She was born Jan 13, 1901, near Ruffsdale, a daughter of the late Emery B and Ellen FAUST SLEASMAN, and had spent most of her life in the Connellsville area. She was a member of the First EUB Church and Win One Sunday School Class. A retired farmer and stock raiser, he was a lifelong resident of Carmichaels. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels and a 58-year member of the Carmichaels Grange. He was born March 3, 1865, at Carmichaels, a son of the late Ellis and Harriet GADDIS BAILY. Surviving are three sons, two daughters, three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was the last of a family of 10. He was born in Baltimore, Md, on March 17, 1854, the son of the late James Patrick and Mary CONNELL BRODIGAN, and had resided in Connellsville district for the past 58 years. For years he was a teamster and had worked at the brewery. Mr BRODIGAN was preceded in death a year ago by his wife, Mrs Mary Ellen BRODIGAN, and there are seven children: Patrick Francis of Everson, John and C Edward at home, Bernard and Thomas of Pittsburgh, Joseph of Baltimore, Md, and Mrs Mary PIPER of Monessen. There are 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Monday morning with requiem high mass at 9 oclock at Immaculate Conception Church in charge of Rev Father Henry GEIBEL, pastor. Burial will be made in the new St Joseph’s Cemetery. MCCLINTOCK Robert R MCCLINTOCK, 64 years old, formerly of Fayette and Somerset counties, died at 6 45 oclock Friday evening at Mason City, Iowa, of a heart attack. Mr MCCLINTOCK was born in Somerset county, near Confluence, and had resided in the Connellsville district for a number of years, going to Iowa about 30 years ago. The Valley Independent Jan 29, 1996 AMOROSO Charles (Wahoo) Amoroso, 87, of Chess Street, Monongahela, died Friday, Jan 26, 1996 in Haven Crest Nursing Home, Carroll Township. He was born Dec 17, 1908, in Belle Vernon, a son of the late Georgio and Filumena Cavicchia Amoroso. Mr Amoroso was a member of Transfiguration Church of Monongahela and was retired from the former American Steel and Wire Co of Donora at 35 years of service in the No 3 rod shed. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America and the AFL/CIO. In his younger years, he was a bantamweight boxing champion with a record of 70 wins and two losses. Most of his fighting was done in Uniontown under the name Charles Ambrose. Surviving are his wife, Lorette Settimio Amoroso, with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage on Sept 27, 1995. Mr Granus was a graduate of Bentleyville High School and lived in Bentleyville until 1953 when he moved to Charleroi. He was employed as a union carpenter and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Local 541. He was also a member of the First Christian Church, Charleroi. Surviving are his wife, Norma Jean Hough Granus; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul Granus III and Steven John Granus, both of North Charleroi, and Allen Cecil Granus and his wife LeeAnn of Charleroi; a grandson, Allen Cecil Granus Jr; two brothers, Eli Granus of Jefferson and William Granus of Charleroi; and four sisters, Mrs Matt (Frances) Burton of Monongahela, Mrs Louis (Bluebelle) Menendez of Speers, Lillian Kelley of Scenery Hill and Sarah Mastandrea of Churchill Borough. Mr Ackard retired from the Monessen Plant of Pittsburgh Steel Co in 1952. He was a member of Modern Woodman of America Lodge, Charleroi and a member of the Spiritualist Church, Charleroi. DUVALL Cassius Duvall of 587 Johnson Road, Chillicothe, Ohio, died yesterday at his home. Mr Duvall lived at 427 Knox Ave, Monessen, until the death of his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Duvall on March 1, 1964. He then moved to Chillicothe to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Walter (Lillian) Smith. He retied in 1959 from the boiler room of the Page plant of the American Chain and Cable Co. He was a former member of the First Christian Church of Monessen at the time of his death was a member of the First Christian Church of Chillicothe. He was also a member of the F and AM Lodge 461 of California, Pa. RYAN, MAURIN, RANK, COOK, BICJAK Mrs. RYAN, a