    1. [PITTSBURGH] To be born in Pittsburgh - is to be born with a can of Iron in one hand :)

    3. So true, so true. May I please make one statement here. I too am researching my genealogy in the Pittsburgh area. My ancestors came to Hays/Homestead as early as the mid 1700's, to Allegheny City mid 1800's, from Cumberland County to Pitt Township (early Pittsburgh) in the mid 1700's, and to the mines of Plum/Penn in the early 1900's. They came from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia and Austria-Hungary. They, like others who emmigrated to Pittsburgh, helped to make and shape Pittsburgh and its people. This includes their sense of humour, their desire to help others, their heritage, you name it. This also includes wanting to share memories of the place, the ethnic communities, the ethnic foods, school picnics at Kennywood, you name it. But genealogists should understand that genealogy isn't just cut and dry, names - dates - places. Genealogy is learning about the people, the area, the history...what it is that makes a city/county/state tick. To have a group like this where we can discuss what living in Pittsburgh is and was really like, to me as a genealogist, is a blessing in disguise. Before moving to England, I researched my Welsh heritage with many trips to Wales which included learning about the people, the food, the sense of humour. Then I could understand my Welsh ancestors and heritage. You see, it all ties in...it all is a part of being a Pittsburgher. So discussions such as this, to the professional or amateur genealogist, should be a blesing. It is sad when all that matters is filling in a chart with names and dates. That isn't genealogy...that is just compiling data. Thank you for letting me have this moment to try and explain what is is to be 'born in Pittsburgh'. If anyone out there would be interested in putting a Pittsburgh memories group together, e-mail me and I will get things started.
