Marilyn - My maternal WILSON line is rooted in the York / Adams County area. Here is what I have re my "brick wall" in that line: Jesper WILSON (b. 1690) and his sons, Lowes, John (Sr.)(b. 1722) and James (b. 1725). I descend from James and his wife, Abigail (BLACKBURN) WILSON. Jesper operated a mill and a tavern . Jesper, along with sons John Sr. and James were vestrymen and wardens in the Huntingdon Church of SPG (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Lands (London based). The Huntingdon Church (not to be confused with Huntingdon County) is located in what is now York Springs, Adams County, PA. Jesper's wife is Ann (LNU) WILSON. Jesper died in 1770. Jesper's father is said to have been named John (no proof to-date). I have been told this branch of WILSONs is linked to the WILSONs in Chester County, PA and the state of Delaware during the build-up to and during the Revolutionary War. For another "grip" on this family, Abigail (b. 1727 in Ireland) is a daughter of John BLACKBURN, Sr., a well known Quaker personality in the area. John was a leader in the Warrington Meeting (York County) as well as the Menallen Meeting (Adams County)...he owned 175 acres off of Possum Creek in and around Menallen Township. Obviously, there was a conflict of religions between James (SPG) and Abigail (Quaker). They were married in 1748 in a Quaker ceremony....but perhaps, "just to make sure", they were married "out" a couple of years later. When Abigail's father and the Society of Friends found out about this "side marriage", Abigail was the focus of a "throwing out" proceeding. Like her brother, John BLACKBURN, Jr. who was thrown out for fighting Indians and again for trying to recruit Quakers to fight the British, Abigail was thrown out of the Society of Friends in the 4th month of 1750 (July). The WILSON and BLACKBURN families of these counties have all the makings of a great book and / or movie!! James and Abigail remained in the area for a number of years, living in Tyrone Township. Seven of their ten children were born there. Their 5 sons are named: James (b. 1752), John (b. 1763), Michael (b. 1765), Jasper (b. 1767...my direct...a twin of Rebecca) and Samuel (b. 1769). Jasper, Rebecca and Samuel were born in Guilford County, NC...a good place to hang out during the build up to the Revolutionary War if you were a Quaker or, most certainly, a follower of the SPG!!! When James died in 1782, Abigail did return to the Quaker faith in Guilford County. Hopefully, those given names might provide some clues. I only know of the descendants of 3 of James and Abigail's children (Jasper, John and Elizabeth (KERSEY) WILSON (b. 1761). All 3 of these lines can be studied on the internet. In addition, the BLACKBURN family website is one of the largest around. All can be found on a simple "google" search. I am sure at least a few layers of bricks in this brick wall are related to the WILSON religious affiliation with the SPG at that time in our nation's history (opinion). No records of this line heading up to Canada have been found (i.e., Tory leanings). This family just kept it's collective mouth shut and blended in...a great place to blend in was living anywhere the Quakers lived. Unfortunately, this blending in did not make it easy to study their families and their ancestors. Hope this helps! - Tom Wilson Boca Raton, Florida -----Original Message----- From: Marilyn Prinzing [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2005 12:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [PAADAMS] Wilson and Wemyss/Weems Anyone on the list researching Wilson and/or Wemyss/Weems? The FamilyHart database was updated the day before Christmas adding another 9,000 new names online at the url found below. The total in the online database is now over 406,000 names. The majority of the information is for Pennsylvania Dutch families from Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina and points going west. _http://midatlantic.rootsweb.com/familyhart/_ (http://midatlantic.rootsweb.com/familyhart/) Much of the information is unverified information from other researchers. As we are able, we do try to "verify" information with census, church and other records. Each record has notes as to the source of the information. If you have additions and/or corrections, please feel free to send us an email. Please be advised that all names added are related by blood or marriage to our family. Also, dates and places for living individuals is withheld for those born after 1925. > < Thanks! Hello Fello Listers: My dad, Arthur HELLER had in his possession a picture of the Bendersville Baseball Team - appears to be about 1920-30's. My dad was from the Bendersville area - born and raised. None of the players are identified and there is no reference as to what year the photo was taken. I have scanned this picture - but it is a large picture and I had to lay it sideways on my scanner. If you are interested in seeing the picture or can provide some information on the Bendersville Baseball Team - please contact me. Thanks in advance! And..... Merry Christmas to you and yours and have a Happy New Year! Donna Heller Zinn of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA.
Marc, The church is now part of the United Church of Christ. Address is 131 Christ Church Rd., Littlestown, PA 17340. The Adams County Historical Society has quite a bit of information about the church and cemetery. For information on resources and research services, see www.achs-pa.org . Bob
Marc, Not all the info you asked for (actually not any of the info you asked for), but here are where the records are located. I imagine any of the Hist Soc would help with the address of the church & cemetery. Jane From Adams Co Church Records of the 18th century: Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church (Conewago), Germany Township, near Littlestown, records dating from 1745. It was located in the Conewago settlement, from which it took its name for many years. The first church was probably not built until the later 1750's. Records: 1747-1871. Transcribed by William J Hinke. Location of copies of records: Reformed Hist. Soc., Micro # 133; Adams Hist Soc., # L5; York Hist. Soc., # RR2; Hist. Soc. of Pa. Can anyone on the list tell me what relationship Peter Waggoner was to the John Smith (d. 1849 Loyalhanna, Westmoreland county, PA) family in 1849? I'm also interested in how Barbara Young fit into this family. Peter lived in Adams Co. PA at the time his name was mentioned in John Smith's 1849 Loyalhanna, Westmoreland Co., PA will. Among the things John bequeathed his wife Catherine was "...and all the Money in the Hands of Peter Waggoner of Adams County comeing from her Fathers Estate." I understand that Catherine's (Katy's) maiden name was Gooden, but I do not know who her parents were. Items were bequeathed by John Smith as follows: Item 1: general will statement about paying his debts and burial expenses Item 2: ... to Catherine, my wife (several items were listed) Item 3: one dollar to Elizabeth Funk, my daughter Item 4: one dollar to Ann Becham/Zecham, my daughter Item 5: "I give and bequeath unto the lawfull Heirs of John Smith (Decsd) one dollar" (This is an interesting item) Item 6: one dollar to Jacob Smith, my son Item 7: one dollar to Catharine Litle, my daughter Item 8: one dollar to Barbara Young, no relationship stated Item 9: ... to Benjamin Smith, my son (several items were listed; Benjamin was named executor) The will was witnessed by Issac Hughes and Jacob Smel/Smil [Smith?] Sir John's name appears to have been signed in old German script or maybe a hybridized version of old German and English script. Lee Anne
I'm trying to find out the relationship Peter Waggoner had to my ggg-grandmother/ggg-grandparents. I am also trying to find a will for Catherine/Katherine Gooden's father. My ggg-grandparents were John and Catherine Smith. John's 11 June 1849 will leaves several items to Catherine, including "...and all the Money in the Hands of Peter Waggoner of Adams County comeing from her Fathers Estate". Our family history from different sources has Catherine's (Katy) maiden name as Gooden. (I've also seen Goodwin.) Lee Anne