widow, died very suddenly of heart failure at Sturgeon Tuesday morning. Mrs. RYAN was about forty years of age and is survived by six children. Mary MAURIN, fifteen years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor MAURIN of Valley St. died Friday evening Sept. 14. Interment at Hilldale Cemetery Sunday at two p.m. Antonia RANK, daughter of Emile RANK, Champion, died Thursday evening Sept. 13th, aged 18 years. Funeral at the home of the parents. Interment was made in Arlington cemetery. Miss RANK is survived by two sisters and one brother. William H. COOK, brother of Burgess R. J. COOK, died of dropsy at 8 o'clock Saturday evening, aged 59 years. Mr. COOK was born and raised in England. His wife dying there some years since he came to this country about two years ago to make his home with his brother. The funeral was held from Burgess COOK's residence Tuesday at 2 p.m., Rev. IRONS of the U. P. church conducting the ceremonies. Interment at Arlington. Mrs. Emma BICJAK of Bishop was fatally burned Tuesday evening while pouring oil from a can on a smoldering fire. The can explodes throwing the burning oil over her. She rand from the house with her clothing on fire followed by her husband who was trying to beat out the flames with his hands, but before they could be extinguished she was so badly burned that she died at midnight. Dr. KOHLER was summoned and everything possible was done to save her life Mrs. BICJAK was about 40 years old and leaves a husband and six children. Interment Thursday afternoon in Melrose cemetery at Bridgeville.
GEORGE, NOLDER, GRANT, SIMPSON John Jay GEORGE of Midway died at the home of his brother Thos. P. GEORGE in McDonald on Monday, September 3d, at noon, aged 59 years and seven months. Mr. GEORGE was born in Columbiana Co., O., and came to Mt. Pleasant Township years ago where he located on a farm near Primrose. About four years ago he moved to Midway where he has since resided. He was a useful and highly respected member of his community, and was an elder in the Center U. P. church of Midway. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma GEORGE, three brothers, Thos. P. of McDonald, W. K. and L. E. of West Point, O., and a sister Mrs. S. J. KYLE, of Briggsville, Ill. Funeral services were held at the home in Midway Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. D. GIBSON, assisted by Rev. J. W. ENGLISH and Rev. W. D. IRONS of McDonald. Mrs. Barbara NOLDER, wife of John NOLDER, a well known oil operator, died at her home on Fanny street Monday, Sept. 3, aged 60 years and one month. Mrs. NOLDER had been afflicted for years and her patient fortitude through all her suffering had endeared her to all friends and acquaintances. She was born in Bern, Switzerland, August 7, 1846. Was married to Mr. NOLDER April 11, 1865. They moved here from North Clarendon, Pa., about twelve years ago. Mrs. NOLDER was a member of the First Presbyterian church of McDonald, and was an active Christian worker in that organization. She is survived by her husband and one son, William NOLDER of Mannington, W. Va., and three daughters, Emma, wife of Robert JOHNSON, of Marietta O.; Carrie, wife of P. A. SCHRECONGOST, of Mannington, W. Va., and Mary, wife of R. D. WHITE, of Sheffield, Pa., also two brothers, John EUCHLER of Manorville, Pa, and George of San Francisco, Cal., and five sisters, Mrs. Katherine FERGUSON, of Montpelier, Ind.; Mrs. Margaret MCCOURT, of Bradford; Mrs. Laura WILSON, of Buffalo, N. Y.; Mrs. Mary HAMILTON, of Kittanning, Pa., and Mrs. Lyda ATKISON, of Wilkinsburg. The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. P. JORDAN in the First Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended, the business houses of the town being closed during the services. The remains were interred in Arlington cemetery. Mrs. Margaret GRANT attended the funeral of Mrs. E. Detmor FORSYTHE at Steubenville recently. *Midway column W. James SIMPSON of Burgettstown and well known in McDonald, died suddenly at his home on Friday, August 31, of heart trouble. Mr. SIMPSON was 58 years of age and was in his usual health until a few hours before his death. He owned several residence properties in McDonald.
