On last Wednesday at one o'clock Prof. D.R. Sumstine and Miss Stella McDowell left on the train for Greensburg where they secured a marriage license and then went to the residence of Rev. W.F. Ulery of that city, where they were quietly married. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Ulery according to the Lutheran church after which the happy couple left for Pittsburg returning to the bride's home on Friday evening where a very excellent supper was served to the newly wedded couple and a few of their friends. The Ligonier Cornet band called upon them during the evening and gave them a very appropriate musical serenade and were royally entertained. The small and large boy was also on hand with his noise and rattle. Prof. Sumstine is a graduate of Thiel college, and successfully served as principal of our public schools last year to which position he was reelected but resigned to accept the principalship of the Apollo schools. Prof. Sumstine left Saturday to take charge ! of his new position, Mrs. Sumstine remaining with her parents for a short time. They expect to go housekeeping in Apollo about the holidays. She is Rebecca McDowell who marked her anniversary by reminiscing with many of her friends. Daughter of Ensign, and Rachel (DuShane) Henderson, she was born August 17, 1860, in Fairfield Township. She was married September 5, 1877, to Franklin P. McDowell who died in 1940. Died at his home in Franklin county, Kansas, three miles northeast of Greeley, on Sunday morning, December 21, 1902, Mr. Samuel S. Blair in the 74th year of his age. For a number of years Mr. Blair had been afflicted by rheumatism and other bodily troubles and at the time of his wife's death was really an invalid. Services were held at the home the morning of the 23rd, where many friends and neighbors were congregated to take part in the ceremonies. The remains were interred in the Greeley cemetery, where but a short time before had been laid to rest his beloved and affectionate wife. Four daughters survive him. Mr. Blair was a native of Westmoreland county, Pa., and was of Scotch parents. Early in life, when the gold excitement was at its height he went to California in pursuit of the golden treasure. He went by way of the Isthmus and spent about three years in mining and prospecting. After leaving California he again returned to his native home in Pennsylvania. In the spri! ng of 1858 he came to Kansas, settling near the present homestead and pre-empting a quarter section of land. In '59 he returned to Pennsylvania and married Catherine Luther. In 1860 he returned to Kansas, bringing with him his young wife and settled on the open piece of land first alluded to. Leaving this at an early period he settled upon the place, then open prairie, which became the final homestead of the family. Hello veterans and newbies of the RootsWeb. There are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are more than 32000 prisoners on record from the Union, and quite a few who were held prisoner here as Union regiments from Confederate states. There are also nearly 13000 marked graves of those who died here. I thought I would send my offer as these would lead to a great many descendants who might be looking for them.. I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides as well as all Americans who gave their freedoms for those that we enjoy today.. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I also have the continued update database which is dated October 01 2002 . I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking . Please email me directly at [email protected] If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask.
