Hello listers The following is transcribed from an obituary dated Dec. 8, 1939 for Edna Dora Stough. Can anyone tell me about the families listed. There are brothers listed, Harry H. and Neil. I have a Harry H. in my database that is more than likely her brother. I also have several Neil's, but cannot determine which is her brother. Any information would be helpful. Thanks for the assistance. Edna Dora Stough Miss Edna Dora Stough died at 9:35 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, MR. AND MRS. JOHN JUDY, 804 Prospect Street. Thanks for checking the PA archives indexes for Brinkerhoff. I have also checked the PA State archives and found nothing. Any other ideas for resources containing Revolutionary War records? Genealogists are the nicest people on earth! Within a few hours of my Etter family question posting, I had 3 responses. Lawrence Etter's marriage record from Thelma Deveney, three Etter will citations from S. Pierce, and the full text of Lawrence Etter's will from Dawn Desmond. No way that I can thank all of you enough for this major step in proving the Etter line. Sincerely, Shirley Mikesell

Husband a desc of John Etter, bn ca 1765, came to OH ca 1815. Possibly a son of Lawrence/Lorentz Etter who was supposed to be a son of Hans George Etter. Have been told there is a will in York Co Bk L, p 287, of either Hans or Lorentz - not sure which other researcher meant. If you have any information of this family, either proving or disproving John as a son, would greatly appreciate your help. Shirley Mikesell

Got off the telephone (5-17-01, 4 p.m.) with Christen at the York County Archives office in East York. (717) 840-7222. They are open for any walk-ins and to the public, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No reservations required. Since they are part of the local government, they DO NOT CHARGE for their services for looking up info for you. However, they do charge for copies. If you walk in and get a copy, it is 25 cents per page. If you email, or snail mail them, they charge $1.00 per copy page. They like to say they respond to email and snail mail within 24 hours. Again, however long it takes them to search for info, and how many requests one person makes, does not matter - they do not charge for this - only for copy services of pages of documents. Realize, however, they look up only those items that are at their location. Christen verified that EVERYTHING on their web page, they have at their location. They can and will look it up. So, if you ask them if they have a marriage for Joe Blow and Wendy Brown, they will search to see if they have it. They will actually search out what you ask about. I don't see how they feel they can have an answer for you in 24 hours -- but then again, I've never been there to see how "high tech" they may be, or how many employees they may have, or how many requests they get. B. Mellinger
I believe that this is what the York Archives actually have at their location, but doesn't indicate what they will do by email and snailmail......all I am aware of is the service of checking any name you send them via email, to see if it appears in the probate records...they then will tell you the price for whatever they have (will, inventory, adm. papers, etc) and you may order it by mail. However, I doubt that they will check for any/all of the things listed at this site.....if they will, then I'm going to jump for joy! My question was, and is "what will they do, via email question and snailmail?" They are also available at http://www.york-county.org/departments/archives/archavailable.htm which lists what they have available.
There is nothing to access...this is an email address, not a web site. I have used it many times to inquire if there are certain wills available, the price of ordering them, etc....I personally have not used it for anything but probate records, but would like to know what else they will do, by email..... The state of Pa. published a series of volumes called "Pa Archives" and there is a complete set of all volumes in Austin TX, at one of the Univ of TX librarys. Also there is a full set of the 3rd series at the Archives & State library in Austin , TX. . Other university librarys may also have these volumes,so you dont have to be in Pa just to do research. The staff does limited copying for mail requests, so you might want to check your local library they may be able to get copies of pages for you on interlibrary loan. Telephone and ask a local reference librarian, who may be able to help . Good luck Susan in TX
