Church at 10 a.m. The Pittsburgh Press Thursday, 14 December 1950 RETIRED POLICEMAN CRUSHED TO DEATH BY SKIDDING TRUCK A retired City patrolman was killed when a truck skidded out of control and crushed him against the front of a building at E. Carson St. and Becks Run Rd. , late yesterday. He was Edward D. Barry, 57, of 5500 Penn Ave., who retired from the force in 1944 after 28 years service. Mr. Barry -known as "Red" -had been employed the last three months as special patrolman at the Morrison-Knudson Co., 3719 E. Carson St. He reported for work only moments before the accident. He was standing beside the auto of C.F. Lingenfelser, 64 of 343 Joseph St., Baldwin Twp. when a truck eastbound in Carson St. skidded into the rear end of Mr. Lingenfelser's car. The glancing collision caused the the truck to go out of control its driver said. As Mr. Barry tried to jump clear, the front end of the truck hit him, smashing him into the wall fo the Kiefer Coal and Coke Co. Patrolmen Ray Berringer and Jacob Buckley rushed Mr. Barry to South side Hospital in a police ambulance. He was pronounced dead of a fractured skull. The truck driver has been identified as William V. Price, 23 of 820 Ravine St., Munhall. He has been held for the coroner. Mr. Barry is survived by his widow , Mrs. Viola Scheifer Barry ; one son, Edward Jr., and three brothers, Albert F., John W. and David M., all of Pittsburgh. He was a life resident of Lawrenceville, a member of the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Church and a veteran of World War I. Friends are being recieved at the Henninger Funeral Home, 4635 Butler St. where services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. Requiem high mass will be sung Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in the Soldiers' Plot at Calvary Cemetery.
