    3. SCHAYES, COUCH, SINGERS, BISH, HOFFMAN, COOK Gregory SCHAYES was killed Thursday, July 26, at 1:15 o'clock, in the Jumbo mine, now known as Montour No. 1, of the Pittsburg Coal company. He was working in a main entry with his brother, Arthur SCHAYES, when a fall of slate caught him and crushed out his life. Mr. SCHAYES was a well-known and respected mine-worker and lived out Valley street. He was born near Charleroi, Belgium, September 12, 1864 and came to this country when a young man. He was united in marriage with Miss Camille CARLY and to this union five children were born, three of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Wendell P. STAMPFLY, Fanny st., and George and Telesphore at home. Mrs. SCHAYES survives; also his aged mother who resides at Sturgeon and four brothers and sisters: Arthur SCHAYES of McDonald, Eli J. SCHAYES of Sturgeon, Mrs. Adolph PLETINCKS and Mrs. Xavier LORENT of the Monongahela Valley. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the French church of McDonald. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hultz COUCH of Cherry Valley died Tuesday, July 31, 1917. The child was one of twins. Besides the parents two other children survive. The funeral was held Wednesday. Interment in Robinson's Run cemetery. Mrs. Sarah A. SINGERS, in her 70th year, died at her home in Noblestown, at 6:20 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, 1917, after a brief illness. Mrs. SINGERS had not been well for some time, but her condition was not considered serious until within the last few days. Mrs. SINGERS was one of the oldest residents of Noblestown, having lived here about 40 years. Three sons, John, of Salem, W. Va., Joseph of California, Walter of Noblestown, and one daughter living near St. Louis, Mo., survive here. The funeral services were held at the home in Noblestown, interment being made in South Side cemetery, Pittsburg. Mrs. Catherine BISH, aged 67 years, widow of George W. BISH, died at her home in Valley street on Wednesday, August 1, 1917. Death was due to cancer, from which she had suffered nearly nine months. Mrs. BISH was born in Clarion Co., in 1850 and lived there until her marriage to Mr. BISH in 1870. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. BISH lived at Pithole City for about ten years. They located at Midway about twenty-two years ago. Mr. BISH died September 9, 1912. Last October Mrs. BISH moved to McDonald. Mrs. BISH is survived by seven sons and two daughters: Charles of Southview, James of Dennison, Ohio, Clarence, Oliver and Albert of McDonald, John and Walter at home, Mrs. John BEERS of Santiago and Mrs. George POWELSON of Midway. Eighteen grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Midway Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in the Center cemetery at Midway. Mrs. W. T. HOFFMAN, wife of Prof. W. T. HOFFMAN, died at her home in Monongahela City on Thursday morning, aged 60 years. She had been in failing health for the past three years but had only been confined to her bed for the past week. Mrs. HOFFMAN was the daughter of W. C. and Margaret CAMPBELL and was born at the CAMPBELL homestead south of Midway. She was married to Mr. HOFFMAN October 11, 1883, and for some time after resided with her husband here. For the last 20 years Professor and Mrs. HOFFMAN had made their home at Monongahela. Mrs. HOFFMAN was prominent in church and charitable work. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the W. C. T. U. of Monongahela. Besides her husband, she leaves four sisters and two brothers: Mrs. L. L. GLADDEN of Carthage, Mo., Mrs. J. H. MCCLUSKEY of Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Elizabeth LOUPE of Ingram, Mrs. S. A. MCCALMONT of Hickory, E. H. CAMPBELL of Salem, O., and J. S. CAMPBELL of Monongahela. Funeral services will be held at the late home today (Saturday) at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the Monongahela cemetery. The funeral of Mrs. Mary COOK, who went to California for her health, was held in the Candor church Saturday. Rev. J. V. STEVENSON had charge. Interment was in Candor cemetery. *Candor column

    3. GALVIN, WILLIAMS, WHEELER, STEVENSON Michael GALVIN, an aged resident of Laurel Hill, who died the latter part of the week, did not commit suicide as reported. Mr. GALVIN was stricken with neuralgia of the heart. He had attempted to take a drink of water and the vessel he got hold of had been used with paris green. But Mr. GALVIN was unable to swallow any of the water from the vessel. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. Fr. BURGOON, of St. Alphonsus church. Harry WILLIAMS died at his home in Primrose, Tuesday evening, after an illness of eighteen months. Funeral services were conducted at the late home, Thursday, in charge of the Knights of Pythias of Midway. Interment was made at Wilkinsburg. The deceased is survived by his wife (nee Flora RHIEL of Midway) and infant daughter. Mrs. Cecelia WHEELER, aged about 85 years, died Tuesday morning, July 17, 1917, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Susan TUCKER at Monessen. Mrs. WHEELER became ill in McDonald and was taken to a Pittsburg hospital on July 1. The Sunday prior to her death Mrs. TUCKER took her to Monessen. "Aunt Celia," as she was familiarly known, came from Appomattox county, Va., to McDonald about 22 years ago. In her younger days she was a slave. Besides her daughter, Mrs. TUCKER, she is survived by two sons, Washington WHEELER, at Monessen and Thaddeus WHEELER of McDonald, also by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at Monessen last Friday, with interment at that place. