    3. Hi, A possible hint: R and K can be mistaken for each other. when looking for surname beginning with "S", I have found "F" - being creative is the best way. I have an index card with all the possibilities and just go back and forth when searching. Hope this helps someone.

    3. I agree - sometimes even the simplest names get misspelled. I spent a long time looking for my WRIGHT ancestors on the census of 1870. Then bam - when I was looking for a different name in the same town I stumbled across my family incorrectly spelled RIGHT. It was there all along! My other ancestors with a simple name like Crossland were often recorded as "Crofsland" - a fact that caused me no end of confusion when I was new to researching.
