A member of the Manor Methodist Church, she was born in Ligonier Twp. December 12, 1886. Mrs. McDowell is survived by her husband, I.G. McDowell, and four children: Robert, Paul, and Mrs. Milton Slater, all of Irwin R.D. 3, and Mrs. Paul Penny, Turtle Creek. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: George, Arthur and Alex Burns, all of Ligonier; Mrs. Leah Nicely, Greensburg; Mrs. Lida Whirlow, Pittsburgh and Mrs. Lizzie Byers, Somerset. Friends were received at the Rodgers Funeral Home, 310 Third St., Irwin, where services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesdsay by Rev. P.W. Baer and Rev. L.C. McDOWELL Irwin Garfield McDowell, one-time teacher in Ligonier, died Saturday in Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 83. Mr. McDowell, who lived in Irwin had retired after teaching for 40 years, most recently in Forbes Road Junior High School. He was a native of Ligonier and the widower of Emma Burns McDowell who died in 1954. He was a member of Manor Methodist Church. Mr. McDowell is survived by two sons (Paul of Greensburg and Robert of Irwin) and two daughters (Mrs. Milton Slater of Irwin and Mrs. Margaret Penny of Monroeville). Rev. Robert L. Critchlow officiated at services in Vincent V. Rodgers Funeral Home, Irwin, and burial in Brush Creek Memorial Cemetery. ___________________________________________

He was born in South Ligonier township on April 11, 1867 and was the son of the late Hiram and Amanda J. McDowell, of Ligonier. The late Mr. McDowell, who left this district when quite a young man had followed railroading but was retired some years ago. His widow and several children of a former marriage survive along with the following brothers and sister: E.K. McDowell, of Ligonier; I.G. McDowell, of Irwin R.D. 3, and Mrs. Virgil Serena, of South Ligonier Twp. One sister, the late Mrs. Annie James, of Moberly, Mo., preceded her brother in death several years ago. Mr. McDowell was born near Ligonier, June 13, 1846. At the age of 18 years, he enlisted in Co. 211, Vol. Infantry regiment of Pennsylvania, and was transferred into the U.S. Service at Camp Reynolds, Sept. 12, 1864. He was mustered out in 1865. In 1870 he went to Scandia, Kansas, where he settled on a farm and resided there until his death. He was married to Mathaldia Gregg, August 28, 1873, at Scandia, Kansas, who preceded him in death, March 26, 1931. Mr. McDowell was a member of Mason Lodge at Scandia, Kansas. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Alice Currie, Mrs. Pearl Bowman and Carl McDowell, of Scandia, Kansas, and William and Fred of Republic, Kansas; also by 20 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Burns of Ligonier and Mrs. Belle Mickey of Pittsburgh; and two brothers, William McDowell of Portland, Oregon and Ed. McDowell, of Latrobe. Funeral services were held at his late home and the Union Valley Church, Thursday morning, July 21, with the Rev. Chas. A. Rheson, the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion in charge. Members of the Scandia American Legion Post and Andy Bettis, the remaining Civil War veteran in Scandia, acted as honorary pallbearers. The Union Valley Church failed to hold all who came to attend the funeral, and many were compelled to stay on the outside. Interment was made in the Union Valley Cemetery. ________________________________________________

CLARA McDOWELL One of the matriarchs of Ligonier passed away Thursday at her home at the age of 95. She was Clara Robbins McDowell, widow of John W. McDowell, Ligonier Borough's last fulltime operating blacksmith who died in 1957. Mrs. McDowell's funeral service was held Monday in D. Paul Wilkinson Funeral Home with Rev. Benton McKee officiating; interment was in Ligonier Valley Cemetery. She was born Sept. 27, 1870, in Adamsburg, daughter of Samuel P. and Sophia Eicher Robbins, and had lived in Ligonier since childhood. She was a member of Ligonier Methodist Church for more than seven decades, was a charter member of its Foreign Missionary Society, the Philathea Sunday School Class, the Women's Society of Christian Service, and for many years was active in the local chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She is survived by a son (Ligonier Borough Councilman Emmett E. McDowell), four daughters (Mrs. Donald H. Robb of Ligonier, Mrs. Samuel L. Kurtz of Harrisburg, Mrs. A.H. Kratske and Mrs. Charles H. Small of Chambersburg), 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. ________________________________________________
