    3. Nancy, I forgot to mention that Rinchart (I'm wondering now if this was supposed to be Rinhart-I was going by the index) and Mary Witzel were in Manheim Twnship in York. Mary was 28 in 1870. Is this your Mary or did you say she was a housekeeper in the home of the man you mentioned? There's a map on Pennsylvania Gen Web which shows where all the counties are, but for some reason I could not get onto that website just now. Let me know if I can look up anything else for you. 2. I'm very much interested in this information also, although my trip will be in August. Where are records kept for that part of York Co. that is now Adams Co? It was York Co. when my ancestors lived there. James McMaster came to York Co. from Lancaster Co. in the early 1740's, and died in the early 1790's. 3. Nancy, In 1870 York Co. I find the following WITZELS: Rinchart, Mary, Sarah and Cathrine (she was either living alone or residing in the house of Henry Schriner). Rinchart and Mary were married and were both born in Germany. In 1860 I find Nancy, David and Rebecca. There's a Mary A. Witzel (age 30) in Northumberland County. If you look for the name Witzel in the index there were quite a few with that name. So it would seem that you have the correct spelling. Let me know if you would like further information. 3. Hi Kathy, Official records are those that relate to securing land from the colony (and later the commonwealth) of PA. It's a five-fold process: application, warrant, survey, application for a patent, issuance of a patent. Unofficial records related to buying and selling the land via deed or other paper of transfer.
