I went to the website for the 1876 Atlas of Pittsburgh (http://digital.library.pitt.edu/maps/76v01ind.html) and found on Plate 10 a map showing what were then new Ward boundaries for the city. You can use that website to enlarge the maps and you will find Ward 35 on the South Side of Pittsburgh on Plate 10. It appears it was called "Union" Ward since each Ward has a name assigned to it - Ward 34 was West Pittsburgh, Ward 33 was Monongahela, and Ward 36 was Temperanceville (interesting name). Loking into Ward 35 on the map I find in faint writing Washington Turnpike - which can be located coming outof the top of the "S" in Southside and running up between the "U" and "N" in Union. It runs parralel to Coal Way. This may be the location you were seeking. If I remember my geography of Pittsburgh (and I know other will help) it appears that we're talking about the vicinity of the current Steuben Street on the West End. The notation down the margin of the page shows it as WASHINGTON PIKE and they were in the 36th ward of Pittsburgh, Alleghany Co. I am guessing that your Bibey family lived in the 35th ward of Pittsburgh and the road was most likely the old turnpike, currently Rt. 40, called by various names, most commonly Cumberland Pike or in Wash. Co. I think was Old Pike Rd. (?). Hope this helps you. Ruth Subject: [PAWASHIN] Washington Pike > My Great Uncle James Henry BIBEY was born November 30 1882 to John > and Lois > (ASTON)BIBEY. 2. Dana & Ruth, I took a look at Plate 10 and got a bit of a surprise. I'm not sure why that's marked Union. Union Twp (you'll find the word "Union" is smaller type below the city border) was comprised of Banksville, Green Tree and Westwood which made it a kind of east to west Twp. I may be mistake but Union Twp was formed in the early 1860s. It had a different name but it was decided that the name was too large for such a small Twp. Union was formed from part of Chartiers which, in itself, was formed from Lower St Clair Twp. The Washington Turnpike is now called Greentree Rd (notice the different spelling of Greentree Rd vs Green Tree Boro). Ruth, you confused me because you referred to both Ward 35 AND 36. Dana, if you look at the map again, look at the Ward number of 36 and you'll see the street named Chesnut. That is Steuben St. Where the letter "C" is, there's a Y in the road. Steuben continues on with Chartiers starting and going west and UP on the map. Chartiers then continues through to Corliss St in Sheraden where it turns left. Eventually it ends near the Windgap Bridge near McKees Rocks. Temperanceville was founded in 1834 and must've really been isolated as it's kind of a stopping point to rest before heading in to Pittsburgh. There is a tavern at the bottom of Greentree Rd where it intersects with Woodville that has a jail cell in the cellar. It was used to house a prisoner on his or her way to the County Jail. With all this confusion, it looks like the Aston family lived at the bottom of Greentree Rd, between McKnight and Woodville. The ward boundaries or borders aren't distinct, maybe not even marked but, taking the two ward numbers and throwing in the Washington Pike, this is just about the only location that it could be and I'd be willing to put money on that. BTW, I don't gamble.