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. STEVENSON and daughter Rachel of Noblestown, attended the funeral of Mr. STEVENSON's brother, J.     3. MOLONEY, ORWIG, ELDER, ROEBUL, BUTTERWORTH Miss Kathryn MOLONEY, for 16 years proprietor of a dry goods store here, died Tuesday morning, May 8, at the home of her sister, Miss Hannah J. MOLONEY in Pittsburg. She had been ill for three years of rheumatism and a complication of diseases, which at last caused her death. She made her home with her sister during the last three years. Miss MOLONEY was born May 9, 1861 at Bowerstown, Ohio, the daughter of Patrick and Bridget MOLONEY. When about ten years old her family moved to McDonald and until compelled to travel for her health she lived in this city. She attended the public schools and graduated from the Oakdale academy. For over sixteen years Miss MOLONEY conducted the dry goods store in Lincoln avenue, now conducted by her sister, Miss Bridget Gertrude MOLONEY. She was a devout and faithful member of St. Alphonsus' church, and was a member of the L. C. B. A., the C. R. M. B. A., and of the McDonald Hive, Ladies of the Maccabees. Miss MOLONEY is survived by three sisters and three brothers: Miss Hannah Josephine MOLONEY, of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Mary Frances GILMOUR of Terre Haute, Ind.; Miss Bridget Gertrude MOLONEY of McDonald; Patrick MOLONEY of Chillicothe, Ohio, Michael MOLONEY of Columbus, Ohio, and John MOLONEY of Carnegie. Funeral services were held Friday morning at 8:45 o'clock in the St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church here and interment was made in Steubenville. Dr. ORWIG received word yesterday telling him of the death of his brother, Dr. J. B. ORWIG, of Toledo, Ohio. Mr. ORWIG died very suddenly. Dr. ORWIG expects to leave today to attend the funeral of his brother. Lee ELDER and Mrs. Edward CAMPBELL attended the funeral of their mother, Mrs. ELDER at Florence, Sunday. *Bulger column Messrs. The deceased is survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Emma POULLARD, of Primrose. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Susan HICKS of Primrose, and Mrs. Margaret PINDEVILLE, of Midway. Mr. BUTTERWORTH had been employed by the Carnegie Coal company. He had been a resident of this section for 30 years. The funeral services were held on Monday at 2 o'clock at the late home. FLOWERS, FERRIS, BROIDA, SOULERET, GILSON, CHEW William FLOWERS, aged 55 years, who for the past 26 years had resided in McDonald, died Saturday evening at 6 o'clock, at a sanitarium at Mercer, where he went several weeks ago for treatment. He was a native of Green county, having been born at Waynesburg. Mrs. FLOWERS, formerly Miss Mary MCCRONE, survives with two daughters with two daughters: Mrs. Frank BEPLER and Miss Esther FLOWERS, both of McDonald. One brother and four sisters survive: Jonathan FLOWERS of Waynesburg; Mrs. L. S. HUMMELL, Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. Catherine SMITH, Stockton, Kan.; Mrs. Perry STEWART, Wheeling, W. Va.; and Mrs. Minnie DILLE of Waynesburg. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Dr. W. D. IRONS. Interment was in the Robinson Run cemetery. News was received here last Sunday of the death of Samuel W. FERRIS, for many years active in the oil and gas fields of this section, which occurred Saturday evening at 6:30 o'clock at his home in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He was 59 yeas of age and had located in Oklahoma about 18 months ago. He recently contracted a heavy cold which caused his death. Mr. FERRIS was born near Linden, Washington county. He lived here for 20 years. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge of McDonald. Mrs. FERRIS survives with a son, James M. FERRIS, and a daughter Miss Margaret FERRIS, both at home. Four sisters and three brothers also survive: Mrs. Isaac C. PATSCH, of Houston; Mrs. George ZERBY, of Clarksburg, W. Va.; Mrs. John TURNER, of Steubenville, O.; Mrs. John BISHOP, of West Newton; John FERRIS, of Los Angeles, Calif.; George FERRIS, of Sandy Lake, Pa., and the Rev. J. S. FERRIS, of Montrose, Colo. The body was brought to McDonald where funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, Rev. W. D. IRONS officiating. The interment was in the Oak Springs cemetery at Canonsburg. Mrs. Leah BROIDA died at her home in Pittsburg, Sunday evening, April 29, aged 74 years. Mrs. BROIDA is survived by the following children; M. R. BROIDA, of McDonald, J. S. BROIDA, of Parkersburg, Sam'l BROIDA of Burgettstown, James BROIDA, of Shreveport, La., and one daughter Mrs. Jennie GROSSMAN of Pittsburg. Funeral services were held at her home Tuesday morning. Burns received by George SOULERET, aged 18 months, when his toy broom caught fire as he played before an open grate, resulted in the child's death at 5 o'clock Saturday evening, at the home of the parents. His right side was terribly burned when his clothing became ignited. Besides the parents, three brothers and two sisters survive. