    2. Phyllis, The 1910 and 1920 index is known as the SOUNDEX. The surname codes up to a letter and 3 numbers and they use that to help you find your ancestor in the actual census pages. So once your surname is coded (see http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/coding.html ) then you would look in the appropriate year soundex microfilm for your head of household. (Only head of households were indexed, along with anyone whose surname was different than the head of household.) The soundex microfilm will then give you the ED and page number that you would use in the census to see the entire household's information. Hope that helps.
