George PORTER, superintendent of the South Penn Oil Company, Midland division, died Monday, April 23, 1917, at 9 a.m. after a lingering illness, at his home, 151 South Negley avenue, Pittsburgh. He was born in County Armagh, Ireland, September 10, 1844, and came to this country at the age of fifteen. He lived in Beaver County until 1864, when he went to Oil City, where he secured a position in Robson & Co.'s hardware store, becoming a member of the firm a year later. In 1874 he and Robert M. WAUGH, under the firm name of WAUGH & PORTER, operated extensively in the Butler, Bradford, and Richburg oil fields. In 1886 he became identified with the Standard Oil Company in the fuel department. In 1890 he was appointed superintendent of the South Penn Oil Company's oil wells around Oil City. In 1897 he was transferred to the Bradford district and in 1902 to the Pittsburgh district. He was a member of Petrolia Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, of Oil City, and the East Liberty Presbyterian Church. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. William GATES and Mrs. E. A. TAGGART of near Buffalo Village, A. Donaldson MCCARRELL of Hickory, Mrs. Walker DINSMORE of Steubenville, Ohio, and Thomas L. MCCARRELL, who now occupies the old homestead. One brother, the rev. Alexander D. MCCARRELL, survives from a family of nine children. Funeral services were held at the late home Saturday afternoon. Interment was at Hickory.