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the SOULERET home, in charge of the Rev. J. B. CAVITT. Interment was made in the Robinson Run cemetery. The Rev. Dr. S. S. GILSON, aged 75 years, one of the best known Presbyterian ministers in the Pittsburg district, died Wednesday in his home, 105 Crafton avenue, Crafton. He had been retired for many years. He was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson college, and early in life had charges in Bowling Green, Ky., and Uniontown, Pa. For a time he was associate editor of the Herald and Presbyter and later was on the staff of the Presbyterian Banner and the Chronicle Telegraph. He was a Civil war veteran and commander of the G. A. R. post in Carnegie. He leaves three daughters: Mrs. William COOPER of Germany, and Miss Mary and Miss Agnes GILSON.     3. While trying to board a moving eastbound train at the city depot, Friday night, Edward L. KELLEY, age 30 years, well-known oil driller and son of M. C. KELLEY of Washington, Pa., was thrown under the wheels and so badly injured that his death occurred within a few minutes. His right arm and leg were severed from his body. Several persons witnessed the accident and he was immediately picked up and taken into the depot, but life was extinct before the doctors arrived. For nine years Mr. KELLEY was employed in the oil fields in the vicinity of Bakersfield, California. He returned to Washington last November following the death of his wife, which occurred last spring, and had since resided here. For several weeks he had been employed drilling at Dennison, Ohio, and was en route to his home in Washington when the accident occurred. His mother, Mrs. M. C. KELLEY, died suddenly of heart failure on March 16 at Elizabeth while visiting her husband who was employed at that place at the time. Mr. KELLEY leaves a son, Edward L. KELLEY, Jr., aged three years, who resides with his aunt, Mrs. John MALONEY, of Binghamton, N. Y. His father survives with one brother, William KELLEY, of Washington, and one sister, Mrs. James PLANKINSOP, of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. KELLEY was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and of B. P. O. Elks lodge, No. 266 of Bakersfield, Calif. The body was taken charge of by Deputy Coroner H. F. HUMPHRIES, of this city and was taken to Washington, Saturday.

    3. PORTER, MCCANDLESS, JOHNSTON George PORTER, superintendent of the South Penn Oil company, Midland division, died Monday morning in his home, 151 South Negley avenue, Pittsburg. Mr. PORTER was one of the best know oil operators in the Eastern fields. He had been identified with the industry 43 years, and had operated in nearly all of the Pennsylvania fields. He was born in County Armagh, near Belfast, Ireland, in 1844, and came to America when he was 15 years old. He lived with his cousin in Beaver county until he went to Oil City in 1864, securing a position there as a clerk in a hardware store. He became a member of the firm the following year and continued in this business until 1874, when he became interested in oil operations and with Robert M. WAUGH, under the name of WAUGH & PORTER, operated extensively in the Butler, Bradford and Richburg oil fields. In 1886 Mr. PORTER became identified with the Standard Oil company, in the fuel department. In 1890 he was appointed superintendent of the South Penn Oil company at Oil City and in 1897 he was transferred to the Bradford district and in 1902 to the Pittsburg district. He was a member of the East Liberty Presbyterian church and Petrolia Lodge F. & A. M., of Oil City. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. William GATES of South Negley avenue, Pittsburg, with whom he lived since the death of his wife, six years ago, and Mrs. E. A. NISBET of Amber street, Pittsburg; one brother and two sisters in Ireland. Mrs. Margaret MCCANDLESS died March 26 at her home in Orion, Ill. The deceased was a sister of the late Henry BURNS, married John MCCANDLESS and went to her western home and lived there all her married life. She leaves two sons, George at the old home and Wallace of Brooklyn, and one daughter, Miss Laura, who was companion in her younger days and helper and caretaker when old age and disease came. She was much missed in the home she left and in the life of the one she went to. An only brother, A. R.     3. FECHTEA, BROMILEY, WINTERS Mrs. Minnie R. FECHTEA died at the Presbyterian hospital, Monday, ___ 2, aged 39 years. The deceased was born in Halifax, England, her maiden name being HOLT. Mrs. FECHTEA is survived by her husband and five children. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their __parable loss. The funeral services were held Thursday with Blessing Service by Rev. F. COX. Interment was in St. Patrick's cemetery. Thomas BROMILEY, Sr., died at his home at 5:55 o'clock, Tuesday evening, as a result of the shock suffered when caught in a fall of slate at the Bulger mine of the Verner Coal company, at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning. He was badly injured but the effect on his heart is thought to have caused his death. He was removed from the debris of slate and rushed home on a handcar on the railroad. His wife, and two children survive, Thomas and Mrs. John DHAYER, at home. Mr. BROMILEY was born in England in 1875 and came to this country when a young man. Pearl Elizabeth WINTERS, daughter of William WINTERS, North street, died Saturday afternoon at the home of her parents, following an illness due to meningitis. Besides the father and mother, a brother and sister survive. The funeral was held Tuesday.

