Anyone who has read Thomas Bell's "Out of This Furnace" will see a lot of similarities but I think the housing in Painter's Row is worse than that described in Bell's book. It also shows why unions and laws were needed to rein in the Carnegies of the world and protect the average folk from exploitation. Those who haven't read Bell's book might be in for a surprise.
