    3. THANK YOU so much for your reply; you have the family..... we have the info from Ohio along with a copy from the original records of their marriage in Fairfield Co., Ohio. I had an e-mail from _______ Wilson in regards to this family and he stated that Amanda Hedrick/Hetrick was from Shrewsbury, York Co., Pennsylvania, I tried to e-mail him, however, the mails kept being returned.......... so then looking at the census for 1850, we find Amanda and it matches with the ages on the census records for Ohio. We are trying at this point to find who might have emigrated from Shrewsbury, York County, to either Perry or Fairfield County, Ohio. We have several documents of Amanda or Josephine or Amanda Josephine, the name seemed to vary from one time frame to another. Since all this takes place from after 1850 and before 1860, when she is shown married to James H. Wilson, it is hard to determine what transpired in those years. Again, thanks SO VERY much for your reply. Any hints as to a direction for searching would be appreciated!!!!!!! Jo

We are searching for information on the Hedricks/Hetricks of York County, Pennsylvania; in particular Amanda Hedrick/Hetrick that is listed on the 1850 Federal Census, Shrewsbury Twp., York County, she is living in the household of John and Hannah Hetrick and would have been born about 1839. We believe, from information received, that this is the Amanda that migrated to Perry or Fairfield County, Ohio and married a James Wilson in 1859; however, we can find no definite information to substantiate the. Any information on this Amanda or other Hedricks/Hetricks of this family in York County, Pa. would be so appreciated. Jo

    1. Re: [PAYorkGEN] Re: Local Research-Monaghan Twp.
    2. Hi! The best thing I did was buy the book Guide to Research in York and Adams Counties, PA, by Robert Barnes. I read the whole book before I went to York County and I knew exactly what to look for. I estimate I saved hours and hours of work by getting this book. The Historical Society of York County is a treasure trove of information. The library is open Tues-Sat from 9-5. I went on a weekday and had plenty of help and space. You pay $4 (at least that was the charge in 2001) and they are very very helpful. The next day I went to the Adams County Historical Society in Gettysburg, right on the campus of Gettysburg College. Dr. Charles Glatfelter was there and was so helpful - he seemed to know everything that was in the library. It was open Wed 1-5 and Sat 9-5. Good hunting!! Warm wishes Diane Costello

    1. York Newspapers from the 1850s
    2. I have begun trying to break down a brick wall of many years standing involving my York County SMITH ancestors. My first question is: does anyone know whether the York Democrat Press and/or the Pennsylvania Republican in the time period of 1851 is available on film -- and if so would anyone be willing and able to easily look up a marriage listed in these papers for me? My second question is if anyone on the list knows with what church in York County the Rev. J.C. SMITH was affiliated in January 1851? The marriage record I'm interested in is listed as follows in the index of York County newspaper marriage listings for this period: Smith, Samuel - Ilgenfritz, Mrs. Catharine (Both of York Co.) January 23rd by Rev. J.C. Smith Democrat Press, February 4, 1851 Pennsylvania Republican, February 5, 1851. ~~~~~~~~ I made a copy of this index many years ago while researching at the York County Heritage Trust thinking it MIGHT be my great-great-grandparents Samuel Smith and Catharine (nee Dieterich). All I knew for certain at the time was that Samuel and Catharine are shown as parents on the baptismal record of my great-grandfather, James Henry Smith, bapt. in 1858 at First Moravian Church, York. The marriage index doesn't list Catharine's maiden name--but I'm wondering if the newspaper listing in full might do so. I now have census data that shows Catharine as having a birth year about 1828 which would make her old enough to be the Catharine who, as a widow, married Samuel Smith in 1851. In addition, the 1870 census for York shows Catharine, age 42, with children Milton, age 18, and Minnie, age 9. This also tells me that perhaps Milton Smith is the oldest child of this couple and he would have been born about 1852--just a year following the above marriage. My great-grandfather James H. is not listed with the family on this census and I've been unable to find him anywhere in York County in 1860 or 1870. So circumstantial evidence, and the fact that I've been unable to find any record of a marriage of Samuel Smith and Catharine Dieterich, leads me to pursue the above record as possibly being my ancestors. Also, if anyone knows anything about Rev. J.C. SMITH it might help me to determine if he is related to Samuel SMITH or not...which might also help to unravel the mysteries. Thanks for any help! Joan