MASTERS, WHITE, PITNER, CRAWFORD, FORSYTHE, GOWLAND, ROMILLA Earl MASTERS who has been a bookkeeper in the Pittsburg Coal office here since last February, and who went to his home at Fern, Pa., sick a week ago, died Wednesday evening of typhoid pneumonia. Mr. MASTERS was twenty-two years of age and was highly esteemed by employers and associates. He belonged to the O. O. O. F. lodge here who sent a committee to represent them to his funeral which took place Friday. A number of beautiful floral tributes were sent by the lodge and by former associates in the Coal office. D. J. WHITE a veterinary surgeon who has lived in Clinton for a number of years stated for his family for a drive across the West Virginia line Friday of last week. In rounding a narrow place in the road the horse was thrown over an embankment, throwing the family from the buggy and breaking Mr. WHITE's neck, his death ensuing almost instantly. The little daughter of J. S. PITNER of Mannington, W. Va., but formerly of Midway, died Sunday, August 26. The remains were brought to Midway on Tuesday. Services were held in the M. E. church conducted by Rev. D. L. HEADLEE. Interment at Center cemetery. *Midway column Brady, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. CRAWFORD died Friday morning Aug. 24. He was about 14 years old and is survived by his parents and several brothers and sisters. Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. from his home conducted by Revs. GIBSON, HEADLEE and MARLIN. Interment at Center. *Midway column Word was received here Monday, Aug. 27, of the death of Mrs. E. Detmor FORSYTHE of Moundsville, W. Va. Mrs. FORSYTHE was formerly of Midway and her many friends regret to hear of her death. She is survived by her husband and two children who have the sympathy of the whole community. She was brought to Steubenville, O., and buried on Tuesday. *Midway column Breaking away from the officer when the latter attempted to arrest him at Third avenue and Grant street, Pittsburg, Herbert GOWLAND, aged 20, McKees Rocks, was shot by Officer David BOWLES and died 15 minutes later. The officer was one of a raiding squad under Inspector R. H. ROBINSON, detailed from Central station to continue the crusade against corner loafing. BOWLES is detained at Central station until action is taken by the coroner. Joe ROMILLA, an Italian, of near Cross Creek, accidentally shot himself through the lungs Saturday, dying almost instantly. Recently he bought a shot gun and on Saturday started with it for the woods. Finding that he had forgotten something he returned to the house and set the loaded gun down in the cellar way. In picking it up later he seized it by the barrels and attempted to lift it out. The hammer caught and was released, and the charge of shot passed upwards through ROMILLA's body, tearing off his forearm and making a huge hole in his lungs. He died in a few minutes.
RIFFLEY, YOUNG, LLOYD The death trap at the railroad station here added another victim to its long list on Saturday evening. Edward RIFFLEY of Oakdale went to the station to take the 10 o'clock train for home. As he was about to cross the four tracks to reach the station a freight train passed on the North track and before it had passed the 10:43 passenger Eastbound pulled into the station. As soon as he could pass behind the freight he hastened toward his own train when a fast express on the main track going East struck him and carried him about 50 feet throwing him on the West-bound main track. At the same instant almost, a fast West-bound train on this track caught him and dragged him back nearly to the crossing again. It was a most horrible accident, and the body was mangled beyond recognition. The remains were interred in the Oakdale cemetery on Monday. Mr. RIFFLEY was a highly respected citizen, a veteran of the Spanish war, foreman of the Oakdale volunteer fire company, a member of the RIFFLEY contracting and building firm. Two brothers survive, George of Oakdale and Will of San Diego, Cal. On Wednesday evening John YOUNG a well known miner at the Laurel hill mine and who lived with his parents on East Lincoln avenue, was found unconscious in the street about 2 o'clock in the morning at the high