Rather Spotted Career of John E. VAUGHN, Soon to be Tried in Montreal for Bigamy--He Did a Number of Friends Here and Elsewhere John E. VAUGHN, who was so badly wanted in 1885 by A. J. MONTGOMERY, of the Red Lion sales stables, and other Pittsburghers on the charges of embezzlement and fraud, turns out to be the gay Mr. MELBOURNE, who, on Saturday, was committed for trial before the court of queen's bench at Montreal on the charge of bigamy. Detective G. B. PERKINS, who pursued VAUGHN until he reached Canada, describes him as a desperate character with a passion for horses and women, that circumstances were never allowed to interfere with. About the time VAUGHN was wanted her for embezzlement Sheriff John H. CARNEY of St. Joseph, Mo., was offering big rewards for his apprehension. He had by some clever ruse defrauded his partners in the livery business out of a large sum of money. One day he dropped a letter, which his partner picked up and read. It was from a man in the employ of a Kentucky horse breeder, who purported to be a friend of VAUGHN, giving him "pointers" on a horse which was about to be sold for $1800, and worth more than double the money. This was in confidence to his friend VAUGHN, advising him to get the horses, as there was big money in him, not known to the owner of the horse. The partner called VAUGHN's attention to it, but was answered by saying, "Oh, that is a private letter; there is a horse I could make money on if I only hand the money, but I have not got it, and so it makes no difference; it is no account to me, and probably no one else is prepared to believe my friend. I never mentioned it, be cause I had not enough money." This very thing was the means of interesting the partners, and they proposed to him to let them in on the deal , and they would furnish the money. They gave him $1800 and expense money. He took it and started to Kentucky after the horse, and is still after it. Subsequent events proved that VAUGHN himself had written this letter, and dropped it on his partners as a decoy. VAUGHN first showed up as a liveryman at West Elizabeth, 20 miles up the Monongahela river. He married Annie DAVIS, the daughter of John DAVIS< of Camden, Rev. SHRIVER, of Lebanon, performing the cemetery. The couple lived happily together for a year, when VAUGHN suddenly disappeared, leaving in the lurch a number of friends from whom he had heavily borrowed. His wife was true to him during his absence, for she eluded the deceives sent from Pittsburgh to ascertain the whereabouts of her husband by watching the mail. Mrs. VAUGHN would always walk to the train with her letters and hand them to the postal clerk, thus keeping them away from the eyes of the detectives. She was at this time supporting herself by running a small grocery store. After being worsted in a silver mine scheme at Ottawa, Canada, VAUGHN turned up at Alexandria, Ontario, as coachman to a rich family, going under the name of MELBOURNE. The first intimation his wife, Annie DAVIS, had of him was in a letter written in Phillipsburg asking her to sell the store and give him the money to take some fancy teams he had to Australia, where everything promised bright, and that as soon as he was settled she could come to Australia, and the would begin life together again. There was something in this letter which aroused the wife's suspicion, and she put a detective on his track. It was soon developed that he not only had no teams to take to Australia, but that, as he could not well rob anyone else, he was now trying to rob his wife. Likely she would have let this go, but when she found he had another wife living with him, that was more than she could stand, and the bigamy suit now on trial is the result.

Two Lost, Two Saves Sad Double Drowning in the Monongahela River Half the occupants of a capsized boat sink--the others make miraculous escape. About 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon a drowning of an extremely sad nature occurred at the foot of South Tenth street by which two boys named Willie WILLIAMS, aged fifteen years, and Eddie ROBERTS, aged fifteen years, were lost. The lads, in company with two others named Tommy MURRAY and Mike GALLAGHER, all of whom are employed as "pull up" boys in OLIVER's Fifteenth street mill, went down to the river to play, the bill being idle. They found a skiff, into which the quartet climbed. The had gotten only a short distance from the shore when the boat capsized, spilling the occupants into the water. WILLIAMS and ROBERTS sank and were not seen again. Young ROBERTS (sic) grasped a rope attached to some barges and was rescued by a man named CLOUD. GALLAGHER went under the barges and floated down the river as far as the Pan Handle Railroad bridge. He managed in some unaccountable way, as he could not swim, to keep his dead above water, and was finally rescued by a man named JAMES, who went out after him in a skiff. WILLIAMS lived with his parents at South Sixteenth and Carson streets, and ROBERTS' parents lived in Rhey's row on South Seventeenth street. At 10 o'clock last night neither of the bodies had been found. *From the research of Ruth Sprowls

Wouldn't doubt it at all. I've seen that surname at any and every cemetery I've spent more than 30 seconds in. The trick is to figure out which ones are yours and which aren't. I know that most, if not all, of the LANGs at St. Michael's are mine.... Hi Tomi, There are a bunch of 19th Century directories up on our website at http://www.evendon.com I see a Joseph Lang in the 1877 book and there are bunches of Lageman's. Gas Explosion Works Havoc The explosion on Monday morning of a huge gas tank in the Northside, Pittsburgh, wrought fearful havoc. The death list is known to be 26, and may reach 30. Nearly 500 persons were treated for injuries. The Equitable Gas Co.'s loss is $1,500,000. The Pittsburgh Clay Pot Co.'s plant nearby, was wrecked, and an entire section of the city was laid in ruins. Thousands of windows in the heart of Pittsburgh were shattered. Men went to work repairing the tank at 8 a.m. Forty-three minutes later as the workers handled their blow torches on the steel framework the shock came. Eyewitnesses said that the tank, with a capacity of 5,000,000 cubic feet, the largest natural gas tank in the world shot into the air like a balloon. A ball of fire traveled higher than the tip of Mt. Washington, across the Ohio river from the scene. Sections of the steel framework went up hundreds of feet to crash through roofs and into the streets. Men heroically went to the rescue as the injured men, women, and children, many with blood streaming from cuts and other injuries, ran screaming through the streets as if mad. Rescuers carried the injured through water waist deep. Tottering walls menaced them. Dangling electric wires sputtered on all sides. Yet those engaged in the rescue work forgot their own danger in their feverish efforts to aid others. One rescuer lost his life as a wall toppled. The Red Cross and the Salvation Army established first-aid stations. Here scores of persons were given first-aid attention. Many doctors braved the peril of the region, to seek out and help victims. A former McDonald resident, Mack BEAVER, is one of the dead.