REBOUL, RIDDILE Mrs. Camilette REBOUL, aged 41 years, wife of Felix REBOUL, died at her home in Valley street, McDonald, at 5 o'clock Sunday morning, March 25, 1917 following an illness of tuberculosis. She came to McDonald from France eleven years ago. Besides the husband two sons survive. Interment was made in the Hilldale cemetery Monday afternoon. Dr. W. V. RIDDILE, aged 78 years, one of the best known physicians of Washington county, died at his home at Burgettstown at 11:50 o'clock Sunday morning, March 25, 1917, after a week's illness of pneumonia. Dr. RIDDILE was born in Smith township and was the son of Samuel and Margaret SCOTT RIDDILE. He studied medicine at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1864. For eight years he practiced at Noblestown, Candor, and Pittsburgh. For the last forty-five years he had practiced at Burgettstown. In spite of his age he kept up his work until he was taken ill. He was one of the oldest active physicians in the county and was at one time president of the Washington County Medical Society. He took a keen interest in religious and education affairs of the town. For forty years he had been an elder in the Presbyterian Church, most of that time in the First Presbyterian Church of Burgettstown. He served several terms on the Burgettstown school board. Dr. RIDDILE was twice married. His first wife was Miss Rosa PATTERSON, daughter of Finley PATTERSON of Cross Creek township. His second wife was Miss Emma BINGHAM, daughter of Charles BINGHAM, who survives with one son and one daughter, F. C. RIDDILE of Oakmont and Mrs. E. B. PRY of Ingram. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the First Presbyterian Church at Burgettstown, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. W. M. HAYS, D. D. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery.

She was in her 79th year. She is survived by four sons: Daniel of Reissing, Robert of McDonald, James of Venice and George of Canonsburg. Funeral services were held Wednesday evening at the home of her son, Robert MCCLAIN, 229 Arabella street, McDonald. Interment took place Thursday at Kittanning. Frank BROCKMAN, aged 2 months and 25 days, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. BROCKMAN of Saxonburg, Pa., died on Wednesday, January 17, 1917. The child was in good health on Tuesday but was found dead on Wednesday morning, having died between one and six o'clock that morning. When first discovered it was thought the child had smothered. Dr. W. W. LASHIER of Saxonburg was called and Coroner J. Charles DENGLER was notified. The investigation conducted showed that the child had died from pneumonia contracted during the night. Besides the parents he is survived by two brothers, James and William. Interment was made in the Summit cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. BROCKMAN were formerly of Midway.     3. One of a set of twins died in Gwendolen, (Gladden). The child had been born Thursday. Burial was in the Venice cemetery. The father was the ticket agent at the Gwendolen station of the Wabash railroad. The funeral of Mrs. Sarah Jane LYLE, aged over 80 years, who died Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ora LYLE KEISTER, of Steubenville, was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Cross Creek Presbyterian church. Interment was at Cross Creek. Mrs. LYLE was stricken about ten days ago with paralysis and never rallied. She was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, but upon her marriage to Mr. LYLE, became a resident of Smith township, this county. Since her husband's death she lived with her daughter, Mrs. KEISTER.     3. Found in the Pittsburgh Press dated January 10 1916: JAMES C ADAMS, aged 44, died yesterday in the home of his brother-in-law, JOHN R HAYS, 5700 Elgin ave. He was born in Armstrong county and moved to Pittsburg 27 years ago, going in the coal and builders' supply business. Two years ago, he moved to Detroit, where he had been living until the time of his death. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and of Dallas Lodge 508, F and A M. For several years, he had been secretary of the Builders' Supply club of Pittsburg. His widow; two daughters, Misses Gertrude and Virginia; one son, Russell; four brothers, one sister, his father and his mother survive. Mrs MARY J WATSON, aged 73, died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs WILLIAM J TURNER, 524 Doyle Ave., West Homestead. She was born in Mifflin township and had been a resident of that section all her life. She was active in church work in Homestead and a few years ago donated to the First Methodist Episcopal church of Homestead the site on which the present church now stands. She is survived by a daughter. Mrs ELIZABETH HOGENMILLER, aged 68, is dead at her home, 111 Arlington ave., Mount Oliver.