embankment on the MILLER farm East of town. He was carried home by those who found him and laid on the porch of the supposition that he was only intoxicated. Early in the morning his mother found him on the porch in a semi-conscious condition. A gash was found on his head and his face was badly bruised. He could give no account as to how he received injuries, and sank rapidly until his death which occurred about noon. Foul play was suspected and the Coroner was summoned. An investigation indicated that he died of cerebral congestion brought on evidently by falling down the bank to the street. Funeral services were held from the family home Friday afternoon by Rev. JORDAN of the First Presbyterian church. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas YOUNG, three sisters, Mrs. Walter PHILLIPS, Mrs. James RICHARDS, and Mrs. William SMITH, and three brothers: William, Robert and Thos., Jr., all of McDonald. Phillip LLOYD, a miner living at the Fayette mine, near Noblestown was struck by a coal train between Oakdale and his home on Monday night and fatally injured. He had been at McDonald in the evening and as the nine train East does not stop at Noblestown he went on to Oakdale and was walking back home along the railroad when he was struck by a train coming West. He was brought on to McDonald where he was attended by Drs. MILLER, LA ROSS and TAYLOR, and sent to a Pittsburgh hospital where he died at noon Tuesday. He leaves a wife and family at Noblestown.
PEARCE, MCMICHAEL, HARVEY, DRUM, DEWITT, GILLESPIE Robert Elmer PEARCE, the fourth victim of the PEARCE family murderer died on Sunday. The only surviving member of a family of five now is the father. A port mortem examination revealed the fact that the bullet had ranged downward and lodged in the neck where it caused hemorrhages which resulted in the child's death. *Article about the murders in the PAWASHIN archives A message was received by B. FRANKLE Tuesday night announcing the death of John MCMICHAEL formerly a well known and highly respected citizen of McDonald. Mr. MCMICHAEL left here about nine years ago for Leon, O., where he engaged in farming and has lived there ever since. He was one of the charter members of Garfield Lodge F. & A. M. Mrs. Jane HARVEY, wife of Robert HARVEY, to whom she was married only a week before, died in the Homeopathic hospital Wednesday morning Aug. 8, of typhoid fever aged 36. Mrs. HARVEY was the widow of William KYLE who was killed in a mine about a year ago. She is survived by her husband, two brothers, Thomas and Samuel GAULT, and a sister Lizzie GAULT of Pittsburg. Funeral services were held from her late home on Center avenue Friday afternoon, Rev. JORDAN officiating. Interment at Arlington. Rev. Father J. R. DRUM, late of Lecrone, Pa., and recently appointed pastor of St. Patrick's church at Noblestown died Monday morning at Mercy hospital Pittsburg, aged 40. Rev. DRUM's death was the result of an accident that occurred in Oakdale. On Friday evening last while he and Father J. A. BURGOON, of McDonald were driving in a buggy the horse took fright at an automobile and ran away. Both were thrown out and Father DRUM struck against a fence, one of the pickets of which penetrated his neck. He was taken to the residence of John MCCABE and was removed to the hospital on Sunday where he died the following morning. August DEWITT died Friday, August 3, 1906 after a lingering illness. GUY, ABEL, DOLLE, HOFFMAN, MAJOR, HAMILTON Mr. and Mrs. H. F. HUMPHRIES attended the funeral of Mrs. Fanny GUY, aunt of Mr. HUMPHRIES, on Wednesday. Edward ABEL, a Burgettstown tailor aged 29 years was drowned in the swimming pool at Rock Springs Park Saturday evening. A disastrous wreck occurred on the Chartiers & Youghiogheny railroad at Woodville Friday evening of last week. One person, Phillip DOLLE, of Heidelberg, was instantly killed and some twenty passengers injured. Mrs. Elizabeth HAGGERTY HOFFMAN aged 59 years, died Tuesday morning at her home in Noblestown, Pa. She had been in failing health for three or four years. She was a daughter of John and Mary DONALDSON HAGGERTY, formerly of Canonsburg and lived at Noblestown about 30 years. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. She leaves a husband, George W., and four children: The Rev. John W. HOFFMAN, pastor of the California avenue Methodist Episcopal church Allegheny; Jos. J., of Coraopolis; Mary E., wife of the Rev. Calvin G. HAZLETT, of Bellaire, O., and George W. Jr., who is associated with is father in business and who is a trustee in the Noblestown Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral took place from the family residence Thursday morning and was largely attended, many friends from McDonald being present. Interment at Arlington. Miss Bessie BELL left on Wednesday evening for Carlton, Kansas, to attend the funeral of her uncle, Jas. The new-born infant of Mr. and Mrs. Charles MCKEE of South Fayette township died Sunday, July 22. The funeral was held Monday. Interment at Arlington. On Wednesday July 25th at Cherry Valley Autoni VYSTIECK son of Autoni and Mrs. VYSTIECK, aged 6 months. Interment and funeral services at Noblestown Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Mrs. Constance HUTSEBAUT, 68 years old, died Sunday, July 22, at her home at Cecil. The deceased at one time live here, also at Midway. Her husband and three married daughters survive. The funeral took place Tuesday. Interment was made at Venice. Miss GOSS, of near Imperial was bitten by a dog two months ago, but failed to take any treatment, thinking it to be unnecessary. On Monday of last week she was taken ill and sent to a hospital. There her case was pronounced hopeless and she died the following Thursday. The death was a very sad one as she was but 20 years of age and expected to be married in a short time. Mr. and Mrs. D. R. MCNARY attended the funeral of P. D. LITTELL, in Pittsburg, last week. Thomas COLWELL, who shot himself Saturday, July 14, at his home near the Shaw mine, died on Wednesday in the Mercy hospital. The remains were brought to the home of his father-in-law, R. T. CHETTLE, and services were held from there on Thursday conducted by Rev. D. L. HEADLEE, he was laid to rest in Center cemetery. *Midway column Once more has the Angel of Death visited our midst and plucked one of our brightest flowers, leaving desolate a home, where but a few short hours before was perfect happiness. On last Sunday night the spirit of little Cyrene, the 8 year old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. J. NEWCOMB winged on its way to that bright and heavenly home from whence no traveler returneth. Like a bud just ready to bloom was little Cyrene when the hand of death was laid upon her and God took her to himself, leaving behind aching hearts and scalding tears. It is said most truthfully the ways of God are mysterious and surpass man's understanding, but he doeth all things well. . Cyrene was sick a very short time with diphtheria and her death was a surprise to her many friends. QUINN, PEACOCK, EFT, BUTTERWORTH, HARVEY John QUINN of Cecil aged 44 years, died suddenly on Friday morning at 5 a.m. of apoplexy. Survived by four sons and one daughter. Mr. QUINN returned from Europe only last Monday where he had been in search of his health. Interment will be made at Noblestown Sunday morning. Miss Cora M. PEACOCK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William PEACOCK, Jr., died Thursday at 10 o'clock at the home of her parents, near Boyce, Allegheny county, in the 20th year of her age. Miss PEACOCK had suffered for some time from lung trouble, which disease caused her death. Besides her parents, three sisters survive, these being Emma, Mary and Anna. Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon, from the PEACOCK home, and the interment will be in the cemetery at Venice. On Wednesday morning, July 18, Mrs. Louise EFT, wife of John EFT of near Steubenville, aged 57 years. Mrs. EFT was stricken while on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Frank W. RAAB of Midway. She is survived by her husband and nine sons and daughters: Jno. M. EFT of near Bulger, Geo. F. EFT, Mrs. F. W. RAAB of Midway; Henry M., Lizzie G., Mary M., Annie W., Katy C., and Winnie all at home. Funeral services were held at the home of F. W. RAAB of Midway Friday afternoon by Rev. A. F. ZONER. Interment in Arlington cemetery. Mrs. Mary BUTTERWORTH, wife of