    1. [PA-RAILROADS] Transportation routes in 1850 from Port of New York to Wilmington Delaware
    2. Nancy
    3. What means of transportation might have been taken by an immigrant who arrived at the Port of New York in 1848 and went to northern Delaware? I see there were steamboats that possibly went on the Delaware Raritan Canal, but where did it start, did it end in Trenton? There were also railroads at the time, but I am wondering about the cost involved, more expensive? Just trains? Just steamboats, some kind of coach? What did they do after they got off the boat? 3. Thank you, Becky. Don't want to put you to too much trouble, but will be grateful if you come up with anything. Of course Dayton produced rubber, steel, mechanical parts and other things like that which were important for the war effort, but so did lots of other cities in Pennsylvania and Ohio (Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Akron, Canton). What I've been trying to figure out is whether there might have been something special about Dayton that might tie into the railroad and the decision of the person I'm researching to move there with the PRR. I know of three things that made Dayton unique during the 1940s (there are probably more): 1) National Cash Register Co. did some work on "code machines" for the military - this probably didn't have too much connection to rail transport. 2) Work was done in Dayton (Monsanto?) on Polonium-210, used in trigger mechanisms for atomic bombs (I kind of hope the railroad wasn't hauling lots of that around!). 3) As you mentioned, during the 1940s and early 1950s Wright Field grew into WPAFB, and there probably was a huge involvement with the PRR both in development of the base and in shipping war materiel. The individual I am researching later left the PRR and joined WPAFB in logistics, so that is probably "it." Bryant, who heard the explosion and ran to the spot, found a large hole in tho ground.  A short distance above, he stumbled over the carcasses of two dead horses horribly mangled and cut.   A few foot away, the wagon was found reduced to splinters, while by its' side, lay a piece of a human log, tho solo remnant that could be found of poor Kirk Van Curen's body.  He had been literally blown to atoms.   (I think they meant "a piece of a human leg" not log.)

    1. [PA-RAILROADS] Madeira Mamore Expedition to Brazil, Metropolis Mercedita & Richmond
    2. Bob Moyer
    3. Hello everyone, I have finished indexing the names for a new database for the Madeira Mamore Expedition of 1878 which involved constructing a railroad in Brazil by US engineers, contractors and laborers. The names are mostly PA, NJ, NY, DE & MD. My project started as a search for person named Philip BOWERS in my family tree who I finally found in one of the newspaper articles and my project since expanded into something much more. Since I had collected so much information I thought it might be a good time to share it with other researchers. The project consists of two web pages: 1) a source or reference page (bibliography) with links to where the names were found, and 2) the database of names to which it is linked You can access both at the web site below: http://web.rtmc.net/~bobmoyer/1878/sources.htm I you have a missing person from this time period you need to check the database, especially if they were from PA, NJ, NY, DE or MD. The names in the list are not currently found by searching the Internet or Rootsweb. Rootsweb support said the names will all eventually become indexed - indexing runs in two month cycles. Short Synopsis: The Disastrous American Expedition of 1878 that included the contractors P. & T. Collins (Col. George Earl Church) and the laborers who went to Brazil to build a railroad was also called the "The Railroad of Death" and a "railroad from no-place to no-where". It was estimated that a worker died for every sleeper that was laid in the jungle and the loss of workers was on a scale that rivaled the Panama Canal project. The purpose of this project is to create a database of names by transcribing newspaper accounts, books and other sources about the expedition. Careful attention has been given to separate these names from the later Farquar/Jekyll expedition of 1907-1912. Thousands of men from many countries lost their lives in both expeditions. I've read that many men kept diaries while working in Brazil and I have a few in my sources but I'm sure there are others. If you have anything to add I would welcome your contribution. Happy Hunting - please let me know if you find anything helpful. Sincerely, Bob Moyer Asheboro, NC Researching the Pennsylvania names of Moyer, Rempp, Klug, Mattern, Magargal and BOWERS, the name that originally started this project.

    1. [PA-RAILROADS] PA Workers in Brazil
    2. Bob Moyer
    3. Hello everyone, I have started another project that might help the readers on this list. Although it is only partially finished, I thought I would share what I have done so far. Perhaps some of you have something else to add to my discoveries. Many workers went to Brazil in 1878 on what was known as the Madeira-Mamore Expedition to build a railroad and the majority were from Philadelphia and eastern PA. Hundreds never returned home and died in Brazil. There are many newspaper accounts and several books written about the expedition. I have collected a great number of these documents that have individual names and I decided to transcribe the names as I read through the material. I finally found my ancestor in one of the newspaper articles but there are so many other names I thought it would be an interesting project. I shortened the RootsWeb link so it doesn't get cut-off using a shorter method called "Tinyurl". The Madeira Mamore Expedition of 1878 http://tinyurl.com/dnf4j9 My other map projects are basically finished. You might check again to see if I added anything else since your last looked at them. 3. I am so sorry to hear that the K & K is gone. I assume that others already knew about it. My grandfather was a union engineer on both the BR&P and the Pittsburgh & Western. Wasn't the K&K part of a state park? What happens to that? Best Regards, David Armstrong Elkins, WV
