    3. William MALARKY, Jr., aged about 25 years, well known throughout Western Pennsylvania as an athlete, probably sacrificed his own life here Saturday afternoon to save that of John POUND, both of whom were working in a room of the Jumbo mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., where a fall of slate occurred. Noticing that the roof slate had cracked and was commencing to give way, MALARKY instead of rushing from the roof to save himself waited long enough to warn the young man who was working with him. POUND leaped to safety but MALARKY was caught under the dropping rock. His back and both legs were crushed. MALARKY was placed on a train and rushed to the South Side hospital. Reports received state that his condition is critical and that there is little doubt but that he received serious internal injuries. "Coonie" as he was popularly known in the sporting world is an all-round athlete. He commenced his baseball career on the McDonald high team and later was coach for his alma mater. He has played on the McDonald and Sturgeon baseball teams for several years and is a basketball performer of ability. He is also a star in soccer football and was a member of the Sturgeon team that won the championship of Western Pennsylvania. MALARKY is married, his wife and one child residing here. He is a son of William MALARKY a well known resident of this place.
