MCPHERSON, LUPPENS, GORDON, PHILLIPS, MCDOWELL, MCBURNEY, MURKOT Funeral services for Marvin Wright MCPHERSON, husband of Nettie WILSON MCPHERSON of Imperial, were held Tuesday afternoon in the Valley Presbyterian church, Imperial. Besides his widow, he is survived by one son, G. Raymond, of Coraopolis: two daughters, Mrs. Mary TYRIE of Coraopolis and Mrs. Gladys HAMILTON of Carnegie; and five grandchildren. He also leaves on sister, Mrs. Rachel PEARSON of Pittsburgh, and two brothers, Charles W. of Canonsburg and Addison R. of Coraopolis. Charles LUPPENS, 73, died Sunday, September 26, 1943, at 6:15 p.m. in his home in Cherry street, McDonald, following a lingering illness. He was born in Anderlecht, Flanders, and came to McDonald July 5 1904. Mr. LUPPENS is survived by a son and four grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held September 30 in Pettit's funeral home, McDonald, conducted by the Rev. G. M. MCKNIGHT, D. D., pastor of the Robinson's Run U. P. church, McDonald. Burial was in Robinson's Run cemetery. Pvt. Donald T. GORDON, 21, of Primrose was killed in action in the North Africa area on Thursday, September 9, 1943. A son of Joseph T. and Hazel DAVIS GORDON of Primrose, he was born August 17, 1922, in Beaver Falls and had been a resident of Primrose for about six years. He attended the Mt. Pleasant high school at Hickory until his senior year, when he quit to enter the office of the Universal Cyclops Co. at Bridgeville. He was a member of the Robinson's Run U. P. church, McDonald, and was inducted into the service on February 7, 1943. Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, LeRoy F. GORDON of Primrose, who has been inducted into the army and leaves sometime this month for training. John E. PHILLIPS, 77, of Imperial, formerly of Burgettstown, died at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 1943, in the Bridgeville hospital, following a short illness. Mr. PHILLIPS was born August 6, 1867, in Allegheny and resid ed a number of years in Burgettstown before moving to Imperial eight years ago. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge when it was active in Burgettstown and was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian church of Burgettstown. He was married to Mrs. Elizabeth MORROW PHILLIPS, who died eight years ago. He is survived by four brothers: Robert and Walter PHILLIPS of Imperial; William of Steubenville, and Joseph of Apollo; five stepchildren: Mrs. B. H. BEATTY of Steubenville, Walter and Delbert MORROW of Massillon, Ohio, and Wilbert and Clarence MORROW of Burgettstown. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon in a Burgettstown funeral home, conducted by the Rev. William FLURKEY, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian church, Burgettstown. Burial was in Fairview cemetery. Samuel Lea MCDOWELL, 64, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 1943, in his home at Lock No. 3. A son of the late Samuel L. and Nancy ANDREWS MCDOWELL, he was born February 8, 1879 in Carnegie and came to McDonald with his parents at the age of five years. In 1919 he moved to Elizabeth and later to Lock No. 3. He was a member of the Elizabeth Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Perl SHARPNAK MCDOWELL; one son, Samuel Lea MCDOWELL, Jr., of Lock No. 3; three daughters: Mrs. Perl TINSLEY of Large, Mrs. Ruth HOFFMEISTER of Elizabeth, and Miss Sarah Jane MCDOWELL at home; four sisters: Mrs. F. M. SCHELL of Bradford, Mrs. William YOST of Carnegie, and Mrs. A. R. DAVIDSON and Mrs. J. H. MCLAUGHLIN of McDonald; four brothers: George MCDOWELL of Pittsburgh and Robert, William and James MCDOWELL of McDonald. There are seven grandchildren. A daughter, Lucille MCDOWELL, died in January of 1935 and a daughter, Ella MCDOWELL NOLDER, died in November of 1935. His father died February 9, 1911, and his mother died October 6, 1925. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the MCDOWELL home at Lock No. 3, conducted by the Rev. H. L. HENTHORNE. Burial was in the Elizabeth cemetery. James H. MCBURNEY, 82, a native of Robinson township near Midway, died at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 1943, in his home 175 Oak Spring road, Canonsburg. Until a few years ago, when he became blind, he had been actively engaged in business in Canonsburg for 50 years. He worked with his father on their farm near Primrose until he was 26 years of age. He accepted a position with the Bamford Milling Co. and remained with that firm for five years. He went to Canonsburg in 1891 and in 1901 he organized the Canonsburg Milling Co. He remained as president and manager of the concern until January of this year when he was succeeded by his son John R. MCBURNEY. He was a leader in civic and church affairs and one of the best-known men of Canonsburg. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Sarah B. SCOTT MCBURNEY; three daughters: Mrs. Newton A TANNEHILL of Houston, Miss Elizabeth at home, and Mrs. Wesley F. DAVIS of East McKeesport; one son, John R. MCBURNEY of Canonsburg; two brothers: the Rev. G. R. MCBURNEY of Sterling, Kan., and the Rev. W. J. MCBURNEY of Alamonte, Ontario, Canada; one sister, Miss Jean G. MCBURNEY of Oakland, California, and one grandson; James Boyd MCBURNEY of Canonsburg. A son, James Glenn MCBURNEY died in 1925. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in a Canonsburg funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Norman F. SPEER, pastor of the Cecil Reformed Presbyterian church. Burial was in Oak Spring cemetery. Louis MURKOT, **, died Wednesday, October 6, 1943, in the home of his brother, Walter MURKOT of Westland, following a week's illness. Mr. MURKOT lived in Chartiers township near McConnells Mills until the death of his parents when he moved to Westland to live with his brother a year ago. He was born January 14, 1914, at Arden a son of John and Teresa MURKOT. He was a member of the St. Genevieve Catholic church, Canonsburg. He is survived by two brothers, Walter of Westland and John of Canonsburg; three sisters: Mrs. Catherine TOTH of Canonsburg, Mrs. Julia KAKOWSKI of Bedford, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary GARGAL of Edwardsville. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday in St. Genevieve's catholic church, Canonsburg, in charge of the Rev. E. E. SZELONG. Burial will be in St. Patrick's cemetery, Canonsburg.
