Much of the militia info is kept at the state level, rather than the federal level, even if the troops fought in the Rev. War...so, the records are kept at the state Archives. But, at best, finding these type records is pretty hit or miss.... ----- Original Message ----- From: Sherry Phillips <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2001 8:11 PM Subject: [PAYorkGEN] Revolutionary War records > How does one go about getting copies of militia lists from York County during the Revolutionary War? These are also printed in the published archives of PA, which are available in a great many libraries and no doubt, on microfilm, from the Mormon library. There are indexes scattered throughout the 9 or so series, so if you are not acquainted with them, spend some time examining the published guide first. How does one go about getting copies of militia lists from York County during the Revolutionary War? I am looking specifically for James Brinkerhoff and his five brothers who lived about 4 miles northeast of Gettysburg at that time.
Hello list Camp Security, the last remaining Revolutionary War Prison, is being threatened. I will be attending the meeting with the Springettsbury Township Board of Supervisors on May 24. This is the day that they will vote on the plan to develop the site. This past weekend, I met Ron Bissett, who traveled from Canada to see the site, and also talk to people about this dilemma. It was great to meet him, as we had many things in common. Both our ancestors were named Andrew; both were our 5th g-grandfathers, and both were at the camp at the same time. We were able to walk the site with a local historian, and was told many things about the history of the site. It is a shame the site's history is in jeopardy. I am asking anyone with an interest in this site, to attend the meeting on May 24. If you cannot attend, feel free to email me letters to give to the Board of Supervisors. You may send them via a Word program, or your regular email. I did this same thing with Quickel's Church dilemma a few years ago, and we won that battle. We can do it again. Imagine the artifacts being destroyed by the construction. Just last year, a person involved with the developer found a button from the war, while just standing in the field. There has to be countless others there as well. I was told the developer now plans to save 2 acres of the site and not develop it. Very generous of him to save that, even though it will be surrounded by $300,000 homes, and under control by the neighborhood association. Please attend the meeting or email letters to me voicing your concern. Also, forward this to all other lists you feel would be interested. Thank you all for your time. Hello I am trying to determine if Jacob Lewis Stough, who was born Mar. 6, 1836, was married two times. My records indicate he was married to Lena Berger on Oct. 18, 1857. I acquired a pension file for a Jacob L. Stough some time ago. This Jacob was enlisted in York, PA in the 12th U.S. Infantry as a 2nd Lieut. The pension file states he was married to Sarah E. Mallory on Mar. 3, 1870 in Washington, Indiana. It also states that he was not previously married. I am wondering if anyone has researched the Berger line and found this data. My data on her came from information donated to the York County Heritage Trust Library. I believe I know who donated the information. I correspond with a gentleman from the family that had an aunt submit info to the LDS that was incorrect, and we believe she donated this info on Lena as well. Can anyone assist me with this? Thanks. I have the list of church families of Round Hill Presbyterian Church, for 1782, and there are the following Smiths; William, James, Joseph, Alexander and Samuel Smith. My ancestor, Joseph Smith, was born ca 1779, and I'm sure his father was probably in this group....there are many ties to other members of the congregation, and Joseph actually named a son Andrew Duncan Smith....and there is an Andrew Duncan in the list...so, I feel sure we're in the right area. Does anyone know anything of the families of William, James, Joseph, Alexander or Samuel Smith, ca 1780? Also, does anyone know if York County has any of those EARLY BIRTHS of so and so county type books in print? Sandra
Where would I look to find out about the marriage of Peter Williams and Jane ?? The wedding took place about 1830-32. Larry

Dear list: I am interested in the Ludwig Meyer listed below from York, PA. I have a Margaretha Myers who married Johann Weissinger on Aug 17, 1806 according to Church records at St. Michaels & Zion Church in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, this is all the information I have. Johann is most likely a descendent of the Johann Ludwig Wissinger family that settled in the Frederick Co. area in the 1750's. If you have any data on Margaretha and/or this family, I would very interested. Basil Williams Company, 1776/1777. A Ludwick Myers died before 28 September 1780 leaving a widow and equal shares to George, Pegie, an Elizabeth Myers. I have found two possible documented Ludwig Myers that may be possibilities: 1) Ludwick MYERS - born ca. 1756; Frederick, Maryland (note Washington County was part of Frederick County at this time)father - Yost; mother - Anna Maria 2) Ludwig MEYER - born ca. 3 Apr 1757; Kreutz Creek-Hellam, Adams or York, Pennsylvania - father Niclaus or Nicolaus; mother Margreth or Ann Margaretha He could also be an undocumented descenant of an early Myers of the area. Any thoughts or help in further solution to the identification of this individual would be greatly appreciated.

It's a big help to have dates given for the people you wish others to look for. I, personally, have a couple of books that cover ONLY the 18th century or other specific timeframes, and don't bother looking anyone up unless I know they could be included. I also believe that any information should be posted, rather than sent to just one individual; why not share the information with all? I've found information for my own research in the answers to the queries of others.....and, the information is then archived, where others may also find things to help them. If you'd post some dates for these people, perhaps I might be able to be of help.
