    1. York County Heritage Trust: was "visiting York co"

    3. Selma Going to the York County Heritage Trust Library is a great idea if you are seeking information on your family. I would like to offer you some advice before making your trip. First, make an agenda of what you are seeking when you come to the area. It will be much easier to plan your trip if you know what you are looking for. To make the most of your time at the Library, you will need to spend at least one full day there. There is tons of information to look through, so it will take some time. As a volunteer at the Library, I know first-hand the types of information you will find there. First you will need to look in the surname index for the surname you are seeking. That will give you a number for that name, and will aid volunteers when they pull your material from the shelves. One thing you may want to look through is the family file. This contains newspaper obituaries, correspondence, donated materials less than 40 pages in length, and other misc. documents. Next would be the card collection for your surname. There are a variety of cards included that were transcribed from records. The cards you will find are Wills/orphans count cards, cross reference cards, cemetery cards, vital statistic cards, and pre-1800 tax records. Besides these items, there are also tons of records on microfilm. You will find countless books that researchers donated regarding their family. The information you can find there is limitless. The Library used to be very small and cramped, but they expanded recently. It is very spacious now, making your visit more enjoyable. You may also want to check out the York County Archives during your trip. Here is their website: http://www.york-county.org/departments/archives/archives.htm Let me know if you have any questions. 3. Selma When I was in York last fall I went to the Heritage Trust in York and found they had a lot of good information. And Hanover PA Library has a Historical Room, you need to check for times they are open, you can go on line to find time information. Since my family search was York County Pa and Carroll County Md., very close I found Westminster Md Library and the Genealogical Society very helpful and in Westminster across the street is the best Genealogical Book store Willow Bend The Library, Genealogical Society and Book store are on the same street Main St. Nancy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dem Bones" <bearfoot@tds.net> To: <PA-YORK-GEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 09, 2004 10:02 PM Subject: [PAYorkGEN] visiting York co > I am considering visiting York Co to do some research. 1. Re: [PAYorkGEN] visiting York co
    2. Hello Selma: I was in York last October to basically do the same thing on my mothers families. If I had it to do again the first thing I would do is go to York City to the court house and get any information on land and dealings there and get that information off the micro film even if all isn't totally readable you get enough to put together other information. Then I would go to the Historical Society and go through what they have there. I would also joint the Historical Society if you are going to be able to go there for several days it is cheaper then paying each time. Court house information costs .25 a page. Lots at the Historical and get a York County map book which have all the cemeteries marked. You can get that book at the gift shop at the Historical Bldg. Cost about 12.00. Well worth the money. Also Dr. Hively has books there that gives information on land dealings and areas. I am sure others will help you too. Kaye

    3. I am considering visiting York Co to do some research. I am looking for suggestions on where the best places are to do research. I am looking for a Franck family who lived in Codorus twp around 1780 to the mid 1800's. Are there any tax lists for York Co? Road records for that time period? Cemetery records? I have not found Gottfried and Eve Franck on any census, but I do have them on one tax list for 1795 which was sent to me. He was a tailor. They came from Germany abt 1787. Had 3 children recorded in St. Peters (Yellow) Luth and Ref church, Anna 1788, Catherina 1793, and Frantz in 1795. Two more children recorded in Brodbecks church, Christian in 1803 and John Helfer/Helfrick bapt in 1805. Any suggestions are appreciated. thanks, Selma

    3. Asahel Lowe b 6 Mar 1769 Shrewsbury Twp,York County PA., d 12 Feb 1854 Married Keziak Clark b 4 May 1773, Harford County, MD. d 29 Jul 1860. I don't have any children listed. Asahel's Parents John Lowe b 2 mar 1731 Shrewsbury Twp, York County, PA. Mother Elizabeth Lawson No Dates. I list asahel as #4 of 12 children. John also married Providence Clark who died 10 Feb 1815.All of the above are buried in Rock Chapel Cem. Shrewsbury Twp. York County PA. John's Father was Hugh Lowe b Yorkshire ,England, d Aug 1762 York County, PA. John's mother Mary Freeman No Dates I found three children for then John, Hugh Jr.and Joshua. Hugh also married Pennellipie Harsch No Dates. Hugh served as constable1749 Overseer of the poor 1751-1756 & 1758. Shrewsbury Supervisor 1757 Hugh Came from England with 5 Brothers Will filed 25 aug 1762 in York County. Spellings Lo, Low, Lowe. Low means small hill in English. There are also Free's and others related to the Lowes in Rock chapel Cem. The Mason Dixon had not been done yet so the families could have been in PA or Maryland and used the wrong state. An interesting side note. Researching Hugh is Interesting as I found him listed as Hulo, before finding Hugh Lowe. I am descended from hugh thru Asahel's sister Hannah. I would be happy to recieve any information on the Lowe's. Steve sevenkids@att.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "D. 3. The Brethren Home Community is a retirement village for people over 55. We live in one of the cottages that house about 300 people. We have computer classes, meetings, etc. Also had a rep from PA Genealogy Society in Phila. last year. All together there are 900 people living in our village - all ages. Because I know something about the area, I answered you inquiry, but evidently it didn't reach you. Sorry. Gypsy4@localnet.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Blake M. Here they are: St. Paul's Dubs Union Church, 1958 Dubs Church Rd., Hanover, Pa. 17331 ( 717-637-2419) The sexton of that church is (717-637-5999) St. Paul's Dubs Union Church, RD 10, Hanover, PA 17331 (717-637-2090) Hope one of these will help.
