    2. The Valley Independent Jan 29, 1996 AMOROSO Charles (Wahoo) Amoroso, 87, of Chess Street, Monongahela, died Friday, Jan 26, 1996 in Haven Crest Nursing Home, Carroll Township. He was born Dec 17, 1908, in Belle Vernon, a son of the late Georgio and Filumena Cavicchia Amoroso. Mr Amoroso was a member of Transfiguration Church of Monongahela and was retired from the former American Steel and Wire Co of Donora at 35 years of service in the No 3 rod shed. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America and the AFL/CIO. In his younger years, he was a bantamweight boxing champion with a record of 70 wins and two losses. Most of his fighting was done in Uniontown under the name Charles Ambrose. Surviving are his wife, Lorette Settimio Amoroso, with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage on Sept 27, 1995. Also surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Joanne Amoroso of Monongahela, Karl and Gail Amoroso of Monongahela, Raymond and Phyllis Amoroso of Dillonvale, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Annamarie Delzangle and David, Dwayne, Michael, Karla, Raymond Jr, Ryan and Randy Amoroso; three great-grandchildren, Rachael Delzangle, Craig Delzangle, and Kyle Amoroso; one brother, Dominick Amoroso of Rostraver Township; and three sisters, Lumena Sperling of Rockport, Md, Mary Fedarko of Belle Vernon and Mrs Arthur (Ann) Fontonelli of Monessen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, William, Joseph, Guido, Attilio and George Amoroso; and one sister, Lillian Constantino. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the LM Frye Funeral Home Inc, 427 West Main St, Monongahela. SIMPSON Nellie A Simpson, 92, of 411 Short St, Donora, died Friday, Jan 26, 1996, in Mon Valley Hospital. She was born in Rostraver Township May 19, 1903, a daughter of the late Fred and Julia Ostrander Aebi. Mrs Simpson retired from the former Monongahela Publishing Co as a staff writer. She had lived in Donora since 1927. Mrs Simpson was a member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church, Donora, and the Women’s Association of the church. She was a graduate of Donora High School Class of 1921. She was a member of Donora Area Senior Citizens and the Monongahela Chapter 108 Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James and Barbara Simpson of Falls Church, Va; two daughters and sons-in-law, Andrew P and Resilvia Clay of Belle Vernon and Donald L and Peggy Toner of California, Pa; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Mrs Simpson was the last of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Simpson; a son, Samuel R Simpson; two great-grandchildren; four brothers and six sisters. GRANUS Paul Granus Jr, 71, of North Charleroi, died Friday, Jan 26, 1996, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Aug 25, 1924, in Bentleyville, a son of the late Paul Sr and Mary Margaret Nagel Granus. Mr Granus was a graduate of Bentleyville High School and lived in Bentleyville until 1953 when he moved to Charleroi. He was employed as a union carpenter and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Local 541. He was also a member of the First Christian Church, Charleroi. Surviving are his wife, Norma Jean Hough Granus; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul Granus III and Steven John Granus, both of North Charleroi, and Allen Cecil Granus and his wife LeeAnn of Charleroi; a grandson, Allen Cecil Granus Jr; two brothers, Eli Granus of Jefferson and William Granus of Charleroi; and four sisters, Mrs Matt (Frances) Burton of Monongahela, Mrs Louis (Bluebelle) Menendez of Speers, Lillian Kelley of Scenery Hill and Sarah Mastandrea of Churchill Borough. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Samson R Granus and Walter Granus; and a sister, Gloria Schwab. Friends will be received today and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home Inc, 809 Main St, Bentleyville. BASEY Terrylee M Basey, 12, of Twelfth St, Donora, died Saturday, Jan 27, 1996, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. He was born July 20, 1983, in McKeesport, a son of Timothy and Janet Helmantoler Basey. He was a member of Free Methodist Church in Monongahela. Surviving are one sister, Sabrina Coughenour of Donora; his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Chiedor Helmantoler of Monongahela; and his paternal grandmother, Ann Lipsky Basey of Daisytown. Deceased are his maternal grandfather, Otis Helmantoler, and his paternal grandfather, Steve Basey. Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the LM Frye Funeral Home Inc, 427 West Main St, Monongahela. MIKULA George H Mikula, 80, of Monessen, died suddenly while with his wife, Dorothy, on a cruise vessel in Grand Cayman-British West Indies. A complete obituary and funeral arrangements will be announced by the Robert A Billick Funeral Home Inc, Monessen. HIGHFIELD Florence (Sunny) Highfield, 92, of Clair Manor, Belle Vernon, died Thursday, Jan 17, 1996, in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc,Carroll Township, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Fayette City, June 7, 1903, a daughter of the late Ellsworth Herbert and Aleathea Briner Johnson. Mrs Highfield was a Protestant by faith. Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Upton of Tallahassee, Fla, and Geraldine Kendall of Springville, Calif; and a brother, Willis Johnson of Fayette City RD 1. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Highfield; two brothers, Eugene G Johnson and EH Johnson Jr; and a sister, Donna Stephens. A private funeral service and interment in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Fayette City, was held. The Howard W McCrory Funeral Home, Fayette City, was in charge of arrangements. WEAVER Russell (Butch) Weaver, 48, of South California Drive, Daisytown, died Sunday, Jan 28, 1996, at his home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced, along with a complete obituary, on Tuesday. The Greenlee Funeral Home, Route 40, Beallsville, is in charge of the arrangements.
