did a grand work here during the remainder of their lives. The former died in 1666, and the latter in 1676. Page 290 Samuel Adams was the first miller of the town. On July 3, 1656, he was granted four hundred acres of land to encourage him to set up a sawmill, and later he had one hundred acres more for erecting a corn-mill. These mills marked a new era in the building of houses, as well as the preparation of grains for food. It was on a commanding site just beyond the brook that the miller erected his dwelling. Seven generations occupied the farm, and presided at the mill; but it has now passed into other hands, as have homesteads of other branches of the family. It is apparent that the Adams family of Chelmsford was connected with Samuel Adams the patriot, and it is interesting that the two branches should have been so positive in espousing the cause of the patriots in the Revolution. Pelatiah Adams from this town, who died in the service of his country at Cherry Valley, is remembered by the monument on the Common in his native town; while Samuel, the leader in the Revolution, sleeps in! Granary Burying-Ground in Boston, with no slab to remind the passing stranger of the brave patriot. The Adams Library at Chelmsford is a fitting memorial of not only the donor, but of all the descendants of the early settlers at Chelmsford by the name of Adams.
