Anyone who has read Thomas Bell's "Out of This Furnace" will see a lot of similarities but I think the housing in Painter's Row is worse than that described in Bell's book. It also shows why unions and laws were needed to rein in the Carnegies of the world and protect the average folk from exploitation. Those who haven't read Bell's book might be in for a surprise. I can guarantee that, after reading these 6 or 7 pages, you'll thank your Creator that you weren't living through those times. The URL below is for the start of the article on Painter's Row. From looking at maps on the Historic Pitt site, I would place Painter's Row just about where the West End ramp from the Fort Pitt Bridge touches W. Carson St. http://digital.library.pitt.edu/cgi-bin/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=pitttext;cc=pitttext;sid=6630ef5a6fcac5adf476dd9c632f998a;q1=painter%20s%20row;rgn=full%20text;idno=00hc12051m;view=image;seq=0016 Al --=======1948787F======= Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; x-avg=cert; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-2C33315D Content-Disposition: inline --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