Thos. BUTTERWORTH died on Monday morning, July 16, 1906, of cancer of stomach and liver, at her home near Primrose. WHITE, MCCONNELL, GRAY, MCANANY, BARRETT Mrs. Mary WHITE, the colored woman who was drowned while bathing in the river near Monongahela Saturday was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. BUTLER of the South Side. Mr. WHITE was killed about a year ago in the Hazelkirk mine. Died July 4, Mrs. Archie MCCONNELL, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John STEELE, of Sturgeon, aged 42 years. Mrs. MCCONNELL leaves a husband and three children, funeral services at her late home, July 6, at 4:30 p.m. Services were conducted by Revs. WOLF and DOAK. *Sturgeon column Mrs. D. G. GRAY died July 4th after a lingering illness of Bright's disease. Deceased was aged about 40 years and has been a life long member of the U. P. church. She is survived by her husband and father, J. G. PYLES and one sister, Mrs. Oliver DWYER, and one brother, S. H. PYLES, all of Midway. Funeral services were held Friday from her late home, services were conducted by Rev. J. D. GIBSON assisted by Rev. IRONS of McDonald, and Rev. KERR of Candor. Interment at Candor. *Midway column Mrs. John MCANANY of East Pittsburg but formerly of Midway, died at her home Monday, July 9th, of typhoid fever. Mrs. MCANANY had been in ill health for some time before the fever developed. She is survived by her husband and several children. She was about 36 years of age. George and James MCFARLANE of this place were brothers of Mrs. MCANANY and Mrs. Robert HERD and Mrs. John COCHRAN are half sisters. MILLER, JONES, DELANEY, HOLLAND Susanna, aged two years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John MILLER who live on the MEVEY place, died Saturday evening of cholera infantum. Funeral Monday afternoon, interment at Noblestown. James JONES a colored man who lived at Sturgeon was killed by a train on the Fourth. He was 55 years old and was well respected. His wife who survives him is in the Allegheny Co. home with a broken arm. The funeral was held Thursday. Interment at Arlington. Died, July 4th, Mrs. Thomas DELANEY, aged 24 years. Mrs. DELANEY leaves a husband and three children. *Sturgeon column Gladys, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manoah HOLLAND, died on Sunday morning of pneumonia, aged two years and three months. Services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. J. D. GIBSON. Interment at Center cemetery. *Midway column
COOK, REED At her home in Washington, Iowa, June 27, at 11 p.m., died Mrs. Jane COOK in the 82nd year of her age. Mrs. COOK was the daughter of Wm. SAVAGE, a most highly respected citizen of this community fifty and more years ago. He lived on the farm north of town now owned by J. N. ELLIOTT, Esq. Here Mrs. COOK was brought up under most wholesome influences, and in early womanhood became a member of Robinson's Run A. R. church, of which her father was a ruling elder. Although the union of 1858 changed the name, her church relations remained the same during her long life. About fifty years ago, she, with her husband John COOK, moved to the vicinity of Washington, Iowa, and a little later into the city where she has lived since. Mrs. COOK was a most estimable Christian woman, whose aim in life seemed to be, to be like Christ. She has now gone, but we mourn not for her, but for ourselves. She was a child of God and an heir of eternal glory. "For if children then heirs." She leaves two sons, William A. and R. S., both citizens of Washington, Iowa, host of friends, many of whom live in the vicinity of McDonald to mourn the loss of a mother and a most excellent woman. Her husband, John COOK, who was a brother of Elizabeth COOK of McDonald, and a daughter Ada, died some years ago. At the time of her death Mrs. C. had been for nearly fifty years a member of the Second U. P. church of Washington, Iowa. "Blessed are the dead," etc. Miss Lizzie A. REED died June 20 of general debility. Deceased was about 63 years old and is survived by one sister and two brothers, Maria, James and Theodore, all of Midway. The funeral services were held Friday from her late home. Interment at Mt. Prospect Presbyterian cemetery. *Midway column
